K 2 CoS 2 : A two-dimensional in-plane antiferromagnetic insulator

Recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials has brought magnetism to the flatland and opened up exciting opportunities for the exploration of fundamental physics as well as novel device applications. Here, we predict a thermodynamically stable 2D magnetic material, ${\mathrm{K}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoS}}_{2}$, which retains its in-plane bulk antiferromagnetic (AFM) order down to the monolayer and bilayer limits. Magnetic moments $(2.5{{\mu}}_{B}/\mathrm{Co})$ are found to form a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetically ordered chain of Co atoms. The nonmagnetic electronic spectrum of the monolayer film is found to host flatbands and van Hove singularities, which play a key role in stabilizing the magnetic ground state. Based on classical Monte Carlo simulations, we estimate the Neel temperature for the AFM monolayer to be ${\approx}15\mathrm{K}$. Our study demonstrates that ${\mathrm{K}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoS}}_{2}$ hosts a robust AFM state which persists from the monolayer limit to the bulk material.

Conceptual Design of A 20 T Dipole Based on Hybrid REBCO/Nb 3 Sn Cos-theta Coil

This paper presents a design concept of an HTS/LTS hybrid dipole with 50 mm aperture and 20 T nominal field based on a cos-theta coil and a cold iron yoke. The HTS part of magnet coil uses REBCO Twisted Stacked Tape cable. The LTS part is graded and made of two Nb3Sn Rutherford cables. Due to high sensitivity of HTS/LTS coils to large stresses and strains at high fields, a Stress Management (SM) concept combined with the cos-theta coil geometry is used. The results of magnet magnetic analysis are presented and discussed.

20 T Dipole Magnet Based on Hybrid HTS/LTS Cos-Theta Coils with Stress Management

This paper presents the design concept of the dipole magnet with 50 mm aperture, 20 T nominal field and 13% margin based on a six-layer cos-theta (CT) hybrid coil design. Due to the high stresses and strains in the coil at high field, Stress Management (SM) elements are implemented in the CT coil geometry. The results of magnet magnetic analysis are presented and discussed. The key parameters of this design are compared with the parameters of similar magnets based on block-type and canted cos-theta coils.

Effect of strain rate on the deformation of hollow CoS nanoboxes and doubly porous self-assembled films

Nanomaterials with multiscale porosity are attractive as lightweight structural materials because unique deformation mechanisms can be programmed at different length scales. Here, we explore this concept by investigating the mechanics of hollow nanoboxes, as well as films self-assembled from nanoboxes. Hollow CoS nanoboxes with lengths of 900 nm and <30 nm wall thickness are synthesized using colloidal methods. Individual nanoboxes are compressed inside a scanning electron microscope at strain rates of 0.001 s –1 , 0.01 s –1 , and 0.1 s –1 . Nanoboxes are found to have a first peak stress of 15 MPa and loading modulus of ~240 MPa regardless of strain rate. The nanoboxes deform through ductile, plastic bending of side walls at 0.001 s –1 strain rate, while brittle fracture occurs at the higher strain rates. Self-assembly of these nanoboxes results in films with relative density of <0.1. Nanoindentation shows strain rate independent behavior with average modulus and hardness of ~15 MPa and ~230 kPa, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanical behavior of the film is compared to that of the nanobox building blocks, cellular foams and granular materials.

Mitigation of the internal p-n junction in CoS 2 -contacted FeS 2 single crystals: Accessing bulk semiconducting transport

Pyrite FeS 2 is an outstanding candidate for a low-cost, nontoxic, sustainable photovoltaic material, but efficient pyrite-based solar cells are yet to materialize. Recent studies of single crystals have shed much light on this by uncovering a p-type surface inversion layer on n-type (S-vacancy doped) crystals, and the resulting internal p-n junction. This leaky internal junction likely plays a key role in limiting efficiency in pyrite-based photovoltaic devices, also obscuring the true bulk semiconducting transport properties of pyrite crystals. Here, we demonstrate complete mitigation of the internal p-n junction in FeS 2 crystals by fabricating metallic CoS 2 contacts via a process that simultaneously diffuses Co (a shallow donor) into the crystal, the resulting heavy n doping yielding direct Ohmic contact to the interior. Low-temperature bulk transport studies of controllably Co- and S-vacancy doped semiconducting crystals then enable a host of previously inaccessible observations and measurements, including determination of donor activation energies (which are as low as 5 meV for Co), observation of an unexpected second activated transport regime, realization of electron mobility up to 2100 cm 2 V –1 s –1 , elucidation of very different mobilities in Co- and S-vacancy-doped cases, and observation of an abrupt temperaturedependent crossover to bulk Efros-Shklovskii variable-range hopping, accompanied by an unusual form of nonlinear Hall effect. Aspects of the results are interpreted with the aid of first-principles electronic structure calculations on both Co- and S-vacancy-doped FeS 2 . Furthermore, this work thus demonstrates unequivocal mitigation of the internal p-n junction in pyrite single crystals, with important implications for both future fundamental studies and photovoltaic devices

Magneto-Mechanical Optimization of Cross-Sections for $ \text{cos}(\theta)$Accelerator Magnets

The cross-section design of cos (θ) superconducting magnets is historically developed in a two-step process: initially, the coil geometry is defined on the basis of magnetic optimizations; then, the structure is designed around the coil. The first step searches for the best coil cross-section maximizing the magnetic field, margin, field quality and conductor efficiency. The latter step aims at limiting the coil stresses and deformations. However, the coil design, defined with the initial magnetic optimization, can influence the mechanical behaviour of the magnet, altering, for example, the peak stress during operation. As the critical current is a function of the applied strain, the mechanical implications of the coil cross-section design can limit the achievable performance. In this paper we propose an integrated optimization process that targets the peak stress on the conductor in addition to the magnetic objectives. Here the results are presented for a sample high-field Nb 3 Sn dipole: a 4-layer design aiming at ultimate conductor performance.

