ChatMPI: LLM-Driven MPI Code Generation for HPC Workloads

The Message Passing Interface (MPI) standard plays a crucial role in enabling scientific applications for parallel computing and is an essential component in high-performance computing (HPC). However, implementing MPI code manually—especially applying a proper domain decomposition and communication pattern—is a challenging and error-prone task. We present ChatMPI, an AI assistant for MPI parallelization of sequential C codes. In our analysis, we focus on testing six essential HPC workloads, which are based on Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms levels 1, 2, and 3 as well as sparse, stencil, and iterative operations. We analyze the process of creating ChatMPI by using the ChatHPC library. This lightweight large language model (LLM)–based infrastructure enables HPC experts to efficiently create and supervise trustworthy AI capabilities for critical HPC software tasks. We study the data required for training (fine-tuning) ChatMPI to generate parallel codes that not only use MPI syntax correctly but also apply HPC techniques to reduce memory communication and maximize performance by using proper work decomposition. With a relatively small training dataset composed of a few dozen prompts and fewer than 15 minutes of fine-tuning on one node equipped with two NVIDIA H100 GPUs, ChatMPI elevates trustworthiness for MPI code generation of current LLMs (e.g., Code Llama, ChatGPT-4o and ChatGPT 5). Additionally, we evaluate the performance of the MPI codes generated by ChatMPI in comparison with the ones generated by ChatGPT-4o and ChatGPT-5. The codes generated by ChatMPI provide up to a 4 × boost in performance by using better problem decomposition, communication patterns, and HPC techniques (e.g., communication avoiding).

Status of SPCA-ANL Software Development, Software Quality Assurance, and Application (FY2025)

SPCA-ANL is a simulation tool used to perform deterministic analyses of sodium spray and pool fires. Development of the SPCA-II (Spray Pool Combustion Analysis) code began in the mid- 1980s as part of the Clinch River Breeder Reactor (CRBR) Project. At that time, development of SPCA-II, which was led by Rockwell International, was focused on treatment of large-scale sodium spray, stream, and pool fires that were anticipated to be prototypic of the steam generator building cells in CRBR. Under more recent DOE NE programmatic activities, the SPCA-II code was recovered from existing literature and underwent minor modifications to generate a stable executable. This recovered version of the code was not formally released. As part of the Versatile Test Reactor (VTR) Project in the 2010s, the SPCA-II code underwent key modifications to improve stability, address modeling deficiencies, improve consistency between the code manual and software, and address numerous bugs. At this point, SPCA-II was renamed SPCA-ANL. Given that SPCA-II served as the original basis for SPCA-ANL, both codes share an integrated history. Following termination of the VTR Project, the DOE NE Fast Reactor Program resumed support of the software with the goal of building and maintaining software infrastructure that can enable commercial-grade dedication of SPCA-ANL by an end user. Version 1.0, the first external release of SPCA-ANL, was generated in June 2024. This report summarizes the development and maintenance activities completed for SPCAANL in FY2025. This year’s work was focused on improving quality and usability of the code. The provisional Software Quality Assurance (SQA) program has been established and was used to test the procedures for infrastructure improvements, code development, bug fixes, and code releases, as described in the following sections of this report. A code Version 1.0.1 was released in FY25, as described in Chapter 4.

Natural Language Processing-Enhanced Nuclear Industry Operating Experience Data Analysis: Aggregation and Interpretation of Multi-Report Analysis Results

Industry-wide operating experience is a critical source of raw data for reliability and risk model parameter estimations for nuclear power plants. A large portion of operating experience data are failure events stored as reports that contain unstructured data, such as narratives. In current practice, a failure report is usually reviewed and manually coded by analysts. The coding is based on extracting several event characteristics such as system name, component type, sub-part type, failure mode, and failure cause. Event narratives are mostly used to help understand events and extract their characteristics. In this line of research, we aim to maximize the usage of event narratives by leveraging natural language processing (NLP) methods to automatically convert an event narrative to a causal graph. This research has promise to improve physical understanding of failure initiation and propagation and to facilitate use of non-failure data (e.g., near-misses and degradations) to complement the limited data pool of failures. In our previous work, we developed an NLP tool and applied it to analyze a number of licensee event reports submitted by U.S. nuclear power plants to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In this paper, we will report our recent research progress in aggregating the results of multiple reports, developing network model(s), and drawing statistical insights.

PDQ Users Manual. Manual Version 2, for PDQ Code Version 1.20

PDQ is a tool for the management of the input and execution of batch jobs for simulation codes that use a text based input system. It accomplishes this goal by operating at two levels. First, it takes input file templates (commonly known at LANL as input deck templates) and creates multiple instantiations by performing substitutions of data from table files into symbols (variables) found in the template. Second, it provides commands to submit the created files to the SLURM batch system for execution. These two activities taken together produce a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts and provides an elegant way of executing studies across multiple similar simulations while minimizing the risk of typographical errors in the input files. PDQ was originally developed as a job management system called XVS by Jeff McAninch while he was at LANL. Besides the capabilities described here, XVS had many other features specific for interactions with particular simulation codes. After Jeff’s departure, maintenance of XVS was taken over by Rendell Carver; he added some new features as well as kept it functioning as the batch system at LANL was changed from LSF to MOAB to SLURM. In 2017, Rob Pelak decided to develop a different version that removed the additional features (many of which were rendered obsolete with the retirement of the simulation code or batch system that they supported) and produced a cleaner “bare bones” version of XVS. A few other behaviors of XVS that Rob found irksome were altered. Rob gave the resulting code a new name: PDQ. In 2022 Danielle McDermott developed a version that runs under Python 3.X. As suggested by Rob, she used the python2to3 utility to identify most changes. Given that PDQ continues to operate with Python version 2.7 we have advanced the version number to 1.20.

