Interacting mesons as degrees of freedom in a chiral model

Here, we study the equation of state of hot and dense hadronic matter using an extended chiral mean field (CMF) model framework where the addition is the inclusion of interactions of thermally excited mesons. This is implemented by calculating the in-medium masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, obtained through the explicit chiral symmetry-breaking and vector-interaction terms in the Lagrangian, respectively, prior to applying the mean-field approximation. As a result, the in-medium meson contributions generate a feedback term to the CMF’s equations of motion, which then modifies the equation of state. With this improvement, we quantify the effect on the equation of state of strongly interacting matter through comparisons with state-of-the-art lattice QCD results and other hadronic models like the hadron resonance gas model. We find that the results of the updated hadronic CMF model with an improved meson description (mCMF) provide a better agreement with lattice-QCD data for thermodynamic state variables across a wide range of temperatures and baryon chemical potentials.

Integrable higher-spin deformations of sigma models from auxiliary fields

We construct a new infinite family of integrable deformations of the principal chiral model (PCM) parametrized by an interaction function of several variables, which extends the formalism of [C. Ferko and L. Smith, An infinite family of integrable sigma models using auxiliary fields, .] and includes deformations of the PCM by functions of both the stress tensor and higher-spin conserved currents. We show in detail that every model in this class admits a Lax representation for its equations of motion, and that the Poisson bracket of the Lax connection takes the Maillet form, establishing the existence of an infinite set of Poisson-commuting conserved charges. We argue that the non-Abelian T-dual of any model in this family is classically integrable, and that T-duality “commutes” with a general deformation in this class, in a sense which we make precise. Finally, we demonstrate that these higher-spin auxiliary field deformations can be extended to accommodate the addition of a Wess-Zumino term, and we exhibit the Lax connection in this case. T Duality and T T ¯ -like Deformations of Sigma Models

We initiate the study of the interplay between T duality and classical stress tensor deformations in two-dimensional sigma models. We first show that a general Abelian T duality commutes with the T T ¯ deformation, which can be engineered by a gravitational dressing. Then, by using an auxiliary field formulation of stress tensor deformations of the principal chiral model (PCM), we prove that non-Abelian T duality and arbitrary T T ¯ -like flows also commute for theories in this class. We argue that all such auxiliary field deformations of both the PCM and its T dual are classically integrable. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Emergence of the polydeterminant in QCD

A generalization of the determinant appears in particle physics in effective Lagrangian interaction terms that model the chiral anomaly in quantum chromodynamics (Giacosa et al. in Phys Rev D 97(9):091901, 2018, Phys Rev D 109(7):L071502, 2024), in particular in connection to mesons. This polydeterminant function, known in the mathematical literature as a mixed discriminant, associates N distinct N x N complex matrices into a complex number and reduces to the usual determinant when all matrices are taken as equal. Here, we explore the main properties of the polydeterminant applied to (quantum) fields by using a formalism and a language close to high-energy physics approaches. We discuss its use as a tool to write down novel chiral anomalous Lagrangian terms and present an explicit illustrative model for mesons. Finally, the extension of the polydeterminant as a function of tensors is shown.

Optical Activity of Chiral Excitons

Recent activity in the area of chiroptical phenomena has been focused on the connection between structural asymmetry, electron spin configuration and light/matter interactions in chiral semiconductors. In these systems, spin‐splitting phenomena emerge due to inversion symmetry breaking and the presence of extended electronic states, yet the connection to chiroptical phenomena is lacking. Here, in this study, we develop an analytical effective mass model of chiral excitons, parameterized by density functional theory. The model accounts for parity mixing of the band edge Bloch functions resulting from polar distortions, resulting in allowed magnetic dipole transitions. Through the study of a prototypical chiral 2D hybrid perovskite semiconductor, we show that circular dichroism of the chiral exciton and its interband continuum emerges from spin‐splitting via cross‐coupling of Rashba‐like and chiral/helical spin‐texture components. To demonstrate the generality of our approach, and as a counterpoint, we apply our model to describe chiroptical properties of three‐dimensionally confined excitons in perovskite nanocrystals that occur without chiral lattice distortions.

