Materials Data on CoI(NO)2 by Materials Project

Computed materials data using density functional theory calculations. These calculations determine the electronic structure of bulk materials by solving approximations to the Schrodinger equation. For more information, see https://materialsproject.org/docs/calculations

Bond-dependent anisotropy and magnon decay in cobalt-based Kitaev triangular antiferromagnet

Following tremendous success of the graphene-derived fundamental and applied research, the magnetic van der Waals materials that can be cleaved into monolayer two-dimensional atomic crystals have emerged as a new platform in the studies of low-dimensional physics and in the design of artificial heterostructures with novel properties. Because of that, the family of dihalides and trihalides of the 3d transition group receive a strong renewed interest. Together with our experimental collaborators, we have investigated the novel dynamical properties of one of such promising material CoI 2 , and demonstrated that spin excitations in it are prone to substantial breakdown and complex level repulsion, the important quantum effects whose theoretical understanding has been significantly advanced by our group in the last two decades. Both phenomena are dramatically revealed by experiments and verified by the theory in our joint study, published in Nature Physics. Altogether, our results pave the way toward a new research direction for the magnetic van der Waals materials.

First report of barley root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne naasi from turfgrass in Idaho, with multigene molecular characterization

Barley root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne naasi Franklin, 1965, is one of the most important pest nematodes infecting monocots (Franklin, 1965). Two-inch core soil samples collected from a golf course in Ada County, Idaho were submitted for identification in November of 2019. A high number of Meloidogyne sp. juveniles were recovered from both soil samples using sieving and decantation followed by the sugar centrifugal flotation method. They were examined by light microscopy, morphometric measurements, and multiple molecular markers, including the ribosomal 28S D2–D3 and intergenic spacer 2 (IGS-2) regions, mitochondrial markers cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and the interval from COII to 16S, and the protein-coding gene Hsp90. Morphometrics as well as BlastN comparisons with other root-knot nematode sequences from GenBank were consistent with identification as M. naasi. Phylogenetic trees inferred from 28S, IGS-2, COI, or Hsp90 alignments each separated the Idaho population into a strongly supported clade with other populations of M. naasi, while the COII-16S interval could not resolve M. naasi from M. minor. This report represents the first morphological and molecular characterization of Meloidogyne naasi from turfgrass in Idaho.

Development of Saturated Zone Three-Dimensional Initial Condition Plumes for the Composite Analysis and Cumulative Impacts Evaluation Modeling

The purpose of this environmental calculation file (ECF) is to document and present the methodology, input data, and results of extending two-dimensional (2-D) plume depictions documented in DOE/RL- 2017-66, Hanford Site Groundwater Monitoring for 2017, into three dimensions (3-D) for select contaminants of interest (COIs) in the 200-BP-5, 200-UP-1, 200-ZP-1, and 200-PO-1 Groundwater Operable Units at the Hanford Site. Plumes with sufficient available vertical profile data were interpolated in 3-D using the Leapfrog Geo®1 geologic modeling platform, which includes an interpolation engine for analyzing and visualizing 3-D data. Results of these interpolations are intended for use in developing inputs for transport modeling to support forecasts of Central Plateau contaminant plume fate and transport.

Description of Paraxiopsis kensleyi n. sp., a new axiid lobster from the Gulf of Mexico (Crustacea: Decapoda: Axiidea)

A new species of axiid was discovered during sampling offshore deep banks on the middle continental shelf off Louisiana. Paraxiopsis kensleyi n. sp. appears to inhabit interstices and cavities of coralline algal rubble, rhodoliths, coral rubble, and other eroded calcareous substrates. Weakly separated from Eutrichocheles Wood-Mason, 1876 on the basis of morphology, present assignments of western Atlantic species to Paraxiopsis de Man, 1905 are regarded as provisional. The new species is described morphologically, and the coloration of freshly captured specimens is documented and compared to related species where possible. Coloration readily distinguishes mature specimens of the new species from Paraxiopsis spinipleura Kensley, 1996, with which it was initially confused. The diagnosis includes GenBank accession numbers for COI sequences to allow future molecular phylogenetic comparisons. Compared to regional species that share a similar dentation or spination on the submedian carina, the pleon of the new species is distinctive in the truncate ventral margin on pleura 2–4, as opposed to being broadly rounded or directed ventrally in an acutely triangular tip. The new species is the eighteenth species of Paraxiopsis worldwide and the ninth from western Atlantic waters, seven of which are now known to range into the Gulf of Mexico. An updated key to western Atlantic members of the genus is provided.
