Mechanism of enhanced critical fields and critical current densities of MgB2 wires with C/Dy$^{2}$O3 co-additions

A series of monofilamentary powder-in-tube MgB2 wires were fabricated with 2 mol. % C doping and co-additions of 0–3 wt. % Dy2O3. Irreversibility fields (μ0Hirr), upper critical fields (μ0Hc2), and transport critical currents were measured, and from these quantities, anisotropies (γ) and electronic diffusivities (Dπ,σ) were estimated. The addition of 1 wt. % Dy2O3 to already optimally C-doped MgB2 wires produced higher Hc2//ab, Hc2//c, and Hirr values at 4.2 K. In addition, the critical current density, Jc, increased with Dy2O3 concentration up to 1 wt. % where non-barrier Jc reached 4.35 × 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K, 10 T. At higher temperatures, for example, 20 K and 5 T, co-additions of 2 mol. % C and 2 wt. % Dy2O3 improved non-barrier Jc by 40% and 93% compared to 2 and 3 mol. % C doping, respectively. On the other hand, measurements of Tc showed that C/Dy2O3 co-additions increase interband scattering rates at a lower rate than C doping does (assuming C doping levels giving similar levels of low-T μ0Hc2 increase as co-addition). Comparisons to a two-band model for μ0Hc2 in MgB2 allowed us to conclude that the increases in Hc2//ab, Hc2//c, and Hirr (as well as concomitant increases in high-field Jc) with Dy2O3 addition are consistent with increases primarily in intraband scattering. This suggests C/Dy2O3 co-addition to be a more promising candidate for improving non-barrier Jc of MgB2 at temperatures above 20 K.

Exchange field enhanced upper critical field of the superconductivity in compressed antiferromagnetic EuTe2

Abstract Understanding the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism has been a longstanding challenge in condensed matter physics. Here we report high pressure studies on the C -type antiferromagnetic semiconductor EuTe 2 up to 36.0 GPa. A structural transition from the I4/mcm to the C2/m space group is identified at ~16 GPa. Superconductivity is observed above ~5 GPa in both structures. In the low-pressure phase, magnetoresistance measurements reveal strong couplings between the local moments of Eu 2+ and the conduction electrons of Te 5 p orbits. The upper critical field of superconductivity is well above the Pauli limit. While EuTe 2 becomes nonmagnetic in the high-pressure phase and the upper critical field drops below the Pauli limit. Our results demonstrate that the high upper critical field of EuTe 2 in the low-pressure phase is due to the exchange field compensation effect of Eu 2+ and the superconductivity in both structures may arise in the framework of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory.

Spin susceptibility, upper critical field, and disorder effect in $j = \frac{3}{2}$ superconductors with singlet–quintet mixing

Recently, a new pairing state with the mixing between the s-wave singlet channel and the isotropic d-wave quintet channel induced by centrosymmetric spin–orbit coupling has been theoretically proposed in the superconducting materials with $j = \frac{3}{2}$ electrons [J. Yu and C.-X. Liu, Phys. Rev. B 98, 104514 (2018)]. In this article, we derive the expressions of the zero-temperature spin susceptibility, the upper critical field close to the zero-field critical temperature T c , and the critical temperature with weak random non-magnetic disorders for the singlet–quintet mixed state based on the Luttinger model. Our study reveals the following features of the singlet–quintet mixing. (1) The zero-temperature spin susceptibility remains zero for the singlet–quintet mixed state if only the centrosymmetric spin–orbit coupling is taken into account and deviates from zero when the non-centrosymmetric spin–orbit coupling is introduced. (2) The singlet–quintet mixing can help enhance the upper critical field roughly because it can increase T c . (3) Although the quintet channel is generally suppressed by the non-magnetic disorder scattering, we find the strong mixing between singlet and quintet channels can help to stabilize the quintet channel. As a result, we still find a sizable quintet component mixed into the singlet channel in the presence of weak random non-magnetic disorders. Our work provides the guidance for future experiments on spin susceptibility and upper critical field of the singlet–quintet mixed superconducting states and illustrates the stability of the singlet–quintet mixing against the weak random non-magnetic disorder.