Exotic phases in finite-density ℤ 3 theories

Lattice ℤ 3 theories with complex actions share many key features with finite- density QCD including a sign problem and $\mathcal{CK}$ symmetry. Complex ℤ 3 spin and gauge models exhibit a generalized Kramers-Wannier duality mapping them onto chiral ℤ 3 spin and gauge models, which are simulatable with standard lattice methods in large regions of parameter space. The Migdal-Kadanoff real-space renormalization group (RG) preserves this duality, and we use it to compute the approximate phase diagram of both spin and gauge ℤ 3 models in dimensions one through four. Chiral ℤ 3 spin models are known to exhibit a Devil’s Flower phase structure, with inhomogeneous phases that can be thought of as ℤ 3 analogues of chiral spirals. Out of the large class of models we study, we find that only chiral spin models and their duals have a Devil’s Flower structure with an infinite set of inhomogeneous phases, a result we attribute to Elitzur’s theorem. We also find that different forms of the Migdal-Kadanoff RG produce different numbers of phases, a violation of the expectation for universal behavior from a real-space RG. We discuss extensions of our work to ℤ N models, SU(N) models and nonzero temperature.

Complex orders and chirality in the classical Kitaev-Γ model

It is well recognized that the low-energy physics of many Kitaev materials is governed by two dominant energy scales, the Ising-type Kitaev coupling 𝐾 and the symmetric off-diagonal Γ coupling. An understanding of the interplay between these two scales is therefore the natural starting point toward a quantitative description that includes subdominant perturbations that are inevitably present in real materials. This study focuses on the classical 𝐾−Γ model on the honeycomb lattice, with a specific emphasis on the region 𝐾< 0 and Γ > 0 , which is the most relevant for the available materials and which remains enigmatic in both quantum and classical limits, despite much effort. We employ large-scale Monte Carlo simulations on specially designed finite-size clusters and unravel the presence of a complex multisublattice magnetic order in a wide region of the phase diagram, whose structure is characterized in detail. We show that this order can be quantified in terms of a coarse-grained scalar-chirality order, featuring a counterrotating modulation on the two spin sublattices. Here, we also provide a comparison to previous studies and discuss the impact of quantum fluctuations on the phase diagram.

Real-space chirality from crystalline topological defects in the Kitaev spin liquid

We show that certain crystalline topological defects in the gapless Kitaev honeycomb spin liquid model generate a chirality and Majorana fermion orbital magnetization that depends in a universal manner on their emergent flux. Focusing on 5–7 dislocations as building blocks, consisting of pentagon and heptagon disclinations, we identify the Kitaev bond label configurations that preserve solvability. By computing two formulations of local markers M(r) we find that the 5 and 7 lattice defects generate a real-space contribution to Chern number and an associated Majorana fermion orbital magnetization proportional to M(r). The sign of the M(r) contribution from each 5/7 defect, i.e. its q M = ± 1 chirality, is determined by the defect Frank angle sign F and emergent gauge field flux W = ± i through the expression q M = − iFW. Remarkably, though lattice curvature and torsion can interplay with the surrounding gapless background to modify the profile of M(r), its sign q M is determined locally, implying that crystalline defects in the Kitaev spin liquid can generate a robust and observable chirality.

Leptogenesis in automatic Nelson-Barr models

In this study, we numerically show that automatic Nelson-Barr models with new chiral fermions can simultaneously solve the strong CP problem and generate the observed baryon asymmetry via high-scale leptogenesis. In these models, all CP violation arises from a single spontaneous symmetry-breaking scale, linking the origin of quark and lepton CP phases. Using conservative assumptions and minimal dynamics, we identify a viable parameter window where successful leptogenesis occurs without spoiling the quality of the strong CP solution. Models with vector-like fermions face tension within this leptogenesis scenario. A key prediction is a correlation between the baryon asymmetry and the induced QCD vacuum angle shift. Remarkably, we find that the majority of the available parameter space is within reach of current and future nucleon EDM experiments.

