DFT + DMFT study of dopant effects in the heavy-fermion compound CeCoIn 5

Here we study the dopant-induced inhomogeneity effect on the electronic properties of heavy fermion CeCoIn 5 using a combined approach of density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The inhomogeneity of the hybridization between Ce-4f and conduction electrons is introduced to impose the inequivalent Ce atoms with respect to the dopant. From the DFT to the DFT + DMFT results, we demonstrate a variation of the hybridization strength depending on the hole or electron doping. A drastic asymmetric mass renormalization could be reproduced in the DFT + DMFT calculation. Finally, the calculated Kondo temperature reflects the different development of the heavy quasiparticle states, depending on the dopant.

Delocalized polaron and Burstein-Moss shift induced by Li in α–V 2 O 5 : A DFT + DMFT study

For this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT)+U and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver to investigate the electronic properties of V 2 O 5 and Li x V 2 O 5 (x = 0.125 and 0.25). Pristine V 2 O 5 is a charge-transfer insulator with strong O p–V d hybridization, and it exhibits a large band gap (E gap ) as well as a nonzero conduction-band (CB) gap.We show that the band gap, the number of d electrons of vanadium, N d , and the CB gap for V 2 O 5 obtained from our DMFT calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental values. While the DFT +U approach replicates the experimental band gap, it overestimates the value of N d and underestimates the CB gap. In the presence of low Li doping, the electronic properties of V 2 O 5 are mainly driven by a polaronic mechanism, and electron spin resonance and electron nuclear double resonance spectroscopies observed the coexistence of free and bound polarons. Notably, our DMFT results identify both polaron types, with the bound polaron being energetically preferred, while the DFT +U method only predicts the free polaron. Our DMFT analysis also reveals that increased Li doping leads to electron filling in the conduction band, shifting the Fermi level. This result is consistent with the observed Burstein-Moss shift upon enhanced Li doping, and we thus demonstrate that the DFT + DMFT approach can be used for an accurate and realistic description of strongly correlated materials.

Effect of off-diagonal elements in the Wannier Hamiltonian on DFT + DMFT for low-symmetry materials: Study of Li 2 MnO 3

Here, we study the effect of the off-diagonal elements of the Wannier Hamiltonian on the electronic structure of the low-symmetry material Li 2 MnO 3 ( C2/m ), using dynamical mean field theory calculations with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver. The presence of significant off-diagonal elements leads to a pronounced suppression of the energy gap. The off-diagonal elements are largest when the Wannier projection is used based on the global coordinate, and they remain substantial even with the projection using the local coordinate close to the direction of Mn-O bonds. We show that the energy gap is enhanced by the diagonalization of the Mn d block in the full p-d Hamiltonian with the application of a unitary rotation matrix. Additionally, the inclusion of small double counting energy is crucial for achieving the experimental gap by reducing p-d hybridization. Furthermore, we establish the efficiency of a low-energy (d-only basis) model for studying the electronic structure of Li 2 MnO 3 , as the Wannier basis represents a hybridized state of Mn d and O p orbitals. These findings suggest an appropriate approach for investigating low-symmetry materials using the density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT + DMFT) method. We also find that the antiferromagnetic ground state $\Gamma$ 2u is stable with U ≤ 2 eV within density functional theory+$U$ calculations, which is much smaller than the widely used U = 5 eV.

J eff = $\frac{3}{2}$ metallic phase and unconventional superconductivity in GaTa 4 Se 8

By means of density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) calculations and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments, we investigate the high-pressure phases of the spin-orbit-coupled Jeff = 3/2 insulator GaTa 4 Se 8 . Its metallic phase, derived from the Mott state by applying pressure, is found to carry J eff = 3/2 moments. The characteristic excitation peak in the RIXS spectrum maintains its destructive quantum interference of J eff at the Ta L2-edge up to 10.4 GPa. Our exact diagonalization based DFT+DMFT calculations including spin-orbit coupling also reveal that the J eff = 3/2 character can be clearly identified under high pressure. These results establish the intriguing nature of the correlated metallic magnetic phase, which represents the first confirmed example of J eff =3/2 moments residing in a metal. They also indicate that the pressure-induced superconductivity is likely unconventional and influenced by these J eff = 3/2 moments. Based on a self-energy analysis, we furthermore propose the possibility of doping-induced superconductivity related to a spin-freezing crossover.