Competing pairing interactions responsible for the large upper critical field in a stoichiometric iron-based superconductor CaKFe4As4

The upper critical field of multiband superconductors is an important quantity that can reveal details about the nature of the superconducting pairing. Here in this paper we experimentally map out the complete upper-critical-field phase diagram of a stoichiometric superconductor, CaKFe 4 As 4 , up to 90 T for different orientations of the magnetic field and at temperatures down to 4.2 K . The upper critical fields are extremely large, reaching values close to ~ 3T c at the lowest temperature, and the anisotropy decreases dramatically with temperature, leading to essentially isotropic superconductivity at 4.2 K . We find that the temperature dependence of the upper critical field can be well described by a two-band model in the clean limit with band-coupling parameters favoring intraband over interband interactions. The large Pauli paramagnetic effects together with the presence of the shallow bands is consistent with the stabilization of an FFLO state at low temperatures in this clean superconductor.

Critical fields of superconductors with magnetic impurities

The upper critical field H c2 , the field H c3 for nucleation of the surface superconductivity, and the thermodynamic field H c are evaluated within the weak-coupling theory for the isotropic s-wave case with arbitrary transport, and pair-breaking scattering. In this study, we find that, for the standard geometry of a half-space sample in a magnetic field parallel to the surface, the ratio $\mathscr{R}$=H c3 /H c2 is within the window 1.55≲$\mathscr{R}$≲2.34 , regardless of temperature or the scattering type. While the nonmagnetic impurities tend to flatten the $\mathscr{R}$($\mathrm{T}$) variation, magnetic scattering merely shifts the maximum of $\mathscr{R}$($\mathrm{T}$) to lower temperatures. Surprisingly, while reducing the transition temperature, magnetic scattering has a milder impact on $\mathscr{R}$ than nonmagnetic scattering. The surface superconductivity is quite robust; in fact, the ratio $\mathscr{R}$≈1.7 even in the gapless state. We used Eilenberger's energy functional to evaluate the condensation energy F c and the thermodynamic critical field H c for any temperature and scattering parameters. By comparing H c2 and H c , we find that, unlike transport scattering, the pair-breaking pushes materials toward type-I behavior. Furthermore, we find a peculiar behavior of F c as a function of the pair-breaking scattering parameter at the low-$\mathrm{T}$ transition from gapped to gapless phases, which has recently been associated with the topological transition in the superconducting density of states.

Large critical fields in superconducting Ti 4 ⁢Ir 2⁢ O from spin-orbit coupling

The recently synthesized 𝜂-carbide-type superconductors exhibit large critical fields. A notable example is Ti 4 ⁢Ir2⁢ O, for which the upper critical field strongly violates the Pauli paramagnetic limit, a behavior that is unusual for cubic materials that preserve inversion symmetry. Here, by combining density functional theory (DFT) and analytic modeling, we provide an explanation for this enhanced Pauli limiting field. We show that the nonsymmorphic Fd⁢-3 ⁢m symmetry implies that the electronic states near the X points exhibit strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which leads to a vanishing effective 𝑔 factor and enables the enhanced Pauli limiting field. Furthermore, our DFT results reveal a Van Hove singularity peak near the X points, accounting for ∼65% of the total density of states (DOS), occurring near the chemical potential. We propose that the strong SOC and enhanced DOS in the vicinity of the X points provide the origin of the observed enhancement of the critical field. This leads to a prediction that the magnetic field will lead to a strongly momentum-dependent gap suppression. As a result, the gap due to electronic states away from (near to) the X points will be rapidly (slowly) suppressed by fields.

