An Extensible Software and Communication Platform for Distributed Energy Resource Management

This paper introduces a novel Distributed Extensible Grid Control (DEGC) software and communication platform to facilitate the control of distributed energy resources on electric grids. The DEGC software platform leverages state-of-the-art advances in secure, distributed communication and decentralized authorization and authentication. We discuss how these advances enable the kind of robust and secure communication required for a distributed grid control platform, and show how DEGC applies these technologies to the agile development and deployment of grid software through an extensible and flexible API. Here, we describe how DEGC can implement both Volt-VAR voltage magnitude control and Phasor-Based Control as sample applications and demonstrate the DEGC platform in hardware with the demanding Phasor-Based Control test case, and provide performance metrics.

Phasor Based Control with the Distributed, Extensible Grid Control Platform

This paper describes how to implement Phasor Based Control (PBC) using the Distributed, Extensible Grid Control (DEGC) Platform. PBC is a novel method for controlling distributed energy resources (DER) that coordinates a centralized optimization with distributed feedback controllers to enforce voltage phasor targets. DEGC is an open source software and communication platform designed for general DER control. We deployed PBC at Lawrence Berkeley Lab's FLEXLAB test site, conducting multiple hardware-in-the-loop test runs. Here, we describe how DEGC was used to implement PBC on hardware, and results demonstrating successful deployment.

MARCUS Ice Nucleating Particle Measurements (revised 7/2020)

These data list ice nucleating particle (INP) number concentrations active in the immersion freezing mode. Aerosol filters were collected during 4 voyages of the Aurora Australis vessel from 02 November 2017 to 22 March 2018, as part of the Measurements of Aerosols, Radiation and Clouds over the Southern Ocean (MARCUS) study. These voyages transected the Southern Ocean from Hobart, Tasmania to four Australian Antarctic Division stations, including three in Antarctica. Collections were made over alternating periods of 24 and 48 hours using open-faced polycarbonate filters that were approximately 18 m MSL, sited near the AOS trailer and other AMF measurements. The volume of air filtered ranged from 19000 to 38000 standard liters per filter sample. Filters were stored and returned frozen to Colorado State University (CSU), where immersion freezing measurements over a range from 0 to -28 degC were made using the CSU Ice Spectrometer (IS). Collected particles from each filter were resuspended in filtered, deionized water, and then dispensed into the IS and cooled to obtain cumulative INP temperature spectra. Aliquots of suspensions from selected samples were also heat treated (95 degC for 20 min) to denature and deactivate biological INPs, and digested in 10% H2O2 at 95 degC under UV-B for 20 min to remove all organic carbon INPs, prior to measurement using the IS.

Utah FORGE Hydrothermal Friction-Hydraulic Transmissivity Laboratory Experiments

Submission includes data from laboratory slide-hold-slide tests, combined with flow through tests, conducted on Westerly granite with 30 degree sawcut. Tests were conducted with a constant confining pressure of 30 MPa with an average pore pressure of 10 MPa at temperatures of 23 and 200 degC. Three fluid flow conditions were examined (1) no flow, (2) cycled flow, and (3) continuous flow. Data were collected to asses the effect of temperature and pore fluid on frictional healing rates in granite at geothermal conditions. Data is available in XML and JSON data types.
