Calculated electric dipole moment of NiH X2Delta

A calculated dipole moment of 2.39 D at R sub e = 2.79 a sub 0 is reported, obtained from complete active space SCF/configuration interaction calculations plus one natural orbital iteration. The calculation is in good agreement with the experimental value of 2.4 + or - 0.1 D measured for the lowest vibrational level. In agreement with Gray et al. (1985), it is found that the dipole moment is strongly correlated with the 3d electron population; the good agreement with experiment thus provides verification of the mixed state model of NiH. It is concluded that the electric dipole moment of NiH is a sensitive test of the quality of the NiH wave function.

Giant Dipole Moments: Remarkable Effects Mono‐, Di‐, and Tri‐ Hydrated 5,6‐Diaminobenzene‐1,2,3,4‐Tetracarbonnitrile

The molecule 5,6-diaminobenzene-1,2,3,4-tetracarbonnitrile (MOI) was first synthesized by Müllen and coworkers in 2016 and boasts an ultrastrong dipole moment of $14.1\pm 0.7$ Debye in THF. Gas phase DFT computations do not fully reflect this ultrastrong dipole moment, demonstrating the role of solvent in increasing this dipole moment. Here, we investigate the effect of solvent molecule position on the dipole moment of this species, computationally examining systems with giant dipole moments. These systems are optimized in the gas phase with the B3LYP functional, employing the aug-cc-pVTZ and def2-TZVP basis sets, as well as the B3LYP-D3BJ/aug-cc-pVTZ functional in Orca. Single point DLPNO-CCSD/aug-cc-pVDZ results were obtained from Orca and Psi4, as well as DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS information from Psi4. Additionally, these are compared to the dipole moments of di- and tri-hydrated systems, and the SMD models for THF and water at the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. The dissociation energies, HOMO-LUMO energy gaps, and dipole moments are presented. These metrics show the nh1nh1′ THF system boasts the largest dissociation energy and dipole moment of the singly solvated systems, due to its strong hydrogen bonding. The importance of solvent placement is highlighted and may guide the synthesis of macromolecules or organic frameworks incorporating the MOI or MOI-like subunits. Remarkably, a single solvent molecule provides a good model for the difference between the gas phase and solvated species. The predicted gas phase dipole moments computed with B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ for the MOI, its monohydrated complex, dihydrated complex, and its trihydrated complex are 9.6, 14.2, 16.0, and 16.8 Debye, respectively.

Theoretical study of the dipole moment function of OH(X 2Pi)

A complete theoretical electric dipole moment function mu(r) is computed for OH(X 2Pi) at the full configuration-interaction (FCI) level for DZP + diffuse Gaussian basis set. The energy and dipole moment are also determined with 2d functions on oxygen at seven r values. The following methods are compared to the FCI for both the oxygen 1d and 2d basis sets: single-reference singles-plus-doubles configuration interaction (SDCI), SDCI with Davidson's correction, the coupled pair functional approach (CPF) and a modified form of CPF, CASSCF, and CASSCF-MRSDCI, and the external contracted CI(CCI) method. The dipole moments are evaluated both as an expectation value and by finite-field methods. The results support the superiority of evaluating the dipole moment as an energy derivative rather than as an expectation value.

Lattice QCD and the Neutron Electric Dipole Moment

The recent lattice QCD calculations of the neutron and proton electric dipole moments and the CP-violating πNN coupling constant due to the θ term are reviewed. Progress toward nucleon electric dipole moment calculations, including the Weinberg three-gluon operator, the quark chromoelectric dipole moment operator, and their renormalization, is also discussed.

Theoretical Study of the Electric Dipole Moment Function of the CIO Molecule

The potential energy function and electric dipole moment function (EDMF) are computed for CIO Chi(sup 2)Pi using several different techniques to include electron correlation. The EDMF is used to compute Einstein coefficients, vibrational lifetimes, and dipole moments in higher vibrational levels. Remaining questions concerning the position of the maximum of the EDMF may be resolved through experimental measurement of dipole moments of higher vibrational levels. The band strength of the 1-0 fundamental transition is computed to be 12 +/- 2 /sq cm atm in good agreement with three experimental values, but larger than a recent value of 5 /sq cm atm determined from infrared heterodyne spectroscopy. The theoretical methods used include SCF, CASSCF, multireference singles plus doubles configuration interaction (MRCI) and contracted CI, coupled pair functional (CPF), and a modified version of the CPF method. The results obtained using the different methods are critically compared.

Theoretical electric dipole moments of SiH, GeH and SnH

Accurate theoretical dipole moments have been computed for the X2Pi ground states of Si(-)H(+) (0.118 D), Ge(+)H(-) (0.085 D), and Sn(+)H(-) (0.357 D). The trend down the periodic table is regular and follows that expected from the electronegativities of the group IV atoms. The dipole moment of 1.24 + or - 0.1 D for GeH recently derived by Brown, Evenson and Sears (1985) from the relative intensities of electric and magnetic dipole transitions in the 10-micron spectrum of the X2Pi state is seriously questioned.