The proximity effect and critical field behavior of Re/Al bilayers

Abstract We report the perpendicular critical field H c 2 properties of disordered Re-Al bilayers via magneto-transport measurements. The bilayers consisted of a d Re = 3 nm bottom layer of Re and an upper Al layer with thickness varying between d Al = 0 − 3 nm. We find that in this range of Al thicknesses, the bilayer transition temperature T c increases with increasing Al thickness, although their monolayer counterparts have T c Re > T c Al . Furthermore, H c 2 of the bilayers has a local maximum at an Al coverage of 1.5 nm with a critical field that is 50% larger than that of the standalone 3 nm Re film. At higher Al thicknesses H c 2 drops rapidly but remains more than an order of magnitude greater that that of comparable thickness standalone Al film. Our data show that a thin, disordered Re under-layer can dramatically increase the magnetic field tolerance of the Al over-layer. This would allow one to retain the desirable chemical and metallurgical properties of Al without sacrificing high field compatibility in quantum circuits, such as topological qubit devices and superinductor circuits.

Practically universal representation of the Helfand-Werthamer upper critical field for any transport scattering rate

Here, the simplified scaling of the orbital upper critical field, H c2 ⁡(T), for an isotropic s-wave superconductor is introduced. To facilitate the analysis of the experimental data, we suggest a simple but accurate approximation of the Helfand-Werthamer upper critical field in the entire temperature range valid for any transport scattering rate: H c⁢2 ⁡/⁢H c⁢⁢2 ⁡(0) ≈ (1 -t 2 )/(1 + 0.42t 1.47 ).

Evidence of dynamical effects and critical field in a cobalt spin crossover complex

The [Co(SQ) 2 (4-CN-py) 2 ] complex exhibits dynamical effects over a wide range of temperature. Additionally, the orbital moment, determined by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) with decreasing applied magnetic field, indicates a nonzero critical field for net alignment of magnetic moments, an effect not seen with the spin moment of [Co(SQ) 2 (4-CN-py) 2 ].

Influence of Nb alloying on Nb recrystallization and the upper critical field of Nb 3 ⁢Sn

Nb 3 Sn conductors are important candidates for high-field magnets for particle accelerators, and they continue to be widely used for many laboratory and NMR magnets. However, the critical current density, J c , of present Nb 3 Sn conductors declines swiftly above 12-15 T. State-of-the-art Ta- and Ti-doped strands exhibit upper critical field, H c2 , values of ~ 24-26.5 T (4.2 K) and do not reach the FCC target J c , which serves as the present stretch target for Nb 3 Sn development. As recently demonstrated, to meet this goal requires enhanced vortex pinning but an independent and supplementary approach is to significantly enhance H c2 . In this study, we have arc-melted multiple Nb alloys with added Hf, Zr, Ta and Ti and drawn them successfully into monofilament wires to investigate the possibilities of H c2 enhancement through alloying. H c2 (T) was measured for all samples in fields up to 16 T and some up to 31 T. We have found that all alloys show good agreement with the standard Werthamer, Helfand, and Hohenberg (WHH) fitting procedure without the need to adjust the paramagnetic limitation parameter (α) and spin-orbit scattering parameter (λ so ). The evaluation of dH c2 /dT near T c , which is proportional to the electronic specific heat coefficient γ and the normal state resistivity ρn, allows a better understanding of the induced disorder introduced by alloying in the A15 phase. So far, we have observed that Hf alloying of pure Nb can enhance H c2 (0) by 3-4 T to ~28 T, while adding just 1 at. %Hf or Zr into a Nb4Ta base alloy can raise H c2 (0) to ~31 T. Very importantly we find that Hf and Zr raise the alloy recrystallization temperature above the usual A15 reaction temperature range of 650°C – 750°C, thus ensuring denser A15 phase nucleation in the Nb alloy grain boundaries, possibly leading to a more homogeneous A15 phase Sn content and refined A15 grain size. Furthermore, the potential for further advancements in Nb 3 Sn properties is explored in relation to the recrystallization of the Nb alloy and the factors controlling the upper critical field.

