Nuclear densitometer utilizing gamma radiation attenuation to measure liquid oxygen and hydrogen densities
Thin glass beam splitter, densitometer head, and densitometer electronics are incorporated in a standard contour projector. The density contour of small areas of photographic film can be read. This instrument can be used as a research tool in process engineering.
The utility of a scanning densitometer for analyzing imagery in the NASA Lewis Research Center's regional remote sensing program was evaluated. Uses studied include: (1) quick-look screening of imagery by means of density slicing, magnification, color coding, and edge enhancement; (2) preliminary category classification of both low- and high-resolution data bases; and (3) quantitative measurement of the extent of features within selected areas. The densitometer was capable of providing fast, convenient, and relatively inexpensive preliminary analysis of aerial and satellite photography and scanner imagery involving land cover, water quality, strip mining, and energy conservation.

Developmental densitometer system for cryogenic liquids uses two balanced ionization chambers containing xenon gas, with X rays as the radiation source. The X rays are heavily filtered with a lead shield to make the energy spectrum much less dependent on the voltage applied to the X ray tube.
Standard print-out proofing paper, preprinted with an identifying code, serves as convenient densitometer. Exposure to light darkens the paper and gives a measure of the density of the resultant photographic image or the total amount of exposure sustained by the paper.

Calibration of cryogenic densitometer for mass density measurements of upper atmosphere
Densitometer was developed which produces linear voltage proportional to changes in density of flowing liquid hydrogen. Unit has fast response time and good system stability, statistical variation, and thermal equilibrium. System accuracy is 2 percent of total density span. Basic design may be altered to include measurement of other flowing materials.
An alpha particle densitometer was developed for possible application to measurement of the atmospheric density-altitude profile on Martian entry. The device uses an Am-241 radioactive-foil source, which emits a distributed energy spectrum, located about 25 to 75 cm from a semiconductor detector. System response - defined as the number of alphas per second reaching the detector with energy above a fixed threshold - is given for Ar and CO2. The altitude profile of density measurement accuracy is given for a pure CO2 atmosphere with 5 mb surface pressure. The entire unit, including dc-dc converters, requires less than 350 milliwatts of power from +28 volts, weighs about 0.85 lb and occupies less than 15 cubic inches volume.
Researchers are developing an optical heterodyne densitometer with the potential to measure optical density over an unprecedented dynamic range with high accuracy and sensitivity. This device uses a Mach-Zender interferometer configuration with heterodyne detection to make direct comparisons between optical and RF attenuators. Researchers expect to attain measurements of filter transmittance down to 10 to the minus 12th power with better than 1 percent uncertainty. In addition, they intend to extend the technique to the problem of measuring low levels of light scattering from reflective and transmissive optics.