Electronic structure of LaNiO 2 and CaCuO 2 from a self-consistent vertex-corrected GW approach

In this work, the electronic structure of one of the nickelates (LaNiO 2 ) and one of the cuprates (CaCuO 2 ) is studied with three self-consistent GW-based methods: scGW, sc(GW+vertex), and quasiparticle self-consistent GW. Low-energy features obtained in our study are in many respects similar to the features reported in previous density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) studies. Consistent with the DFT+DMFT conclusion, we find LaNiO 2 to be more correlated than CaCuO 2 . However, correlation effects included in our study change the DFT Fermi surface near the Γ point differently from that reported in DMFT studies. Features that are a few electronvolts away from the Fermi level are broader in our calculations than in the DFT+DMFT, which reflects the differences between the DFT and the GW methods. Our results are in qualitative agreement with previous G0W0 results, but the self-consistency results in quantitative differences. Generally, correlation effects are found to be sufficiently weak in both materials, which allows one to use totally ab initio diagrammatic approaches such as sc(GW+Vertex) and to avoid the methods with adjustable parameters (DFT+U or DFT+DMFT). However, the possibility of some strong correlations at low energy that cannot be captured by perturbative methods cannot be completely excluded. For instance, differences in the Fermi surface should be resolved, thus experimental studies are necessary.

DMFTwDFT: An open-source code combining Dynamical Mean Field Theory with various density functional theory packages

We report Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) is a successful method to compute the electronic structure of strongly correlated materials, especially when it is combined with density functional theory (DFT). Here, we present an open-source computational package (and a library) combining DMFT with various DFT codes interfaced through the Wannier90 package. The correlated subspace is expanded as a linear combination of Wannier functions introduced in the DMFT approach as local orbitals. In particular, we provide a library mode for computing the DMFT density matrix. This library can be linked and then internally called from any DFT package, assuming that a set of localized orbitals can be generated in the correlated subspace. The existence of this library allows developers of other DFT codes to interface with our package and achieve the charge-self-consistency within DFT+DMFT loops. To test and check our implementation, we computed the density of states and the band structure of well-known solid-state correlated materials, namely LaNiO, SrVO, and NiO. The obtained results are compared to those obtained from other DFT+DMFT implementations.

Oxygen vacancy induced site-selective Mott transition in LaNiO 3

While defects such as oxygen vacancies in correlated materials can modify their electronic properties dramatically, understanding the microscopic origin of electronic correlations in materials with defects has been elusive. Lanthanum nickelate with oxygen vacancies, LaNiO 3 - x , exhibits the metal-to-insulator transition as the oxygen vacancy level x increases from the stoichiometric LaNiO 3 . In particular, LaNiO 2.5 exhibits a paramagnetic insulating phase, also stabilizing an antiferromagnetic state below T N ≃ 152 K . Here, we study the electronic structure and energetics of LaNiO 3 - x using first principles. We find that LaNiO 2.5 exhibits a “site-selective” paramagnetic Mott insulating state at T ≃ 290 K as obtained using density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory ( DFT + DMFT ). The Ni octahedron site develops a Mott insulating state with strong correlations as the Ni e g orbital is half-filled while the Ni square-planar site with apical oxygen vacancies becomes a band insulator. Overall, our oxygen vacancy results cannot be explained by the pure change of the Ni oxidation state alone within the rigid band-shift approximation. Our DFT + DMFT density of states explains that the peak splitting of unoccupied states in LaNiO 3 - x measured by the experimental x-ray absorption spectra originates from two nonequivalent Ni ions in the vacancy-ordered structure.

Low-energy interband transition in the infrared response of the correlated metal SrVO 3 in the ultraclean limit

We studied the low-energy electronic response of the prototypical correlated metal SrVO 3 in the ultraclean and disordered limit using infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory calculations (DFT+DMFT). A strong optical excitation at 70 meV is observed in the optical response of the ultraclean samples but is hidden by the low-energy Drude-like response from intraband excitations in the more disordered samples. DFT+DMFT calculations reveal that this optical excitation originates from interband transitions between the bands split by orbital off-diagonal hopping, which has often been ignored in cubic systems, such as SrVO 3 . A memory function analysis of the optical data shows that this interband transition can lead to deviations of optical self-energy from the expected Fermi-liquid behavior. Our findings demonstrate that analysis schemes employed to extract many-body effects from optical spectra may be oversimplified to study the true electronic ground state and that improvements in material quality can guide efforts to refine theoretical approaches.