Data Visualization: Augmented Reality

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in developing new technologies for automated characterization and visualization of condition monitoring data. Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that is being developed to improve such data visualization. Augmented reality has been defined as a technology that merges virtual and physical components in real-time, and in three dimensions. Wearable, commercially-available AR devices allow onsite engineers and technicians to perform inspection tasks with significantly more available information such as comparisons of past and present sensor and imager data, onsite data analysis and result displays, and various forms of metadata including technical drawings, previous inspection reports and maintenance histories, operation manuals, codes and standards, and holograms representing data analysis results superimposed onto the in situ monitored system.

Status of SAS4A/SASSYS-1 Software Development and Application (FY2024)

SAS4A/SASSYS-1 is a simulation tool used to perform deterministic analysis of anticipated events as well as design basis and beyond design basis accidents for advanced liquid-metal-cooled nuclear reactors. With its origin as SAS1A in the late 1960s, the SAS series of codes has been under continuous use and development for over fifty years. It has been identified as a critical element of safety analysis capabilities for the U.S. Department of Energy and is utilized within industry to perform the transient safety analyses required to support the licensing of Liquid Metal-cooled Fast Reactors (LMFRs). This report summarizes the code development and update activities carried out during FY2024. In FY2024, programmatic activities focused on key improvements to software useability, such as enhanced user interfaces for reactivity feedback modeling, improvements in stability/useability of the Code Manual, and improvements to the acceptance testing infrastructure, including automation of acceptance testing and generation of the Acceptance Testing Report. To support end user applications, an open training was held, a semi-public forum was maintained, and a practical benchmarking and validation matrix was developed which allowed limitations of existing testing capabilities to be assessed. The existing fuel models were also enhanced with improved modeling capabilities and testing for the oxide and annular fuel models.

Development and Implementation of a New AI-Based Tool to Support Fast Reactor Software Model Generation and Validation

This report summarizes FY26 work to develop Maggie, an artificial intelligence-based assistant designed to support software model generation and validation activities for fast reactor analysis codes. The project established a modular, code-agnostic software architecture that separates reusable agent capabilities from code-specific knowledge and tools, with initial implementation focused on the FRP-supported fast reactor safety analysis code SAS4A/SASSYS1 (SAS). A curated SAS-specific knowledge base was assembled from the code manual, training materials, historical analysis reports, and representative input files, and was integrated through retrieval-augmented generation to ground Maggie’s responses in authoritative sources. Maggie was deployed on the internal Argonne network, where it demonstrated practical user-facing capability as a chatbot for answering natural language questions about SAS and retrieving relevant technical information. Demonstration cases also showed that Maggie can generate useful snippets of SAS input for selected modeling tasks, while highlighting current limitations in reliability and consistency for more complex input generation tasks. Overall, the FY26 effort established the technical foundation for an AI-assisted capability intended to improve the efficiency, consistency, and accessibility of fast reactor software model development at Argonne and, with further improvements, to support eventual use by the broader fast reactor community, including industry users of FRP-supported analysis tools.

ITS Version 6.7: The Integrated TIGER Series of Coupled Electron/Photon Monte Carlo Transport Codes User's Manual

ITS is a powerful software package permitting state-of-the-art Monte Carlo solution of linear time-independent coupled electron/photon radiation transport problems, with or without the presence of macroscopic electric and magnetic fields of arbitrary spatial dependence. Our goal has been to simultaneously maximize operational simplicity and physical accuracy. Through a set of preprocessor directives, the user selects one of the many ITS codes. The ease with which the make system is applied combines with an input scheme based on order-independent descriptive keywords that makes maximum use of defaults and internal error checking to provide experimentalists and theorists alike with a method for the routine but rigorous solution of sophisticated radiation transport problems. Physical rigor is provided by employing accurate cross sections, sampling distributions, and physical models for describing the production and transport of the electron/photon cascade from 1.0 GeV down to 1.0 keV. The availability of source code permits the more sophisticated user to tailor the codes to specific applications and to extend the capabilities of the codes to more complex applications. Version 6, the latest version of ITS, contains (1) improvements to the ITS 5.0 codes, and (2) conversion to Fortran 95. The general user friendliness of the software has been enhanced through memory allocation to reduce the need for users to modify and recompile the code.

Theory and User Manual for the Thermal Hydraulic Code SE2-ANL

A theory and user manual of thermal hydraulic code SE2-ANL was prepared in this work, to resolve the missing documentation. SE2-ANL, a special version of SUPERENERGY-2, is a multi-assembly steady-state Liquid Metal Reactor (LMR) core thermal hydraulic analysis code, and it was developed in the 1980s, but no complete documentation was ever made. This report describes the detailed methodology of the temperature calculation, inherited from (original) SUPERENERGY-2, and fuel and cladding temperature calculation capabilities as well as many other features which were incorporated in SE2-ANL. The input and output of SE2-ANL are also demonstrated in detail, using some simple models. The orificing zone capability as well as some other useful features of SE2-ANL are discussed.