Theoretical Electric Dipole Moments of SiH, GeH and SnH

Accurate theoretical dipole moments (mu(sub c) have been computed for the X(exp 2)Pi ground states of Si(-)H(+)(0.118 D), Ge(+)H(-)(0.085 D) and Sn(+)H(-)(0.357 D). The trend down the periodic table is regular and follows that expected from the electronegativities of the group IV atoms. The dipole moment of 1.24 +/- 0.1 D for GeH recently derived by Brown, Evenson and Sears from the relative intensities of electric and magnetic dipole transitions in the 10 microns spectrum of the X(exp 2)Pi state is seriously questioned.

Lunar magnetic field - Permanent and induced dipole moments

Apollo 15 subsatellite magnetic field observations have been used to measure both the permanent and the induced lunar dipole moments. Although only an upper limit of 1.3 x 10 to the 18th gauss-cubic centimeters has been determined for the permanent dipole moment in the orbital plane, there is a significant induced dipole moment which opposes the applied field, indicating the existence of a weak lunar ionosphere.

Theoretical Electric Dipole Moments and Dissociation Energies for the Ground States of GaH-BrH

Reliable experimental diople moments are available for the ground states of SeH and BrH whereas no values have been reported for GaH and AsH a recently reported experimental dipole moment for GeH of 1.24 + or -0.01 D has been seriously questioned, and a much lower value of, 0.1 + or - 0.05 D, suggested. In this work, we report accurate theoretical dipole moments, dipole derivatives, dissociation energies, and spectroscopic constants (tau(sub e), omega(sub e)) for the ground states of GaH through BrH.

Theoretical Dipole Moment for the X211 State of NO

The dipole moment function for the X(sup 2)II state of NO is studied as a function of the completeness in both the one- and n-particle spaces. Einstein coefficients are presented that are significantly more accurate than previous tabulations for the higher vibrational levels. The theoretical values give considerable insight into the limitations of recently published ratios of Einstein coefficients measured by spectrally resolved infrared chemiluminescence.

Theoretical study of the dipole moment function of OH(X2Pi)

A theoretical study of the sensitivity of the dipole moment function (DMF) of the X2Pi ground state of OH to basis-set saturation and to refinements in the correlation treatment is presented. Emphasis is placed on determining the slope of the DMF at r(e) and the r value at which the maximum occurs. Consideration is given to the effect of oxygen polarization functions up through h type, expansion of the active orbital space to include the O 3d-delta orbital, the effect of higher excitations using the averaged coupled-pair functional method, and the effect of evaluating the dipole moment as an energy derivative rather than as an expectation value. The theoretical DMFs obtained here, which should be the most accurate to date, differ markedly from an empirical DMF of Turnbull and Lowe that is based on experimentally derived intensity ratios. The theoretical DMFs agree better with a recently published DMF of Nelson et al., but suggest that this empirical DMF is also inaccurate for r greater than 2.3 a0.

Theoretical dipole moments for the first-row transition metal hydrides

Spectroscopic parameters (D sub e, r sub e, mu) are determined for the first-row transition metal hydrides using better than DZP basis sets at the modified coupled pair functional (MCPF) level. Extensive comparisons between MCPF and complete-active space self-consistent field (CASSCF)/MRCI calculations with natural orbital iterations, and studies with more extensive basis sets, show this level of treatment to supply an accurate and cost-effective treatment of these systems. For the transition metal hydrides, the bonding can arise from either the 3d(n)4s(2) or 3d(n + 1)4s(1) atomic asymptotes, or a mixture of both. Since the dipole moment arising from these two bonding mechanisms is very different, the dipole moment is found to be directly related to the 3d population. Thus, the magnitude of the dipole moments provides a sensitive test of the wave function, and gives insight into the nature of the bonding.

SCF and CI calculations of the dipole moment function of ozone

The constant and linear terms in a Taylor series expansion of the dipole moment function of the ground state of ozone are calculated with Cartesian Gaussian basis sets ranging in quality from minimal to double zeta plus polarization. Results are presented at both the self-consistent field and configuration-interaction levels. Although the algebraic signs of the linear dipole moment derivatives are all established to be positive, the absolute magnitudes of these quantities, as well as the infrared intensities calculated from them, vary considerably with the level of theory.

The permanent electric dipole moment of chromium monoxide

The permanent electric dipole moments for the X 5Pi and B 5pi states of gas-phase CrO have been experimentally determined using the sub-Doppler optical technique of intermodulated fluorescence spectroscopy in conjunction with the Stark effect. The measured values are 3.88 + or - 0.13 and 4.1 + or - 1.8 D for the X and B states, respectively. The theoretical values determined for the X state using multireference CI iterative-natural-orbital and finite-field calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental value.

New bound on neutrino dipole moments from globular-cluster stars

Neutrino dipole moments mu(nu) would increase the core mass of red giants at the helium flash by delta(Mc) = 0.015 solar mass x mu(nu)/10 to the -12th muB (where muB is the Bohr magneton) because of enhanced neutrino losses. Existing measurements of the bolometric magnitudes of the brightest red giants in 26 globular clusters, number counts of horizontal-branch stars and red giants in 15 globular clusters, and statistical parallax determinations of field RR Lyr luminosities yield delta(Mc) = 0.009 + or - 0.012 solar mass, so that conservatively mu(nu) is less than 3 x 10 to the -12th muB.
