Leveraging the Run 3 experience for the evolution of the ATLAS software-based readout towards HL-LHC

The High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), scheduled to start operating in 2030, aims to increase the instantaneous luminosity by a factor of 10 compared to the LHC. To match this increase, the ATLAS experiment has been implementing a major upgrade program divided into two phases. The first phase (Phase-I), completed in 2022, introduced new trigger and detector systems that have been used during the Run 3 data taking period which began in July 2022. These systems have been used in conjunction with the new Data Acquisition (DAQ) Readout system, based on a software application called Software Readout Driver (SW ROD). SW ROD receives and aggregates data from the front-end electronics via the Front-End Link eXchange (FELIX) system and passes aggregated data fragments to the High-Level Trigger (HLT) system. During Run 3, SW ROD operates in parallel with the legacy Readout System (ROS) at an input rate of 100 kHz. For the Phase-II, the legacy ROS will be completely replaced with a new system based on the next generation of FELIX and an evolution of the SW ROD application called Data Handler. Data Handler has the same functional requirements as SW ROD but must be able to operate at an input rate of 1 MHz. To facilitate this evolution the SW ROD has been implemented using plugin architecture. This contribution presents the design and implementation of the SW ROD application for Run 3, along with the strategy for its evolution to the Phase-II Readout system. It discusses the lessons learned during Run 3 and describes the challenges that have been addressed to accomplish the demanding performance requirements of HL-LHC.

A CCD System for Photometry of Direct and Spectroscopic Images

A charge-coupled device (CCD) for direct imagery at the focus of a ground-based telescope and for high dispersion spectroscopy of stars is evaluated. The CCD is an RCA SID 53612 thinned, buried channel array of 512x320 30-micron square pixels that are back-illuminated and refrigerated to about -60 C in a rugged, RF-shielded vacuum housing. The double-correlated sampling (integrator) readout system, the Z80 microprocessor readout control system, and the data collection system are described. The readout noise is 120 electron-hole pairs (ehp) per pixel per readout, the thermal dark current is 50 ehp/pixel/sec, and the scale of the 12-bit analog-to-digital converter is 25 ehp/AD unit. Unique features of this system are compared to other astronomical implementations of the same model of CCD.

Spaceborne Hybrid-FPGA System for Processing FTIR Data

Progress has been made in a continuing effort to develop a spaceborne computer system for processing readout data from a Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer to reduce the volume of data transmitted to Earth. The approach followed in this effort, oriented toward reducing design time and reducing the size and weight of the spectrometer electronics, has been to exploit the versatility of recently developed hybrid field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to run diverse software on embedded processors while also taking advantage of the reconfigurable hardware resources of the FPGAs.

Rad-hard readout system for Timepix3 Hybrid Pixel Detectors

The Beam Gas Ionisation (BGI) profile monitor, located in the Proton Synchrotron (PS) and Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN, requires a radiation-tolerant readout system to transfer data from the challenging accelerator surroundings to the back-end for processing. The system needs to control and acquire data from four Timepix3 Hybrid Pixel Detectors (HPDs) located directly inside the beam pipe, a highly radioactive environment. It must ensure reliability given limited hardware access and preserve signal integrity for the high-speed data (32 channels at 320 MHz). However, due to the unavailability of a suitable rad-hard Timepix3 readout, the Beam Instrumentation PiXeL (BIPXL) readout system was designed to meet these requirements. This system employs radiation-hardened components such as the GBTx and the FEASTMP, both developed at CERN. It will be compatible with forthcoming hybrid pixel detector initiatives in similarly harsh radiation conditions.

Crystal Calorimetry for Charged Lepton Flavor Violation Searches

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab aims to search for Charged Lepton Flavor Violation (CLFV) through the coherent conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. This process, highly suppressed in the Standard Model, would clearly indicate new physics if observed. A crucial component of Mu2e is its electromagnetic calorimeter, which enhances the identification and measurement of conversion electrons. The calorimeter consists of two disks of undoped CsI crystals read out by custom-designed SiPMs and fast front-end electronics. This paper presents an overview of the calorimeter’s design, its custom SiPM technology, the readout and data acquisition system, and the results from commissioning tests.Building on the experience from Mu2e, the proposed Mu2e-II upgrade aims to enhance further the experiment’s sensitivity by an order of magnitude. This requires significant advancements in calorimeter technology, particularly in crystal materials and photodetector performance. Studies on BaF$_2$ and LYSO crystals, as well as the development of radiation-hard Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs), are currently underway. Test beam results demonstrate promising improvements in energy resolution and timing capabilities, ensuring the feasibility of next-generation calorimetry solutions for Mu2e-II.

Skeletal status and soft tissue composition in astronauts. Tissue and fluid changes by radionuclide absorptiometry in vivo

A device has been constructed and tested which provides immediate readout of bone mineral content and bone width from absorptiometric scans with low energy radionuclides. The basis of this analog system is a logarithmic converter-integrator coupled with a precision linear ratemeter. The system provided accurate and reliable results on standards and ashed bone sections. Clinical measurements were made on about 100 patients with the direct readout system, and these were highly correlated with the results from digital scan data on the same patients. The direct readout system has been used successfully in field studies and surveys as well as for clinical observations.

A summary of ERTS-1 data collection system applications

Geographically, applications were made over nearly the entire area where direct readout could be accomplished using the data acquisition stations in the ERTS-1 system. The extreme areas included Iceland, the Canadian Arctic, Alaska, Hawaii and Central America. In the discipline sense the majority of applications were in the water resources area with other applications being formally and informally reported in meteorology, oceanography, volcano surveillance and forestry. Installation and maintenance of the data collection platforms, as is true with nearly all new systems, was not accomplished without difficulty. On the whole, however, it has gone well enough so that it is agreed that it is a system which is amenable to installation in a variety of physical situations and the installation is accomplished with an ease commensurate with eventual use in an operational system.

User data dissemination concepts for earth resources: Executive summary

The impact of the future capabilities of earth-resources data sensors (both satellite and airborne) and their requirements on the data dissemination network were investigated and optimum ways of configuring this network were determined. The scope of this study was limited to the continental U.S.A. (including Alaska) and to the 1985-1995 time period. Some of the conclusions and recommendations reached were: (1) Data from satellites in sun-synchronous polar orbits (700-920 km) will generate most of the earth-resources data in the specified time period. (2) Data from aircraft and shuttle sorties cannot be readily integrated in a data-dissemination network unless already preprocessed in a digitized form to a standard geometric coordinate system. (3) Data transmission between readout stations and central preprocessing facilities, and between processing facilities and user facilities are most economically performed by domestic communication satellites. (4) The effect of the following factors should be studied: cloud cover, expanded coverage, pricing strategies, multidiscipline missions.

Optical mass memory investigation

The MASTER 1 optical mass storage system advanced working model (AWM) was designed to demonstrate recording and playback of imagery data and to enable quantitative data to be derived as to the statistical distribution of raw errors experienced through the system. The AWM consists of two subsystems, the recorder and storage and retrieval. The recorder subsystem utilizes key technologies such as an acoustic travelling wave lens to achieve recording of digital data on fiche at a rate of 30 Mbits/sec, whereas the storage and retrieval reproducer subsystem utilizes a less complex optical system that employs an acousto-optical beam deflector to achieve data readout at a 5 Mbits/sec rate. The system has the built in capability for detecting and collecting error statistics. The recorder and storage and retrieval subsystems operate independent of one another and are each constructed in modular form with each module performing independent functions. The operation of each module and its interface to other modules is controlled by one controller for both subsystems.