Disorder-dependent slopes of the upper critical field in nodal and nodeless superconductors

In this work we study the slopes of the upper critical field S = ∂H c2 /∂T at the superconducting transition temperature T c in anisotropic superconductors with transport (nonmagnetic) scattering employing the Ginzburg-Landau theory, developed for this case by Pokrovsky and Pokrovsky [Phys. Rev. B 54, 13275 (1996)]. We find unexpected behavior of the slopes for a d -wave superconductor and, in a more general case, of materials with line nodes in the order parameter. Specifically, the presence of line nodes causes S to decrease with increasing nonmagnetic scattering parameter P = ℏ/2πT c0 τ (T c0 is for the clean limit, τ is the scattering time), unlike the nodeless case where the slope increases. In a pure d -wave case, the slope changes from decreasing to increasing when the scattering parameter approaches P ≈ 0.91 P crit , where P crit ≈ 0.28, at which T c → 0, which implies the existence of a “gapless” state in d -wave superconductors with transport scattering in the interval, 0.91 P crit < P < P crit . Furthermore, we consider the mixed (s + d)-wave order parameter with four nodes on a cylindrical Fermi surface when the d part is dominant, or no nodes at all when the s-wave phase dominates. We find that the presence of nodes causes the slope S(P) to decrease initially with increasing P, whereas in the nodeless state, S(P) monotonically increases. Therefore, relatively straightforward measurements of the disorder dependence of the slope of H c2 at T c can help distinguish between nodal and nodeless order parameters, which is particularly useful for quickly assessing newly discovered superconductors.

Critical temperature T c and Pauli limited critical field of Sr 2 RuO 4 : Uniaxial strain dependence

Variations of critical temperature T c and in-plane critical field H c 2 of Sr 2 Ru O 4 under uniaxial stress were recently reported. We compare the strain dependence of T c and H c 2 in various pairing channels ( d wave, extended s wave, and p -wave) with the experimental observations by studying a three-band tight-binding model that includes effects of spin-orbit and Zeeman couplings and a separable pairing interaction. Our study helps narrow down the possibility of pairing channels. The importance of the multiband nature of Sr 2 Ru O 4 is also highlighted.

Slope of the upper critical field at T c in two-band superconductors with nonmagnetic disorder: s + + superconductivity in Ba 1 − x K x Fe 2 As 2

A recent theory of the disorder-dependent slope of the upper critical field at the superconducting transition temperature T c , defined as S ≡ |dH c2 /dT| T→T c , is extended to multiband superconductors aimed at iron-based superconductors, considering two constant gaps of different magnitudes and, potentially, different signs. Here, we show that the slope S decreases with increasing nonmagnetic scattering rate P in the s ± pairing state and increases in the s ++ superconductor for a reasonable range of parameters. The experiment shows that in a typical iron-based superconductor, Ba 1–x K x Fe 2 As 2 (BaK122), the nonmagnetic disorder induced by electron irradiation leads to an increasing S(P) across the superconducting “dome,” at different x. This implies that Ba 1–x K x Fe 2 As 2 is likely an s ++ superconductor with two effective gaps of different magnitudes, at least at moderate doping levels, x< 0.6. This work reopens a decade-long discussion about the nature of the superconducting order parameter in iron pnictides.

Temperature dependence and limiting mechanisms of the upper critical field of FeSe thin films

We use magnetoresistance measurements at high magnetic field (μ 0⁢ H ≤ 65 T) and low temperature (T ≥ 500 mK) to gain fresh insights into the behavior of the upper critical field H c⁢2 in superconducting ultrathin FeSe films of varying degrees of disorder, grown by molecular beam epitaxy on SrTiO 3 . Measurements of H c⁢2 across samples with a widely varying superconducting critical temperature (1.2 K ≤ T c ≤ 21 K) generically show similar qualitative temperature dependence. Here, we analyze the temperature dependence of H c⁢2 in the context of Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) theory. The analysis yields parameters that indicate a strong Pauli paramagnetic pair-breaking mechanism which is also reflected by pseudoisotropic superconductivity in the limit of zero temperature. In the lower T c samples, we observe a spin-orbit scattering-driven enhancement of H c⁢2 above the strongly-coupled Pauli paramagnetic limit. We also observe clear deviations from WHH theory at low temperature, regardless of T c . We attribute this to the multiband superconductivity of FeSe and possibly to the emergence of a low-temperature, high-field superconducting phase.

