TTDFT: A GPU accelerated Tucker tensor DFT code for large-scale Kohn-Sham DFT calculations

We present the Tucker tensor DFT (TTDFT) code which uses a tensor-structured algorithm with graphic processing unit (GPU) acceleration for conducting ground-state DFT calculations on large-scale systems. The Tucker tensor DFT algorithm uses a localized Tucker tensor basis computed from an additive separable approximation to the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian. The discrete Kohn-Sham problem is solved using Chebyshev filtered subspace iteration method that relies on matrix-matrix multiplications of a sparse symmetric Hamiltonian matrix and a dense wavefunction matrix, expressed in the localized Tucker tensor basis. These matrix-matrix multiplication operations, which constitute the most computationally intensive step of the solution procedure, are GPU accelerated providing ~8-fold GPU-CPU speedup for these operations on the largest systems studied. In conclusion, the computational performance of the TTDFT code is presented using benchmark studies on aluminum nano-particles and silicon quantum dots with system sizes ranging up to ~7,000 atoms.

Locating anionic hydrogen in Ba 3 (Yb,Lu) 2 O 5 H 2 : A combined approach of X-ray diffraction, crystal chemistry, and DFT calculations

By a combination of x-ray diffraction, structural chemistry, and DFT calculations, the presence and location of anionic hydrogen in the two new, layered lanthanide oxyhydrides, Ba 3 Ln 2 O 5 H 2 (Ln = Yb, Lu) is inferred. Single crystals of the compounds have been synthesized from a molten barium flux with the addition of small amounts of BaH 2 . These phases crystallize in space group I4/mmm (#139, Z = 2) with lattice parameters a = 4.3336(2) Å and c = 22.7197(6) Å, and a = 4.3291(1) Å and c = 22.597(1) Å, respectively. The Ba 3 Ln 2 O 5 H 2 phases comprise two different structural moieties: a perovskite double layer of stoichiometry Ba 2 Ln 2 O 5 H – formed by corner-connected LnO 5 tetragonal bi-pyramids with a terminating hydrogen anion, and a puckered rocksalt-type (BaH) + layer that is stretched along the c-axis. DFT calculations were used to arrive at hydrogen positions that minimize energy and are consistent with structural chemistry principles. Furthermore, the calculations show that the valence band edge is dominated by oxygen 2p orbitals with hydrogen 1s states admixed. The conduction band is formed by barium 5d-orbitals and Lu (Yb) 5d-orbitals. These are characteristics of materials with anionic H – . These new phases are isostructural with the Ba 3 Ln 2 O 5 Cl 2 (Ln = Gd–Lu) family of compounds with the chlorine atom in the same apical position as the hydrogen atom. Finally, steric effects limit the size of the lanthanide ion for Ba 3 Ln 2 O 5 H 2 .

Mechanistic Study of 1,2-Dichloroethane Hydrodechlorination on Cu-Rich Pt–Cu Alloys: Combining Reaction Kinetics Experiments with DFT Calculations and Microkinetic Modeling

Cu-rich Pt–Cu bimetallic catalysts are among the most promising candidates for actively catalyzing the hydrodechlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) toward ethylene production. Combining reaction kinetics experiments with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and mean-field microkinetic modeling, we present a systematic mechanistic study for 1,2-DCA hydrodechlorination on Cu-rich Pt–Cu alloy catalysts. Our DFT (PBE+(TS+SCS)) results suggest that increasing Cu content in the Pt–Cu alloy destabilizes C 2 -species adsorption while stabilizing the binding of atomic chlorine. The reaction energetics of all the elementary steps in the 1,2-DCA reaction network were calculated on a Pt 1 Cu 3 (111) model surface. The DFT results were then used to construct a microkinetic model, and the model-predicted reaction rates were compared with our reaction kinetics experimental results on a Cu-rich SiO 2 -supported Pt–Cu alloy catalyst through a parameter estimation procedure. Both the reaction kinetics experiments and the microkinetic model after parameter adjustments yielded 100% selectivity to ethylene. The microkinetic model pointed to a reaction pathway involving two sequential chlorine-removal steps on the Pt–Cu alloy catalyst, a mechanism distinct from the one previously identified on pure Pt/SiO 2 catalysts, which involved an initial hydrogen-removal step. Adjustments to the DFT-derived parameters indicate the possible formation of chlorine-induced Cu-enriched surface sites during 1,2-DCA hydrodechlorination conditions, sites that are more active than those encountered in the bulk Pt 1 Cu 3 (111) alloy surface. Furthermore, our study offers valuable initial insights on the 1,2-DCA hydrodechlorination reaction mechanism and the nature of the active sites on PtCu bimetallic catalysts.

