Tensor renormalization group study of 3D principal chiral model

We study the three-dimensional SU(2) principal chiral model using different tensor renormalization group methods based on the triad and anisotropic decomposition of the tensor. The tensor network representation is formulated based on the character expansion of the Boltzmann weight. We compare the average action obtained using these two tensor network algorithms and confirm that the resulting critical coupling and exponent are comparable with the recent estimations from the Monte Carlo methods.

S U ( 2 ) principal chiral model with tensor renormalization group on a cubic lattice

We study the continuous phase transition and thermodynamic observables in the three-dimensional Euclidean S U ( 2 ) principal chiral field model with the triad tensor renormalization group and the anisotropic tensor renormalization group methods. Using these methods, we find results that are consistent with previous Monte Carlo estimates and the predicted renormalization group scaling of the magnetization close to criticality. These results bring us one step closer to studying finite-density quantum chromodynamics in four dimensions using tensor network methods. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Interacting mesons as degrees of freedom in a chiral model

Here, we study the equation of state of hot and dense hadronic matter using an extended chiral mean field (CMF) model framework where the addition is the inclusion of interactions of thermally excited mesons. This is implemented by calculating the in-medium masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, obtained through the explicit chiral symmetry-breaking and vector-interaction terms in the Lagrangian, respectively, prior to applying the mean-field approximation. As a result, the in-medium meson contributions generate a feedback term to the CMF’s equations of motion, which then modifies the equation of state. With this improvement, we quantify the effect on the equation of state of strongly interacting matter through comparisons with state-of-the-art lattice QCD results and other hadronic models like the hadron resonance gas model. We find that the results of the updated hadronic CMF model with an improved meson description (mCMF) provide a better agreement with lattice-QCD data for thermodynamic state variables across a wide range of temperatures and baryon chemical potentials.

Spin Polarizations in a Covariant Angular-Momentum-Conserved Chiral Transport Model

Using a covariant and angular-momentum-conserved chiral transport model, which takes into account the spin-orbit interactions of chiral fermions in their scatterings via the side jumps, we study the quark spin polarization in quark matter. For a system of rotating and unpolarized massless quarks in an expanding box, we find that side jumps can dynamically polarize the quark spin and result in a final quark spin polarization consistent with that of thermally equilibrated massless quarks in a self-consistent vorticity field. Further, for the quark matter produced in noncentral relativistic heavy ion collisions, we find that in the medium rest frame both the quark local spin polarizations in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane and along the longitudinal beam direction show an azimuthal angle dependence in the transverse plane similar to those observed in experiments for the Lambda hyperon.

Critical behavior in a chiral molecular model

Understanding the condensed-phase behavior of chiral molecules is important in biology as well as in a range of technological applications, such as the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. Here, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study a chiral four-site molecular model that exhibits a second-order symmetry-breaking phase transition from a supercritical racemic liquid into subcritical D-rich and L-rich liquids. We determine the infinite-size critical temperature using the fourth-order Binder cumulant, and we show that the finite-size scaling behavior of the order parameter is compatible with the 3D Ising universality class. We also study the spontaneous D-rich to L-rich transition at a slightly subcritical temperature of T = 0.985Tc, and our findings indicate that the free energy barrier for this transformation increases with system size as N2/3, where N is the number of molecules, consistent with a surface-dominated phenomenon. The critical behavior observed herein suggests a mechanism for chirality selection in which a liquid of chiral molecules spontaneously forms a phase enriched in one of the two enantiomers as the temperature is lowered below the critical point. Furthermore, the increasing free energy barrier with system size indicates that fluctuations between the L-rich and D-rich phases are suppressed as the size of the system increases, trapping it in one of the two enantiomerically enriched phases. Such a process could provide the basis for an alternative explanation for the origin of biological homochirality. We also conjecture the possibility of observing nucleation at subcritical temperatures under the action of a suitable chiral external field.

Updated analyses of gluon distribution functions for the pion and kaon from the gauge-invariant nonlocal chiral quark model

In this work, we investigate the gluon distribution functions for the pion and kaon, in addition to the improved result of the valence-quark ones, in the gauge-invariant nonlocal chiral-quark model, in which the momentum dependence of the quark interactions is properly taken into account. We then analyze the gluon distribution functions, generated dynamically through the splitting functions in the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi QCD evolution. By comparing with the recent lattice QCD results and Jefferson Lab angular momentum global analyses, it is found that the present numerical results for the gluon parton distribution functions for the pion exhibit a good agreement and the valence up-quark distribution results for the pion by reproducing the reanalyzed experimental data with a remarkable agreement. Our prediction on the gluon distribution functions for the kaon is also consistent with the recent lattice data for the kaon within the errors. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

New structural model of a chiral cubic liquid crystalline phase

A new model of a chiral cubic phase is proposed, in which the continuous lattice is embedded on a WP minimal primitive surface and chirality is related to the alternating inclination of molecules in the neighbouring segments of non-flat hexagons.