Topological Hall-like behavior of multidomain ferromagnets

Here, we investigate the emergence of topological Hall-like signals in disordered multidomain ferromagnets. Nonmonotonic behavior in Hall resistivity, commonly attributed to topological spin textures such as skyrmions, is produced in a random resistor network model without any chirality. It arises from simple mechanisms of the anomalous Hall effect in combination with the domain wall scattering. By varying domain configurations and domain wall resistances, we explore the conditions under which the nonmonotonic resistivity can be enhanced. Our results emphasize the need for careful analysis in distinguishing between true topological Hall effects and artifacts caused by domain disorders.

Quantum simulation of massive Thirring and Gross--Neveu models for arbitrary number of flavors

The study of fermionic quantum field theories is an important problem for realizing the standard model of particle physics on a quantum computer. As a step towards this goal, we consider the massive Thirring and Gross--Neveu models with arbitrary number of fermion flavors, $N_f$, discretized on a spatial one-dimensional lattice of size $L$ in the Hamiltonian formulation. We compute the gate complexity using the higher-order product formula and using block-encoding/qubitization and quantum singular value transformations in the limit of large $N_f$ and $L$. We also prepare the ground states of both models with excellent fidelity for system sizes up to 20 qubits with $N_f = 1,2,3,4$ using the adaptive-variational quantum imaginary time algorithm. In addition, we also classify the dynamical Lie algebras of these relativistic fermionic models and show that they belong to the same isomorphism class. Our work is a concrete step towards the quantum simulation of real-time dynamics of large $N_f$ fermionic quantum field theories models relevant for chiral symmetry breaking, understanding dimensional transmutation, and exploring the conformal window of field theories on near-term and early fault-tolerant quantum computers.

From chiral effective field theory to perturbative QCD: A Bayesian model mixing approach to symmetric nuclear matter

Constraining the equation of state (EOS) of strongly interacting, dense matter is the focus of intense experimental, observational, and theoretical effort. Chiral effective field theory (𝜒⁢EFT ) can describe the EOS between the typical densities of nuclei and those in the outer cores of neutron stars, while perturbative QCD (pQCD) can be applied to properties of deconfined quark matter, both with quantified theoretical uncertainties. However, describing the full range of densities in between with a single EOS that has well-quantified uncertainties is a challenging problem. Bayesian multimodel inference from 𝜒⁢EFT and pQCD can help bridge the gap between the two theories. In this work, we introduce a correlated Bayesian model mixing framework that uses a Gaussian process (GP) to assimilate different information into a single QCD EOS for symmetric nuclear matter. The present implementation uses a stationary GP to infer this mixed EOS solely from the EOSs of 𝜒⁢EFT and pQCD while accounting for the truncation errors of each theory. The GP is trained on the pressure as a function of number density in the low- and high-density regions where 𝜒⁢EFT and pQCD are, respectively, valid. We impose priors on the GP kernel hyperparameters to suppress unphysical correlations between these regimes. This, together with the assumption of stationarity, results in smooth 𝜒⁢EFT-to-pQCD curves for both the pressure and the speed of sound. We show that using uncorrelated mixing requires uncontrolled extrapolation of at least one of 𝜒⁢EFT or pQCD into regions where the perturbative series breaks down and leads to an acausal EOS. Here, we also discuss extensions of this framework to nonstationary and less differentiable GP kernels, its future application to neutron-star matter, and the incorporation of additional constraints from nuclear theory, experiment, and multimessenger astronomy.

Warm Inflation with the Standard Model

We show for the first time that warm inflation is feasible with standard model (SM) gauge interactions alone. Our model consists of a minimal extension of the SM by a single scalar inflaton field with an axionlike coupling to gluons and a monomial potential. The effects of light fermions, which were previously argued to render warm inflation with the SM impossible, are alleviated by Hubble dilution of their chiral chemical potentials. Our model features only one adjustable combination of parameters and accommodates all inflationary observables. We briefly discuss implications for axion experiments, dark matter, and the strong 𝐶⁢𝑃 problem.

