Use of steel and tantalum apparatus for molten Cd-Mg-Zn alloys

Steel and tantalum apparatus contains various ternary alloys of cadmium, zinc, and magnesium used in pyrochemical processes for the recovery of uranium-base reactor fuels. These materials exhibit good corrosion resistance at the high temperatures necessary for fuel separation in liquid metal-molten salt solvents.

Materials Data on Mg2ZnCd by Materials Project

Mg2CdZn crystallizes in the orthorhombic Immm space group. The structure is one-dimensional and consists of two Mg2CdZn ribbons oriented in the (1, 0, 0) direction. Mg is bonded in a linear geometry to one Cd and one Zn atom. The Mg–Cd bond length is 2.85 Å. The Mg–Zn bond length is 2.73 Å. Cd is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent Mg atoms. Zn is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent Mg atoms.