Experimental confirmation of the magnetic ordering transition induced by an electronic structure change in the metallic triangular antiferromagnet Co 1/3⁢ TaS 2

We report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies combined with DFT+DMFT calculations to confirm that the magnetic ordering vector transition from Q=(1/2,0,0) to Q=(1/3,0,0) in the metallic triangular antiferromagnets Co 1/3±𝜀⁢ TaS 2 (𝜀 ≈ 0.007) is induced by the electronic structure change in the system. The ARPES-measured Fermi surface (FS) maps of Co 0.325 ⁢TaS 2 show two hexagonal and one circular holelike FSs around Γ, which matches well with the triple- Q state by taking into account the contribution of nesting vectors occurring between Co 3⁢𝑑 and Ta 5⁢𝑑 orbitals. In the case of Co 0.340 ⁢TaS 2 , a new electron pocket around K appears, and the FS geometry changes as a result of the correlation effect of Co 4 ⁢S 18 tripods forming in the system. The magnetic susceptibility calculations based on the charge-self-consistent DFT+DMFT band structures and the random phase approximation indicate that the most stable magnetic ordering vector (1/2,0,0) split into (1/6,0,0) and (1/2,0,0), which is consistent with the magnetic phase transition around 𝑥=1/3 in Co 𝑥 ⁢TaS 2 .

Hole doping and electronic correlations in Cr substituted BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

For a significant composition range, the suppression of the spin density wave transition temperature (T SDW ) in Cr- and Mn-substituted BaFe 2 As 2 (CrBFA and MnBFA, respectively) coincides as a function of Cr/Mn content, despite the distinct electronic effects of these substitutions. Additionally, for any Cr/Mn content superconductivity (SC) is absent and this topic is particularly less explored in the case of CrBFA. Here, in this work, we employ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and combined density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) to address the evolution of the Fermi surface (FS) and electronic correlations in CrBFA. Our findings reveal that incorporating Cr leads to an effective hole doping of the states near the FS, which is well described within the virtual crystal approximation (VCA). Moreover, analysis of the ARPES spectra of the bands with main d yz -orbital character reveals a fractional scaling of the imaginary part of self-energy as a function of the binding energy, a signature property of Hund's correlations. Our DFT+DMFT calculations support these experimental findings. We conclude that CrBFA is a correlated electron system for which the changes in the FS as a function of Cr are unrelated to the suppression of T SDW . In addition, we suggest that the absence of SC is primarily due to the competition between Cr local moments and the Fe-derived itinerant spin fluctuations.

Softening of dd excitation in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra as a signature of Hund's coupling in nickelates

We investigate the effects of Hund's coupling on the resonant x-ray absorption spectra of the recently discovered family of layered nickelate superconductors. We contrast two scenarios depending on the relative strength of the ratio of the effective Hund's coupling ( J H ) to the crystal fields ( Δ ) in these systems. We carry out the cluster and DFT + DMFT simulations of the RIXS signal at the Ni L edge for different values of Hund's coupling. We find the latter dominates for the parent compound while the former becomes important for sufficiently large doping. Our results are consistent with the observations of a softening of a RIXS peak as a function of doping by Rossi [], only when the Hund coupling is sizable. To interpret the results, we separate the theoretical RIXS signal into spin conserving and nonspin conserving channels and conclude that the infinite layer nickelates are in a regime where Δ and J compete effectively and suggest further experimental tests of the theory. Tetragonal BaCoO 3 : A Co 4+ Ferromagnetic Mott Insulator

We report the stabilization of the metastable body-centered tetragonal (BCT) phase of BaCoO 3 (BCT-BaCoO 3 ) under high-pressure (15 GPa) and hightemperature (1200 °C) conditions using a mixture precursor. This double perovskite adopts the EuTiO 3 -type structure (space group I4/mcm), as confirmed by powder Xray diffraction and high-resolution STEM. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates a predominant Co 4+ oxidation state without detectable oxygen vacancies. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements reveal ferromagnetic ordering at T C ∼ 107 K, attributable to the BCT-BaCoO 3 phase. Above this temperature, the mixed-phase sample exhibits Curie−Weiss paramagnetism, a low-spin to high-spin crossover upon cooling, and a possible intermediate-spin state at elevated temperatures. Resistivity data indicates insulating behavior with weak magnetoresistance. DFT and DFT + DMFT calculations suggest that the insulating state originates from an orbitally selective transition sensitive to the nominal valence of the Co-d shell. The metastable BCT-BaCoO 3 phase cannot be retained in pure form at ambient pressure but can be stabilized by embedding it in a disordered mixture, offering a potential route to discover and preserve other high-pressure phases under ambient conditions.