Design and Assembly of a Large-Aperture Nb 3 Sn Cos-Theta Dipole Coil With Stress Management in Dipole Mirror Configuration

The stress-management cos-theta (SMCT) coil is a new concept which has been proposed and is being developed at Fermilab in the framework of US Magnet Development Program (US-MDP) for high-field and/or large-aperture accelerator magnets based on low-temperature and high-temperature superconductors. The SMCT structure is used to reduce large coil deformations under the Lorentz forces and, thus, the excessively large strains and stresses in the coil. A large-aperture Nb 3 Sn SMCT dipole coil has been developed and fabricated at Fermilab to demonstrate and test the SMCT concept including coil design, fabrication technology and performance. The first SMCT coil has been assembled with 60-mm aperture Nb 3 Sn coil inside a dipole mirror configuration and will be tested separately and in series with the insert coil. Here this paper summarizes the large-aperture SMCT coil design and parameters and reports the coil fabrication steps and its assembly in dipole mirror configuration.

Conceptual Structural Design and Analysis of a 20 T Hybrid Cos Dipole for Future Particle Colliders

Here, to reach high collision energy for future high-energy particle colliders, like the Future Circular Collider (FCC) or the Muon Collider, it is required to achieve high field strength of the bending dipoles. Currently, the practical limit for Nb$_{\text{3}}$ Sn technology is around 16 T and, in order to further increase the magnetic field, the superconducting magnet community is considering High Temperature Superconductors (HTS), in particular Bi-2212 and REBCO conductors. However, their relevant higher cost has led the community to consider a hybrid approach where HTS materials are used in the high field region of the coils with so-called insert coils, and Low Temperature Superconductors are involved in the lower field part ($< $ 16 T) with so-called outsert coils. This paper describes the conceptual mechanical design of a 20 T hybrid cos$\theta$ dipole configuration. The high stress levels that the structure is facing due to the high magnetic field are discussed. Moreover, it presents the results of the optimization analysis of the shell-based support structure based on the key-and-bladder technology that provides the azimuthal pre-stress during room temperature assembly and cooldown to cryogenic temperatures. The aim of this work is to present a feasible design that satisfies the stress requirements.

Fabrication and Test of C3a: A Six-Layer Subscale Canted $\cos \theta$ Dipole Magnet Using High-Temperature Superconducting corc Wires

REBCO coated conductors have a strong potential for high-field magnet applications. The REBCO technology, however, is still in its infancy for accelerator magnet applications. As part of the U.S. Magnet Development Program (MDP), we developed a six-layer canted cos θ dipole magnet, C3a, using CORC® wires developed by Advanced Conductor Technologies LLC. All the layers were wound using a semi-automated winding machine. Three layers of the magnet used CORC® wires containing the SuperPower “AP” REBCO tapes and the remaining layers used the wires containing the “HM” tapes. At 77 K, both kinds of CORC® wires showed 5% to 10% degradation, after bending to a minimum bend radius of 30 or 35 mm, with respect to the self-field critical current measured before winding. At 4.2 K, the magnet reached 9.5 kA at a ramp rate of 9 A s -1 and generated a dipole field of 1.4 T. Further, the critical current of one layer degraded by 4% after a current transient up to 10.5 kA ramped in an averaged rate of 175 kA s -1 or 20 T s -1 . We confirmed the HM CORC® wire can carry a higher current than the AP CORC® wire at 4.2 K. The test results of the C3a magnet showed that the fabrication and assembly procedure can be used for the upcoming full-scale C3 magnet.

Development and Test of a Large Aperture $Nb_3Sn$ Cos-Theta Dipole Coil with Stress Management

An innovative stress-management (SM) concept for cos-theta (CT) coils (SMCT coil concept) has been proposed at Fermilab. A large-aperture two-layer Nb3Sn SMCT dipole coil was designed and manufactured to validate and test the SM concept including coil design, fabrication technology, and performance. The first large-aperture SMCT coil (SMCT1) was fabricated and assembled with a small-aperture Nb3Sn coil inside a dipole mirror magnet. SMCT1 coil tests in a dipole mirror structure was performed in two configurations - SMCTM1a with only powered two-layer SMCT1 coil and SMCTM1b with the SMCT coil connected in series with an inner two-layer dipole coil. The test goals are to prove the SMCT coil concept in two-layer and four-layer mirror configurations; demonstrate that the magnet can reach the targeted quench current at the established preload; study magnet training, training memory after thermal cycle, ramp rate and temperature dependences of the magnet quench current; and test the SMCT1 coil quench protection parameters. This paper summarizes the SMCT1 coil design and parameters, the coil main fabrication steps, its assembly in the dipole mirror structure. The results of the SMCTM1a/b mirror test are presented and discussed.
