Materials Data on CrBr3 by Materials Project

CrBr3 is Bismuth triodide structured and crystallizes in the trigonal P-3 space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of three CrBr3 sheets oriented in the (0, 0, 1) direction. Cr3+ is bonded to six equivalent Br1- atoms to form edge-sharing CrBr6 octahedra. All Cr–Br bond lengths are 2.52 Å. Br1- is bonded in an L-shaped geometry to two equivalent Cr3+ atoms.

Observation of Topological Chirality Switching Induced Freezing of a Skyrmion Crystal

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected quasi-particles with a well-defined chirality. Control over their chirality is proposed as an additional feature for encoding data bits or as qubits in quantum computing due to their high efficiency and stability against achiral magnetic textures. Here it is shown that an in-plane magnetic field can be utilized to reshape the energy barriers between different skyrmionic bubbles (e.g., Bloch type, type-II) enabling spontaneous chirality fluctuations with a frequency that increases with the strength of the in-plane field. The insulating van der Waals ferromagnet CrBr3 is used as an archetypal system for low damping, reduced energy dissipation and a high number of magnetic phases to capture the chirality dynamics in real time through cryo-Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. It is observed that the interplay between the intrinsic Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction and out-of-plane field biased the chirality dynamics, favoring one handedness over the other. A remarkable consequence of the spontaneous chirality switching mechanism is that it induces a freezing (or crystallization) process in the skyrmion lattice. As the bubbles fluctuate between Bloch and type-II they elongate and shrink parallel to the in-plane field. Subsequently, the overall lattice crystallizes along the in-plane field direction, inducing a phase transition from a disordered liquid state to a hexatic phase where skyrmions are highly ordered resembling that of a solid. The results indicate chirality as an active element in the creation of topologically protected skyrmion crystals unveiling pathways toward chiral spintronic device platforms with tunable embedded configuration.

Two-Dimensional van der Waals Nanoplatelets with Robust Ferromagnetism

We have synthesized unique colloidal nanoplatelets of the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals ferromagnet CrI3 and have characterized these nanoplatelets structurally, magnetically, and by magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. The CrI3 nanoplatelets have lateral dimensions of ~25 nm and thicknesses of only ~4 nm, corresponding to just a few CrI3 monolayers. Magnetic and magneto-optical measurements demonstrate robust 2D ferromagnetic ordering with Curie temperatures similar to bulk CrI3, despite their small size. These data also show magnetization steps akin to those observed in micron-sized few-layer 2D sheets associated with concerted spin-reversal of individual CrI3 layers within few-layer van der Waals stacks. Similar data have also been obtained for CrBr3 and anion-alloyed Cr(I1–xBrx)3 nanoplatelets. These results represent the first example of lateral nanostructures of 2D van der Waals ferromagnets of any composition. The demonstration of robust ferromagnetism at nanometer lateral dimensions opens new doors for miniaturization in spintronics devices based on van der Waals ferromagnets.

Asymmetric magnetic proximity interactions in MoSe 2 /CrBr 3 van der Waals heterostructures

Magnetic proximity interactions between atomically thin semiconductors and two-dimensional magnets provide a means to manipulate spin and valley degrees of freedom in non-magnetic monolayers, without using applied magnetic fields. In such van der Waals heterostructures, magnetic proximity interactions originate in the nanometre-scale coupling between spin-dependent electronic wavefunctions in the two materials, and typically their overall effect is regarded as an effective magnetic field acting on the semiconductor monolayer. Here we demonstrate that magnetic proximity interactions in van der Waals heterostructures can in fact be markedly asymmetric. Valley-resolved reflection spectroscopy of MoSe2/CrBr3 van der Waals structures reveals strikingly different energy shifts in the K and K' valleys of the MoSe2 due to ferromagnetism in the CrBr3 layer. Density functional calculations indicate that valley-asymmetric magnetic proximity interactions depend sensitively on the spin-dependent hybridization of overlapping bands and as such are likely a general feature of hybrid van der Waals structures. Here, these studies suggest routes to control specific spin and valley states in monolayer semiconductors.

Strongly Correlated Exciton-Magnetization System for Optical Spin Pumping in CrBr 3 and CrI 3 .

Ferromagnetism in van der Waals systems, preserved down to a monolayer limit, attracted attention to a class of materials with general composition CrX 3 (X=I, Br, Cl), which are treated now as canonical two-dimensional ferromagnets. Their diverse magnetic properties, such as different easy axes or varying and controllable character of in-plane or interlayer ferromagnetic coupling, make them promising candidates for spintronic, photonic, optoelectronic, and other applications. Still, significantly different magneto-optical properties between the three materials, have been presenting a challenging puzzle for researchers over the last few years. Herewith, we demonstrate that despite similar structural and magnetic configurations, the coupling between excitons and magnetization is qualitatively different in CrBr 3 and CrI 3 films. Through a combination of the optical spin pumping experiments with the state-of-the-art theory describing bound excitonic states in the presence of magnetization, we concluded that the hole-magnetization coupling has the opposite sign in CrBr 3 and CrI 3 and also between the ground and excited exciton state. Consequently, we demonstrate efficient spin pumping capabilities in CrBr 3 driven by magnetization via spin-dependent absorption and unraveled the different origins of the magnetic hysteresis in CrBr 3 and CrI 3 are unraveled