Exploring two-dimensional van der Waals heavy-fermion material: Data mining theoretical approach

Abstract The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials often provides interesting playgrounds to explore novel phenomena. One of the missing components in 2D vdW materials is the intrinsic heavy-fermion systems, which can provide an additional degree of freedom to study quantum critical point (QCP), unconventional superconductivity, and emergent phenomena in vdW heterostructures. Here, we investigate 2D vdW heavy-fermion candidates through the database of experimentally known compounds based on dynamical mean-field theory calculation combined with density functional theory (DFT+DMFT). We have found that the Kondo resonance state of CeSiI does not change upon exfoliation and can be easily controlled by strain and surface doping. Our result indicates that CeSiI is an ideal 2D vdW heavy-fermion material and the quantum critical point can be identified by external perturbations.

Revealing short- and long-range Li-ion diffusion in Li 2 MnO 3 from finite-temperature dynamical mean field theory

Li 2 MnO 3 is a key component of Li-excess layered cathodes of the form (1 − x), LiMO 2 + x, Li 2 MnO 3 (M = Mn, Ni, Co, …), yet its role in setting Li-ion transport limitations remains under debate. Here, in this study, we combine DFT+U, finite-temperature DFT+DMFT with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver, and nudged-elastic-band (NEB) calculations to study Li + migration in paramagnetic Li 2 MnO 3 in the presence of a single Li vacancy. Evaluating DMFT total energies along the DFT+U NEB geometries reveals that dynamical correlations strongly renormalize the lowest-barrier processes, reducing the activation energies to E a = 0.18 eV for the shortest-range hop and E a = 0.50 eV for the next-lowest (transport-controlling) step. The 0.18 eV barrier quantitatively reproduces the short-range activation energy from µ+SR, while the 0.50 eV barrier is consistent with the long-range transport scale extracted from ac-impedance measurements. This single-vacancy, paramagnetic DMFT description thus provides a unified interpretation of local and macroscopic probes without invoking clustered vacancy configurations or strong extrinsic disorder, consistent with nearly stoichiometric Li 2 MnO 3 powders. More broadly, our results highlight finite-temperature dynamical correlations as an essential ingredient for predicting ionic migration energetics in correlated oxide electrodes.

Orbital polarization, charge transfer, and fluorescence in reduced-valence nickelates

Herein this paper presents a simple formalism for calculating X-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) that has as input orbital-resolved density of states from a single particle or many-body ab initio calculation and is designed to capture itinerant-like features. We use this formalism to calculate both the XAS and RIXS with input from DFT and DFT + DMFT for the recently studied reduced valence nickelates R 4 Ni 3 O 8 and RNiO 2 (R = rare earth), and these results are then contrasted with those for the cuprate CaCuO 2 and the unreduced nickelate R 4 Ni 3 O 10 . In contrast to the unreduced R 4 Ni 3 O 10 , the reduced valence nickelates as well as the cuprate show strong orbital polarization due to the dominance of x 2 – y 2 orbitals for the unoccupied 3d states. We also reproduce two key aspects of a recent RIXS experiment for R 4 Ni 3 O 8 : (i) a charge transfer feature between 3d and oxygen 2p states whose energy we find to decrease as one goes from RNiO 2 to R 4 Ni 3 O 8 to the cuprate, and (ii) an energy-dependent polarization reversal of the fluorescence line that arises from hybridization of the unoccupied 3z 2 –r 2 states with R 5d states. We end with some implications of our results for the nature of the 3d electrons in reduced valence nickelates.

Dynamical correlations leading to site and orbital selective Mott insulator transition in hydrogen doped SmNiO 3

Electron doping induces metal -to -insulator transition (MIT) in SmNiO 3 as realized by experiments. While earlier density functional theory (DFT) studies with static correlations fell short of explaining the recent MIT observations at lower hydrogen concentrations, we present a comprehensive computational investigation employing an advanced approach. We combine DFT with dynamical mean field theory (DFT + DMFT) to efficiently analyze the insulating behavior of hydrogen -doped SmNiO 3 . In contrast to previous theoretical works, our calculations predict an insulator transition occurring at a reduced doping level of H:Ni = 0.5:1. Specifically, while the DFT + U method reveals a gap opening between p-to-d orbitals, the DMFT approach highlights a gap opening between d-to-d orbitals. Our findings uncover a selective Mott transition in site and orbital characteristics, with the Ni ions proximate to the doped hydrogen exhibiting Mott -like traits. Notably, DMFT calculations highlight a pronounced dependence on Hund's parameter J, implying the presence of Hundness in the Mott insulator. Finally, this study underscores the necessity of accounting for dynamical correlations to accurately describe the electronic structure of strongly correlated electron-doped rare-earth nickelates.
