Magnetic properties of the frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ capped-kagome antiferromagnet (CsBr)Cu 5 V 2 O 10

Here, the structural and magnetic properties of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ averievite (CsBr)⁢Cu 5⁢ V 2 ⁢O 10 are investigated by means of temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, and 51 V nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. The crystal structure (trigonal, $P\bar{3}$) features a frustrated capped-kagome lattice of the magnetic Cu 2+ ions. Magnetic susceptibility analysis indicates a large Curie-Weiss temperature of $\theta$ CW ≃ -175K. Heat capacity signals the onset of a magnetic long-range-order (LRO) at T N ≃21.5K at zero magnetic field due to the presence of significant inter-planer coupling in this system. The magnetic LRO below 27 K is further evident from the drastic change in the 51 V NMR signal intensity and rapid enhancement in the 51 V spin-lattice relaxation rate in a magnetic field of 6.3 T. The frustration index ƒ=|⁢$\theta$ CW ⁢|/⁢T N ≃ 8 ascertains strong magnetic frustration in this compound. From the high-temperature value of the 51 V NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate, the leading antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the Cu 2+ ions is calculated to be J/k B ≃ 136K.

A method to apply Zavitsas' aqueous electrolyte model to multicomponent solutions and its equivalence to Zdanovskii's rule

Abstract Zavitsas developed an aqueous electrolyte thermodynamic model and applied it to single electrolyte solutions previously. Here, a method to apply the model to multicomponent solutions is derived by setting the water activity to the mole fraction of free water in the mixture. The method is shown to work effectively for the CsBr‐KNO 3 ‐H 2 O and CsCl‐KNO 3 ‐H 2 O systems at 100.3°C even at concentrations greater than 6 molal. The largest error in the prediction of water activities was just −0.00365 for the CsBr‐KNO 3 ‐H 2 O system and −0.00631 for the CsCl‐KNO 3 ‐H 2 O system. Zavitsas' model naturally obeys Zdanovskii's rule because when two electrolyte solutions with the same fraction of free water are mixed together, water is obviously going to have that same fraction in the mixture. This means that Zavitsas' model will likely work well for the many electrolytes that obey Zdanovskii's rule.

Water-Dispersible CsPbBr 3 Perovskite Nanocrystals with Ultra-Stability and its Application in Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction

Thanks to the excellent optoelectronic properties, lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have been widely employed in high-performance optoelectronic devices such as solar cells and light-emitting diodes. However, overcoming their poor stability against water has been one of the biggest challenges for most applications. Herein, we report a novel hot-injection method in a Pb-poor environment combined with a well-designed purification process to synthesize water-dispersible CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals (NCs). The as-prepared NCs sustain their superior photoluminescence (91% quantum yield in water) for more than 200 days in an aqueous environment, which is attributed to a passivation effect induced by excess CsBr salts. Thanks to the ultra-stability of these LHP NCs, for the first time, we report a new application of LHP NCs, in which they are applied to electrocatalysis of CO 2 reduction reaction. Noticeably, they show significant electrocatalytic activity (faradaic yield: 32% for CH 4 , 40% for CO) and operation stability (> 350 h).

Two-step spin-coating of vacancy-ordered double perovskites enables growth of thin films for electronic devices

Vacancy-ordered double perovskites (VODPs), such as Cs 2 TeX 6 (X = Cl, Br, I), are lead-free alternatives to conventional metal-halide perovskites (MHPs). One limitation of VODPs is the lack of processes to form thin films relevant for physical characterization and electronic devices. A two-step spin-coating method was developed for synthesizing high-quality films of Cs 2 TeBr 6 . Independently depositing CsBr and TeBr 4 enables high precursor concentrations and control over crystallization kinetics. By optimizing the spin-coating parameters, conversion of precursors to phase pure films was observed using structural and surface characterization methods. The growth of mixed-halide systems was investigated using alternative salts including CsCl and CsI. The formation of halide alloys was found to depend on the existence of routes to byproducts. Lastly, single carrier diodes of Cs2TeBr6 were designed following valence band characterization with photoelectron spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent space-charge-limited current measurements revealed that transport occurs by hopping and the hole mobility is 3.2 × 10 −5 cm 2 V −1 s −1 near room temperature. As a result, the insights from the 2-step procedure provide a pathway towards making semiconducting devices from VODPs.

Photoelectron energy spectra of opaque photocathodes in the extreme and far ultraviolet

Measurements of the EUV quantum detection efficiency (QDE) of opaque RbBr, CsBr, and KBr photocathodes are described and investigations of their photoemission characteristics over the 44-1560 A wavelength range are reported. The results show that high QDEs can be obtained in the EUV. Narrow QDE peaks at soft X-ray wavelengths occur at slightly different wavelengths for each of the materials studied. The long-wavelength thresholds vary according to the material band gap. Data on the photoemission from the photocathode layer on the microchannel plate interchannel web area are used to determine the number and energy distribution of the emitted photoelelectrons as a function of wavelength.