pyRMG: A framework for high-throughput, large-cell DFT calculations on supercomputers

Exascale computing delivers the raw power to simulate ever larger and more chemically realistic systems, but realizing this potential requires codes that can efficiently use thousands of processors. Our real-space multigrid (RMG) density functional theory (DFT) code’s grid-decomposition approach scales nearly linearly with the number of graphics processing units (GPUs), even for simulations exceeding thousands of atoms. This scalability makes RMG a compelling tool for high-throughput DFT studies of materials that would otherwise be bottlenecked in other codes (for example, by global fast Fourier transforms in plane-wave DFT). However, the limited workflow infrastructure for RMG has thus far constrained its adoption to a small user community. In this work, we present pyRMG, a Python package designed to streamline the setup and execution of RMG DFT calculations. Built on the pymatgen and ASE (Atomic Simulation Environment) computational materials science Python packages, pyRMG automates input generation and convergence checking, and it integrates with modern job schedulers (e.g., Flux) on leadership-class platforms such as Frontier and Perlmutter. Here, we demonstrate pyRMG for a high-throughput study of strain effects in 2D 2L-Bi 2 Se 3 /2L-NbSe 2 heterostructures, which offers chemical insights into this system and shows that RMG-based workflows can converge with limited user intervention.

Investigation of the High-Pressure Behaviors of Amblygonite by Single-Crystal X-ray Diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy, and DFT Calculations

In the present study, we extensively explored the high-pressure behaviors and vibrational properties of amblygonite LiAlPO 4 F with elevated pressures up to 34.3 GPa based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements, Raman spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The compressibility and elastic properties of amblygonite were determined first. Specifically, the obtained isothermal bulk modulus of LiAlPO 4 F is 128(4) GPa and the triclinic phase exhibited anisotropic compression with axial compressibility β c > β a > β b with a ratio of 1.11:1.00:1.20. The Raman spectra showed no indication of phase transformation and were used to obtained mode Grüneisen parameters. The average Grüneisen parameter for PO 4 tetrahedral sites was smaller than for the LiO 4 F sites. Our results provide new insights into the phase stability and elastic properties of lithium-fluorite granites at extreme conditions.

DFT calculations and theory do not support enantiospecificity in NMR J-coupling constants

Distinguishing the enantiomers of small organic molecules is an industrially relevant problem with important implications for the health of the population. In a recent publication, Bouchard and co-workers have suggested that large differences in indirect spin-spin (J) coupling constants between enantiomers are possible. A close inspection of their work revealed significant flaws in their density functional theory (DFT) calculations and that the reported effects disappear with appropriate care. We thus conclude that enantiospecificity in spin-spin coupling constants has not be demonstrated either experimentally or theoretically.

Thermodynamic properties of the Nd-Bi system via emf measurements, $\mathrm{DFT}$ calculations, machine learning, and $\mathrm{CALPHAD}$ modeling

Thermodynamic properties of the Nd-Bi system were investigated using a combination of experimental measurements, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), data mining and machine learning (DM + ML) predictions, and calculation of phase diagrams (CALPHAD) modeling. The electromotive force (emf) of Nd-Bi alloys in molten LiCl-KCl-NdCl 3 at 773–973 K was measured via coulometric titration of Nd into Bi for the determination of thermochemical properties such as activity coefficients and solubilities of Nd in Bi. A new peritectic reaction of [liquid + NdBi 2 = Nd 3 Bi 7 ] at 774 K was confirmed using differential scanning calorimetry, structural (X-ray diffraction), and microstructural (scanning electron microscopy) analyses. The unknown crystal structure of NdBi2 was suggested to be a mixture of the anti-La 2 Sb configuration and the La 2 Te-type configuration based on ML predictions for over 26,000 data-mined AB 2 -type configurations together with DFT-based verifications. Using the newly acquired experimental data and DFT-based calculations, the thermodynamic description of the Nd-Bi system was remodeled, and a more complete Nd-Bi phase diagram was calculated, including the Nd 3 Bi 7 compound, invariant transition reactions, and liquidus temperatures.