Capping layer influence and isotropic in-plane upper critical field of the superconductivity at the FeSe / SrTiO 3 interface

Understanding the superconductivity at the interface of FeSe/SrTiO 3 is a problem of great contemporary interest due to the significant increase in critical temperature (T c ) compared to that of bulk FeSe, as well as the possibility of an unconventional pairing mechanism and topological superconductivity. We report a study of the influence of a capping layer on superconductivity in thin films of FeSe grown on SrTiO 3 using molecular beam epitaxy. We used in vacuo four-probe electrical resistance measurements and ex situ magnetotransport measurements to examine the effect of three capping layers that provide distinct charge transfer into FeSe: insulating FeTe, nonmetallic Te, and metallic Zr. Our results show that FeTe provides an optimal cap that barely influences the inherent T c found in pristine FeSe/SrTiO 3 , while the transfer of holes from a nonmetallic Te cap completely suppresses superconductivity and leads to insulating behavior. Finally, we used ex situ magnetoresistance measurements in FeTe capped FeSe films to extract the angular dependence of the in-plane upper critical magnetic field. Our observations reveal an almost isotropic in-plane upper critical field, providing insight into the symmetry and pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in FeSe.

Effects of rare-earth magnetism on the superconducting upper critical field in infinite-layer nickelates

The search for superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates was motivated by analogy to the cuprates, and this perspective has framed much of the initial consideration of this material. However, a growing number of studies have highlighted the involvement of rare-earth orbitals; in that context, the consequences of varying the rare-earth element in the superconducting nickelates have been much debated. Here, we show notable differences in the magnitude and anisotropy of the superconducting upper critical field across the La-, Pr-, and Nd-nickelates. These distinctions originate from the 4f electron characteristics of the rare-earth ions in the lattice: They are absent for La 3+ , nonmagnetic for the Pr 3+ singlet ground state, and magnetic for the Nd 3+ Kramer’s doublet. The unique polar and azimuthal angle-dependent magnetoresistance found in the Nd-nickelates can be understood to arise from the magnetic contribution of the Nd 3+ 4f moments. Such robust and tunable superconductivity suggests potential in future high-field applications.

Ultrathin epitaxial NbN superconducting films with high upper critical field grown at low temperature

Ultrathin (5–50 nm) epitaxial superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) films were grown on AlN-buffered c-plane Al 2 O 3 by an industrial scale physical vapor deposition technique at 400°C. Both X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis show high crystallinity of the (111)-oriented NbN films, with a narrow full-width-at-half-maximum of the rocking curve down to 0.030°. The lattice constant decreases with decreasing NbN layer thickness, suggesting lattice strain for films with thicknesses below 20 nm. The superconducting transition temperature, the transition width, the upper critical field, the irreversibility line, and the coherence length are closely correlated to the film thickness. This work realized high quality ultrathin epitaxial NbN films by an industry-scale PVD technology at low substrate temperature, which opens up new opportunities for quantum devices.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing induced by a Weyl nodal line in an Ising superconductor with a high critical field

Superconductivity and electron topology are two quantum phenomena that have attracted much interest, but no causal relationship between them has been reported because superconductivity is a many-body effect due to electron-electron interaction, while electron topology is a single-particle manifestation of electron states. In this work, we demonstrate that electron topology can induce Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing in Ising Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (IBCS) superconductors. Specifically, we predict that the nonmagnetic metals of the MA 2 Z 4 family, including α 1 -TaSi 2 P 4 , α 1 -TaSi 2 N 4 , α 2 -TaGe 2 P 4 , α 1 -NbSi 2 P 4 , and α 2 -NbGe 2 P 4 monolayers, are all IBCS superconductors with a transition temperature ranging from a few to tens of degrees Kelvin. The intrinsic IBCS pairing alone will enhance the in-plane critical field B c to ~20–60 times the Pauli limit B p , and the extrinsic FFLO pairing evoked by topological Weyl nodal lines under a magnetic field can further double the B c /B p ratio. Our findings not only enrich the fundamental relationship between superconductivity and electron topology, but they also yield an effective approach to enhance the robustness of superconductivity.