Integrable higher-spin deformations of sigma models from auxiliary fields

We construct a new infinite family of integrable deformations of the principal chiral model (PCM) parametrized by an interaction function of several variables, which extends the formalism of [C. Ferko and L. Smith, An infinite family of integrable sigma models using auxiliary fields, .] and includes deformations of the PCM by functions of both the stress tensor and higher-spin conserved currents. We show in detail that every model in this class admits a Lax representation for its equations of motion, and that the Poisson bracket of the Lax connection takes the Maillet form, establishing the existence of an infinite set of Poisson-commuting conserved charges. We argue that the non-Abelian T-dual of any model in this family is classically integrable, and that T-duality “commutes” with a general deformation in this class, in a sense which we make precise. Finally, we demonstrate that these higher-spin auxiliary field deformations can be extended to accommodate the addition of a Wess-Zumino term, and we exhibit the Lax connection in this case. Classical integrability of root-$T\overline{T}$ flows

The root-$T\overline{T}$ flow was recently introduced as a universal and classically marginal deformation of any two-dimensional translation-invariant field theory. The flow commutes with the (irrelevant) $T\overline{T}$ flow, and it can be integrated explicitly for a large class of actions, leading to nonanalytic Lagrangians reminiscent of the four-dimensional modified-Maxwell theory (ModMax). It is not a priori obvious whether the root-$T\overline{T}$ flow preserves integrability, as is the case for the $T\overline{T}$ flow. In this paper we demonstrate that this is the case for a large class of classical models by explicitly constructing a deformed Lax connection. We discuss the principal chiral model and the nonlinear sigma models on symmetric and semisymmetric spaces, without or with the Wess-Zumino term. We also construct Lax connections for the two-parameter families of theories deformed by both root-$T\overline{T}$ and $T\overline{T}$ for all of these models.

Ligand-Induced Size-Dependent Circular Dichroism in Quantum Dots

Recent experiments have probed the chiral properties of semiconductor nanocrystal (NC) quantum dots (QDs), but understanding the circular dichroism line shape, excitonic features, and chirality induction mechanism remains a challenge. We propose an atomistic pseudopotential method to model chiral ligand passivated QDs, computing circular dichroism (CD) spectra for CdSe QDs (2.6-3.8 nm). We find strong agreement between calculated and measured line shapes, predicting consistent bisignate line shapes with decreasing CD magnitude as size increases. Further, our analysis reveals the origin of bisignate line shapes, arising from nondegenerate excitons with opposing angular momenta. We also explore the impact of chiral ligand orientation on QD surfaces, observing changes in the optical activity magnitude and sign. This orientation sensitivity offers the means to distinguish ordered from disordered ligand configurations, facilitating the study of order-disorder transitions at ligand-QD interfaces.

Bethe Ansatz solutions for certain Periodic Quantum Circuits

I derived Bethe Ansatz equations for two model Periodic Quantum Circuits: (1) XXZ model; (2) Chiral Hubbard Model. I obtained explicit expressions for the spectra of the strings of any length. These analytic results may be useful for calibration and error mitigations in modern engineered quantum platforms.

Plasmons in two-dimensional topological insulators

Here, we analyze collective excitations in models of two-dimensional topological insulators using the random phase approximation. In a two-dimensional extension of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, edge plasmonic excitations with induced charge-density distributions localized at the boundaries of the system are found in the topologically nontrivial phase, dispersing similarly as one-dimensional bulk plasmons in the conventional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain. For two-dimensional bulk collective modes, we reveal regimes of enhanced interband wave function correlations, leading to characteristic hardening and softening of inter- and intraband bulk plasmonic branches, respectively. In the two-dimensional Haldane Chern insulator model, chiral, unidirectional edge plasmons in nano-ribbon architectures are observed, which can be characterized by an effective Coulomb interaction cross section. Bulk collective excitations in the two-dimensional Haldane model are shown to be originated by single-particle band structure details in different topological phases.

T Duality and T T ¯ -like Deformations of Sigma Models

We initiate the study of the interplay between T duality and classical stress tensor deformations in two-dimensional sigma models. We first show that a general Abelian T duality commutes with the T T ¯ deformation, which can be engineered by a gravitational dressing. Then, by using an auxiliary field formulation of stress tensor deformations of the principal chiral model (PCM), we prove that non-Abelian T duality and arbitrary T T ¯ -like flows also commute for theories in this class. We argue that all such auxiliary field deformations of both the PCM and its T dual are classically integrable. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Infinite Family of Integrable Sigma Models Using Auxiliary Fields

We introduce a class of 2D sigma models which are parametrized by a function of one variable. In addition to the physical field g , these models include an auxiliary field v α which mediates interactions in a prescribed way. We prove that every theory in this family is classically integrable, in that it possesses an infinite set of conserved charges in involution, which can be constructed from a Lax representation for the equations of motion. This class includes the principal chiral model (PCM) and all deformations of the PCM by functions of the energy-momentum tensor. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Comparative study of He 6 β -decay based on different similarity-renormalization-group evolved chiral interactions

We report on a study of the Gamow-Teller matrix element contributing to ${}^6$He $\beta$-decay with similarity renormalization group (SRG) versions of momentum- and configuration-space two-nucleon interactions. These interactions are derived from two different formulations of chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT) -- without and with the explicit inclusion of $\Delta$-isobars. We consider evolution parameters $\Lambda_{\rm SRG}$ in the range between 1.2 and 2.0 fm$^{-1}$ and, for the $\Delta$-less case, also the unevolved (bare) interaction. The axial current contains one- and two-body terms, consistently derived at tree level (no loops) in the two distinct $\chi$EFT formulations we have adopted here. The ${}^6$He and ${}^6$Li ground-state wave functions are obtained from hyperspherical-harmonics (HH) solutions of the nuclear many-body problem. In $A\,$=$\,6$ systems, the HH method is limited at present to treat only two-body interactions and non-SRG evolved currents. Our results exhibit a significant dependence on $\Lambda_{\text{SRG}}$ of the contributions associated with two-body currents, suggesting that a consistent SRG-evolution of these is needed in order to obtain reliable estimates. We also show that the contributions from one-pion-exchange currents depend strongly on the model (chiral) interactions and on the momentum- or configuration-space cutoffs used to regularize them. These results might prove helpful in clarifying the origin of the sign difference recently found in No-Core-Shell-Model and Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the ${}^6$He Gamow-Teller matrix element.
