Interplay of Kondo physics with incommensurate charge density waves in CeTe 3

CeTe 3 is a 2-dimensional (2D) Van der Waals (VdW) material with incommensurate charge density waves (CDW), extremely high transition temperature (T CDW ), and a large momentum-dependent CDW gap that leaves a significant portion of the Fermi surface intact. It is also considered to be a weak Kondo system, a property unexpected for a material with incommensurate CDW, where each atomic site is slightly different. Here, we study the properties of the CDW state in several RTe3 (R is rare earth) materials and examine the hybridization of itinerant states with the localized Ce 4f multiplet in CeTe 3 by using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find that the renormalization of the itinerant states originating from the hybridization with the deeper localized 4f states at −260 meV is k−dependent and extends to the Fermi level. As these localized states are far from the Fermi level, the observed hybridization affects the effective masses only marginally and does not lead to heavy fermions. However, since the same renormalizing mechanism normally leads to the heavy fermion physics when the localized 4f states are near the Fermi level, our observation of its strong k−dependence suggests that this could be the reason for discrepancy between the heavy masses in specific heat and light ones in Shubnikov de Haas oscillations, often observed in heavy fermions.

Interplay of charge density wave states and strain at the surface of CeTe 2

in this work we use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study charge density wave (CDW) states in the rare-earth ditelluride, CeTe 2 . Our STM measurements surprisingly detect a unidirectional CDW with q ~ 0.28 a * , which differs from previous experimental and first-principles studies of the rare-earth ditellurides, and which is very close to what is found in experimental measurements of the related rare-earth tritellurides. Furthermore, in the vicinity of an extended subsurface defect, we find spatially-separated as well as spatially-coexisting unidirectional CDWs at the surface of CeTe 2 . We quantify the nanoscale strain and its variations induced by this defect, and establish a correlation between local lattice strain and the locally-established CDW states; this suggests that lattice strain plays an important role in determining the specific characteristics of the established CDW state. Our measurements probe the fundamental properties of a weakly-bound two-dimensional Te sheet, which experimental and theoretical work has previously established as the fundamental component driving much of the essential physics in both the rare-earth di- and tritelluride compounds.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of spontaneous symmetry breaking into a hidden state of charge-density wave

Abstract Nonequilibrium phase transitions play a pivotal role in broad physical contexts, from condensed matter to cosmology. Tracking the formation of nonequilibrium phases in condensed matter requires a resolution of the long-range cooperativity on ultra-short timescales. Here, we study the spontaneous transformation of a charge-density wave in CeTe 3 from a stripe order into a bi-directional state inaccessible thermodynamically but is induced by intense laser pulses. With ≈100 fs resolution coherent electron diffraction, we capture the entire course of this transformation and show self-organization that defines a nonthermal critical point, unveiling the nonequilibrium energy landscape. We discuss the generation of instabilities by a swift interaction quench that changes the system symmetry preference, and the phase ordering dynamics orchestrated over a nonadiabatic timescale to allow new order parameter fluctuations to gain long-range correlations. Remarkably, the subsequent thermalization locks the remnants of the transient order into longer-lived topological defects for more than 2 ns.

Pressure-induced suppression of charge density phases across the entire rare-earth tritellurides by optical spectroscopy

The rare-earth tritellurides (RTe 3 ) are a distinct class of 2D layered materials that recently gained significant attention due to hosting such quantum collective phenomena as superconductivity or charge density waves (CDWs). Many members of this van der Waals (vdW) family crystals exhibit CDW behavior at room temperature, i.e., RTe 3 compound where R = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Tb. Here, our systematic studies establish the CDW properties of RTe 3 when the vdW spacing/interaction strength between adjacent RTe 3 layers is engineered under extreme hydrostatic pressures. Using a non-destructive spectroscopy technique, pressure-dependent Raman studies first establish the pressure coefficients of phonon and CDW amplitude modes for a variety of RTe 3 materials, including LaTe 3 , CeTe 3 , PrTe 3 , NdTe 3 , SmTe 3 , GdTe 3 , and TbTe 3 . Results further show that the CDW phase is eventually suppressed at high pressures when the interlayer spacing is reduced and interaction strength is increased. Comparison between different RTe 3 materials shows that LaTe 3 with the largest thermodynamic equilibrium interlayer spacing (smallest chemical pressure) exhibits the most stable CDW phases at high pressures. In contrast, CDW phases in late RTe 3 systems with the largest internal chemical pressures are suppressed easily with applied pressure. Overall results provide comprehensive insights into the CDW response of the entire RTe 3 series under extreme pressures, offering an understanding of CDW formation/engineering in a unique class of vdW RTe 3 material systems.

Demonstration of Integrated PostIrradiation Process Steps forMultikilogram Amounts of Low- and High-Burnup Used Nuclear Fuels

sponsored research and development (R&D) on the advanced, closed nuclear fuel cycle, including post-irradiation processing of used fuels, recovery of separated components, and preparation of recycle nuclear fuels. During the period 2007–2010, kilogram-scale demonstrations of the integrated processing steps were performed for actual light water reactor (LWR) used nuclear fuels (UNF). These integrated processing demonstrations were called “the Coupled-End-to-End” (CETE) campaigns and were associated with the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership program, which ran concurrently. The demonstrations were carried out in the shielded hot cells and associated gloveboxes located in the Irradiated Fuels Examination Laboratory (IFEL) and the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Limited circulation program reports and a few technical papers were issued. The subject document provides a comprehensive summary of results, technical comparisons, and conclusions obtained from the demonstration campaigns and subsequent associated R&D.