Exploring the Coexistence of Spin States in [Fe(tpy-Ph) 2 ] 2+ Complexes on Au(111) Using DFT Calculations

In this work, we systematically study the electronic structure and stability of spin states of the [Fe-(tpy-ph) 2 ] 2+ molecule in both the gas phase and on a Au(111) substrate using density functional theory + U (DFT+ U ) calculations. We find that the stability of the Fe 2+ ion’s spin states predicted by the computations is significantly influenced by the Hubbard U parameter. In the gas phase, the low-spin (LS, S = 0) state is found to be energetically favorable for U (Fe) ≤ 3 eV, whereas the high-spin (HS, S = 2) state is stabilized for U (Fe) > 3 eV. Interaction with the Au(111) substrate is found to elevate the critical U for the spin-state transition to 3.5 eV. Additionally, we perform L-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) calculations for both HS and LS states. The calculated XAS suggests that the HS state more closely aligns with the experimental observations, indicating the potential coexistence of the HS state as the initial state during the X-ray excitation process. These findings enrich our understanding of spin-state dynamics in [Fe(tpy-Ph) 2 ] 2+ .

In-situ synthesized N-doped ZnO for enhanced CO 2 sensing: Experiments and DFT calculations

Chemiresistive CO 2 sensing is attractive due to low cost and ease of chip-level integration. Our previous studies (Yong Xia, 2021) showed the well-developed ZnO material fabricated by in-situ annealing exhibited good CO 2 sensing performance. Here, we have expanded on those studies, including CO 2 cyclic tests under both dry air and N 2 background whereby a much higher response to CO 2 in N 2 background was observed. In this study, detailed density functional theory calculations were conducted to understand the behavior. The results indicated nitrogen doping is mainly responsible for the observed response. In the presence of pre-adsorbed O 2 , N-doped ZnO can no longer interact with CO 2 , which agrees well with the observation of higher response in N 2 background. Furthermore, density of states analysis showed N sp 2 hybridized orbital and N 2p orbital of the N dopant mixed with sp 2 hybridized orbital of C atom and 2p orbitals of C/O atoms in CO 2 to form σ and π bonds, respectively. However, they mixed with O 2s/2p orbitals of O atom in O 2 when pre-adsorbed O 2 was present, hindering CO 2 interaction with N-doped ZnO, and resulting in limited response in air. The illustrated mechanism does not only further the understanding of metal oxide-based CO 2 sensing, but also guide the design of new functional materials for CO 2 sensing or capture.

DFT Calculation of Thermal Expansion within Debye-Grüneisen Framework Made Simple and Accurate

The density functional theory (DFT) based Debye-Grüneisen approach is a computational method used to calculate the thermodynamic properties of materials by relating the volume dependence of the Debye frequency to the Grüneisen parameter. In this study, we propose a new model to describe the volume dependence of the Grüneisen parameter. This model offers a simple yet accurate approach to predict the thermal expansion of materials within the framework of the Debye-Grüneisen theory. Specifically, for pure elements or species used as a reference system, we calibrated the parameters to reproduce the experimental coefficient of thermal expansion, heat capacity, and entropy. For compounds with arbitrary compositions, the parameters are determined by taking the arithmetic or geometric average of those obtained from the pure elements or species based on their composition. We then compared the model prediction with experiments. This allowed for a comprehensive characterization of the thermal expansion behavior of various materials.

Improving Predictions of Spin-Crossover Complex Properties through DFT Calculations with a Local Hybrid Functional

We conducted a study on the performance of the local hybrid exchange-correlation functional PBE0r for a set of 95 experimentally-characterized iron spin crossover (SCO) complexes. The PBE0r functional is a variant of PBE0 where the exchange correction is restricted to on-site terms formulated within the basis of local orbitals. We determine the free parameters of the PBE0r functional against experimental data and other hybrid functionals. With a Hartree-Fock (HF) exchange factor of 4%, the PBE0r functional accurately reproduces the electronic and free energy trends predicted in prior DFT studies for these 95 complexes using the B3LYP functional. Larger values of HF exchange stabilize high-spin states. The PBE0r-predicted bond lengths tend to exceed the experimental bond lengths, and bond lengths are less sensitive to HF exchange. The predicted SCO transition temperatures T 1/2 from PBE0r correlate moderately with the experimental transition temperatures, showing a slight improvement compared to the previous modB3LYP-predicted T 1/2 . Furthermore, this study suggests the PBE0r functional as computationally cost-effective and offers the possibility of simulating larger complexes with accuracy comparable to other global hybrid functionals, provided the HF exchange parameter is carefully optimized.