New physics in multi-lepton tau decays

Dark particles with lepton-flavor-violating couplings to the tau lepton can induce rare neutrinoless $τ$ decays with large final state multiplicities. We study models where transitions of the type $τ^\pm\to \ell^\pm\,ϕ$, with $ϕ$ a light new particle, initiate a chain of decays in the dark sector that terminate with decays into electrons, muons, or pions. These decay cascades appear as rare five or even seven-body $τ$ decays with multiple reconstructable resonances. We survey several representative models: kinetically mixed dark photon, gauged $L_i-L_j$ models, and other more exotic charge assignments such as chiral $U(1)'$ extensions of the Standard Model. The main new ingredient is the possibility of flavor violation at very high scales. In these models, a number of channels that have not yet been searched for experimentally, such as $τ\to 5μ$, $τ\to 3μ\,2e$, $τ\to μ\,4e$, and hadronic channels like $τ\to μ\,4π$, typically dominate over the previously-considered signatures such as $τ\to 3μ$. While some of the models, such as the gauged $L_i-L_j$ ones, also contain more challenging channels with missing energy due to decays to neutrinos, they can still be searched for via fully visible channels.

Tensor-polarized parton density in the $N → Δ$ transition

The generalized parton distributions for transitions between baryon states with different masses have a forward limit in which they behave as parton densities (light-front momentum transfer Δ + , Δ T = 0, energy transfer Δ - ≠ 0). These "transition parton densities" can realize spin/isospin quantum numbers not accessible in the ground-state nucleon. The N → Δ transition gives rise to a new parton density proportional to the 1/2 → 3/2 spin transition tensor. Its properties are derived, and its magnitude is estimated in the chiral quark-soliton model based on the large-N c limit of QCD.

Exploring the role of 𝑑* hexaquarks on quark deconfinement and hybrid stars

We investigate the impact of the d*( 2380) hexaquark on the equation of state (EOS) of dense matter within hybrid stars (HSs) using the chiral mean-field model (CMF). The hexaquark is included as a new degree of freedom in the hadronic phase, and its influence on the deconfinement transition to quark matter is explored. We reparametrize the CMF model to ensure compatibility with recent astrophysical constraints, including the observation of massive pulsars and gravitational wave events. Our results show that the presence of d* significantly modifies the EOS, leading to a softening at high densities and a consequent reduction in the predicted maximum stellar masses. Furthermore, we examine the possibility of a first-order deconfinement phase transition within the context of the extended stability branch of slow stable HSs (SSHSs). We find that the presence of hexaquarks can delay the deconfinement phase transition and reduce the associated energy density gap, affecting the structure and stability of HSs. Our results suggest that, as the hexaquark appearance tends to destabilize stellar configurations, fine-tuning of model parameters is required to obtain both the presence of hexaquarks and quark deconfinement in these systems. In this scenario, the SSHS branch plays a crucial role in obtaining HSs with hexaquarks that satisfy current astrophysical constraints. Our work provides new insights into the role of exotic particles like d* in dense matter and the complex interplay between hadronic and quark degrees of freedom inside compact stellar objects.

Observation of Chiral Magnon Band Splitting in Altermagnetic Hematite

Altermagnets, a new frontier for spintronics, represent a distinct magnet class with nonrelativisticsplitting of both electronic and chiral magnon bands, yet experimental verification of their unique magnondynamics remains scarce. In this Letter, inelastic neutron scattering experiments on α-Fe 2 O 3 reveal a clearmagnon band splitting about 3 meV at ∼100 meV. Here, we trace the origin of this splitting to the alternatingexchange interactions between the 13th nearest neighbors, as supported by first-principles calculations, andconfirm that the magnons have chiral splits by theoretical modeling. This definitive characterization ofchiral magnons in hematite provides the fundamental insight needed to design and control spin transport innovel spintronic applications.
