Inverse scattering for an exterior Dirichlet problem

Scattering caused by a metallic cylinder in the field of a wire carrying a periodic current is studied, with a view to determining the location and shape of the cylinder in light of far field measurements between the cylinder and the wire. The associated direct problem is the exterior Dirichlet problem for the Helmholtz equation in two dimensions, and an improved low frequency estimate for its solution by integral equation methods is shown by inverse scattering calculations to be accurate to this estimate. The far field measurements are related to low frequency boundary integral equations whose solutions may be expressed in terms of a mapping function for the exterior of the unknown curve onto the exterior of a unit disk. The conformal transformation's Laurent expansion coefficients can be related to those of the far field, the first of which leads to the calculation of the distance between the source and the cylinder, while the other coefficients are determined by placing the source in a different location.

The Dirichlet problem for the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation for an open boundary

Development of a complete theory of the two-dimensional Dirichlet problem for an open boundary. It is shown that the solution of the Dirichlet problem for an open boundary requires the solution of a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind. Although a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind usually has no solution if the kernel is continuous, owing to the logarithmic singularity of the kernel, the equation in this case is converted to a singular integral equation with a Cauchy kernel. It is proven that the homogeneous adjoint equation of the singular integral equation has no nonzero solution. By virtue of this result, and with the aid of an existence theorem known in the theory of singular integral equations, the existence of solutions of the singular integral equation, and then of the unique solution of the Fredholm integral equation of the first kind is proved.

Smoothness of Generalized Solutions of the Dirichlet Problem for Strongly Elliptic Functional Differential Equations with Orthotropic Contractions

In the disk, we consider the first boundary-value problem for a functional differential equation containing transformations of orthotropic contractions of independent variables of the unknown function. We study the smoothness of generalized solutions inside special-type subdomains and near their boundaries and pose strong ellipticity conditions.

Effective Boundary Treatment for the Biharmonic Dirichlet Problem

The biharmonic equation can be rewritten as a system of two Poisson equations. Multigrid solution of this system is expected to converge with the same amount of work as solving two Poisson equations, requiring less than 70 floating point operations (scalar multiply or addition) per fine grid point to reach a solution using an FMG algorithm. For periodic boundary conditions, this goal is attained by simple, straightforward application of multigrid. For Dirichlet boundary conditions, however, convergence is impeded by poor interaction with the boundaries. Attempts to overcome the slowness without specifically addressing the boundaries have resulted in multigrid algorithms not attaining the Poisson convergence rate. We present three methods of boundary treatment with which full multigrid efficiency can be obtained. All implement an approach described by Brandt, concentrating some additional effort near the boundary. The first approach simply adds a number of relaxation sweeps over points close to the boundary. The second uses joint relaxation on near-boundary points. The third method takes something from each of the first two methods, resulting in a solver more suitable for highly parallel applications.

Reduction of the Dirichlet problem to an initial value problem.

Although the derivation is concerned with solutions for plane regions with prescribed boundary values, the approach presented could by easily generalized to higher dimensions. The initial-value method is derived by a combination of invariant imbedding techniques and the Fredholm integral equation method of representation of the potential as a function of a dilayer distribution on the boundary of the region in question.

Spectral multigrid methods for elliptic equations 2

A detailed description of spectral multigrid methods is provided. This includes the interpolation and coarse-grid operators for both periodic and Dirichlet problems. The spectral methods for periodic problems use Fourier series and those for Dirichlet problems are based upon Chebyshev polynomials. An improved preconditioning for Dirichlet problems is given. Numerical examples and practical advice are included.

Mixed Dirichlet–Steklov Problem for the Biharmonic Equation in Weighted Spaces

We address the uniqueness of weak solutions of the mixed Dirichlet–Steklov problem for the biharmonic equation in the exterior of a compact set in the class of functions having a finite Dirichlet integral with the weight |x|{sup a}. Depending on the parameter a, we establish some uniqueness theorems and obtain precise formulas for the dimension of the space of solutions.

Preconditioners for the spectral multigrid method

The systems of algebraic equations which arise from spectral discretizations of elliptic equations are full and direct solutions of them are rarely feasible. Iterative methods are an attractive alternative because Fourier transform techniques enable the discrete matrix-vector products to be computed with nearly the same efficiency as is possible for corresponding but sparse finite difference discretizations. For realistic Dirichlet problems preconditioning is essential for acceptable convergence rates. A brief description of Chebyshev spectral approximations and spectral multigrid methods for elliptic problems is given. A survey of preconditioners for Dirichlet problems based on second-order finite difference methods is made. New preconditioning techniques based on higher order finite differences and on the spectral matrix itself are presented. The preconditioners are analyzed in terms of their spectra and numerical examples are presented.

Improved integrability and boundedness of solutions to some high-order variational problems

We give a series of results on the improved integrability and boundedness of solutions to several high-order variational problems with strengthened coercivity. In particular, we consider the homogeneous Dirichlet problem on the minimum of integral functionals and study variational inequalities with unilateral and bilateral obstacles and with integral and gradient constraints.

Improving the convergence rate to steady state of parabolic ADI methods

The present, residuals' L(2)-norms analysis of the rate of convergence to steady state for parabolic ADI solvers allows the prediction of the number of iterations required for convergence, as a function of the Courant number alpha. A modification of current ADI codes is presented which significantly improves the convergence rate and is insensitive to the Courant number over a large range of alpha. This corrected algorithm is tested for the cases of Dirichlet problems for uniform grids of many mesh sizes, mixed Dirichlet-Neumann problems, and problems defined on stretched grids and/or problems with variable coefficients.
