Data and Reasoning Fabric (DRF)

A Data & Reasoning Fabric (DRF) is envisioned to enable the full potential of air mobility by providing all data and reasoning where they are needed. The DRF provides a marketplace based on an open foundational ecosystem of data and reasoning exchange between the many systems that must seamlessly interplay to manage the complex and dense airspace operations required to achieve advanced air mobility goals. The DRF marketplace is decentralized and will not be owned by any single party. To deliver reference designs and development environments that catalyze broad private and public sector buy-in and self-sustaining development of DRF and associated standards, DRF activities will collaboratively test these technologies, open standards and architectures, and an integrated framework with end-users. Presentation has a run time of 16:58 and is an mp4 attachment included in documents.

Data and Reasoning Fabric (DRF) Phase I & Phase II Report

A Data & Reasoning Fabric (DRF) is envisioned to enable the full potential of advanced air mobility by providing all data and reasoning where they are needed. The DRF marketplace is based on an open foundational ecosystem of data and reasoning exchange between the many systems that must seamlessly interplay to manage the envisioned highly complex and dense airspace operations. DRF activities will identify, test and - as needed - research and develop critical core technologies, and collaboratively test these technologies, open standards and architectures, and the integrated framework with end-users so as to deliver reference designs and development environments that catalyze broad private and public sector buy-in and self-sustaining development of it and associated standards.

CAP – NASA DRF Wildfire Mitigation Partnership

The California Wing of CAP and the DRF Team came together during Fall of 2020. NASA DRF Team gathered an understanding of CAP’s operational process flow for their wildfire reconnaissance missions and, in collaboration with CAP, has been able to identify a preliminary set of technology areas that can be enabled/enhanced by DRF to potentially bring forth improved accuracy and reduced latency in the data used by CAP in mission critical decision making. This content is expected to be hosted on the NARA NASA public websites: https://nari.arc.nasa.gov/tfrsac-wildfire

GADRAS-DRF Enhancements for Safeguards – Custom Peak Fitting to Enhance Model Fitting and Isotopics

One major software update was accomplished within the Gamma Detector Response and Analysis Software-Detector Response Function (GADRAS-DRF) package. This update allows users to adjust individual peak fits for use in subsequent analysis processes within GADRAS-DRF. A graphical user interface (GUI) was implemented so users can see the effect of their fit adjustments on the spectrum. This new feature will enhance the capability of the previously funded auto-enrichment and peak-based 1D model fit feature that was implemented in FY23 (Fiscal Year). Isotopic analysis was performed using M400 data obtained from uranium standards and the isotopic assessment is given with and without manual peak adjustments.

GADRAS-DRF Validation for Safeguards and Custom Peak Fit Enhancements

In previous years, SGTech funded enhancements to the isotopics routine in the software called Gamma Detector Response and Analysis Software-Detector Response Function (GADRAS-DRF), including the addition of peak fit customization capabilities. A project was also funded that focused on implementing a peak-based model fitting routine, allowing model fitting to be performed without dependence on export-controlled cross-sections. In FY25 significant improvements were made to the custom peak fitting interface, accompanied by several validation studies within GADRAS-DRF. These studies encompassed IsotopeID performance, distributed source analysis, isotopics validation, and activity estimation. Additionally, the peak-only model fitting option was validated using an HPGe measurement of a rotating drum with line sources.

GADRAS-DRF for Safeguards (FY 2025 Mid-Year/Annual Report)

Task 1 – Extract GADRAS-DRF capabilities for a workflow intuitive to safeguards analysis. This task is almost complete. Significant improvements have been made to the functionality of customizing peak fits for use in the isotopics application, as well as peak-based FSA model analysis. The remaining tasks revolve around bug fixes, testing the application, and adding a density scroll bar to isotopics for real time analysis updates. The density scroll bar values will be reflected in summary tables and the self-shielding form accessed within isotopics.

An Approach to Reasoning Service Migration in Data and Reasoning Fabric (DRF) Implementation

In this paper we consider service placement problem for Data and Reasoning Fabric (DRF) enabled airspace operations assuming a fixed cloud/edge infrastructure with allocated computing, storage and power resources, where cloud/edge servers, and communication stations are in a wired connected network, while vehicles use a wireless network for communication. The objective is to automatically select the best location for the requested service execution, which achieves minimum cost while satisfying the user quality of service (QoS) and available resources constraints. To this end, we estimate for each potential location the response time, consumed energy and total cost; formulate an optimization problem for cost minimization given the users QoS constraints and network infrastructure limitations; and solve it using nonlinear programming tools. The approach is applied to trajectory re-planning use case to handle a no-fly zone contingency in real time.

An Approach to Reasoning Service Migration in Data and Reasoning Fabric (DRF) Implementation

In this paper we consider service migration problem for Data and Reasoning Fabric (DRF) enabled airspace operations assuming a fixed cloud/edge infrastructure with allocated computing, storage and power resources, where cloud/edge servers, and communication stations are in a wired connected network, while vehicles use a wireless network for communication. The objective is to automatically select the best location for the requested service execution, which achieves minimum cost while satisfying the user quality of service (QoS) and available resources constraints. To this end, estimates of the response time, consumed energy and total cost are defined for each potential compute location. A mixed-integer linear program is then formulated and solved to identify optimal compute locations given QoS constraints, network infrastructure limitations, with worst-case vehicle positioning. The approach is applied to trajectory re-planning use case to avoid a collision with an emergency vehicle in real time.
