Finite scale theory: Predicting nature’s shocks

In this paper, we describe a continuum model that accurately reproduces the experimentally measured structure of physical shocks in a perfect gas. In this work, we begin by presenting a history of shock structure research, theoretical, experimental and numerical, to quantify the significant discrepancies between Navier–Stokes predictions and laboratory measurements. In our first main result, we discuss modifications that generalize the Chapman–Enskog approximation and lead to a new continuum model termed the Finite Scale Equations. In our second main result, we use this continuum model to calculate shock structure with results comparable in accuracy to numerical simulations based on the Boltzmann equation.

Hydrodynamic generators in relativistic kinetic theory

Here, we resum the nonequilibrium gradient corrections to a single-particle distribution function evolved by the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation (RTA). We first study a system undergoing Bjorken expansion and show that, for a constant relaxation time, the exact solution of the RTA Boltzmann equation at late times (i.e., after the decay of nonhydrodynamic modes) generates the Borel resummed Chapman-Enskog series. Extending this correspondence to systems without Bjorken symmetry, we construct a ( 3 + 1 )-dimensional hydrodynamic generator for RTA kinetic theory, which is an integral representation of the Chapman-Enskog series in the limit of vanishing nonhydrodynamic modes. Relaxing this limit, we discover at earlier times a set of nonhydrodynamic modes coupled to the RTA Chapman-Enskog expansion. Including the dynamics of these nonhydrodynamic modes is shown to control the emergence of hydrodynamics as an effective field theory description of nonequilibrium fluids, which works well even for far-off-equilibrium situations where the Knudsen number is initially large.

Relaxation time approximation for a multispecies relativistic gas

We generalize a recent prescription for the relaxation time approximation for the relativistic Boltzmann equation for systems with multiple particle species at finite temperature. This is performed by adding counter-terms to the traditional Anderson-Witting ansatz for each particle species. Our approach allows for the use of momentum-dependent relaxation times and the obedience of local conservation laws regardless of the definition of the local equilibrium state. As an application, we derive the first order Chapman-Enskog corrections to the equilibrium distribution and display results for the hadron-resonance gas. We also demonstrate that our collision term ansatz obeys the second law of thermodynamics.
