CaAl2Si2O8 crystallizes in the triclinic P-1 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are two inequivalent Ca2+ sites. In the first Ca2+ site, Ca2+ is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to seven O2- atoms. There are a spread of Ca–O bond distances ranging from 2.36–2.79 Å. In the second Ca2+ site, Ca2+ is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to seven O2- atoms. There are a spread of Ca–O bond distances ranging from 2.30–2.76 Å. There are four inequivalent Al3+ sites. In the first Al3+ site, Al3+ is bonded to four O2- atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra that share corners with four SiO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.73–1.79 Å. Ca is bonded to six O atoms to form CaO6 octahedra that share corners with four SiO4 tetrahedra and edges with two AlO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Ca–O bond distances ranging from 2.38–2.52 Å. There are two inequivalent Al sites. In the first Al site, Al is bonded to four O atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra that share corners with four SiO4 tetrahedra and an edgeedge with one CaO6 octahedra. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.72–1.79 Å. In the second Al site, Al is bonded to four O atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra that share corners with four SiO4 tetrahedra and an edgeedge with one CaO6 octahedra. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.73–1.80 Å. There are four inequivalent Si sites. There are a spread of Ca–O bond distances ranging from 2.32–2.51 Å. There are two inequivalent Al sites. In the first Al site, Al is bonded to four O atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra that share corners with four SiO4 tetrahedra and an edgeedge with one CaO6 pentagonal pyramid. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.73–1.80 Å. In the second Al site, Al is bonded to four O atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra that share corners with four SiO4 tetrahedra and an edgeedge with one CaO6 pentagonal pyramid. There is two shorter (1.73 Å) and two longer (1.80 Å) Al–O bond length. There are four inequivalent Si sites. In the first Si site, Si is bonded to four O atoms to form SiO4 tetrahedra that share a cornercorner with one CaO6 pentagonal pyramid, corners with two AlO4 tetrahedra, and corners with two SiO4 tetrahedra. CaAl2(SiO5)2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmcm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Ca is bonded to six O atoms to form distorted CaO6 octahedra that share corners with four equivalent AlO6 octahedra and corners with six equivalent SiO4 tetrahedra. The corner-sharing octahedral tilt angles are 63°. There are a spread of Ca–O bond distances ranging from 2.38–2.51 Å. Al is bonded to six O atoms to form AlO6 octahedra that share corners with two equivalent CaO6 octahedra, corners with four equivalent SiO4 tetrahedra, and edges with two equivalent AlO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedral tilt angles are 63°. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.88–1.96 Å. Si is bonded to four O atoms to form SiO4 tetrahedra that share corners with three equivalent CaO6 octahedra, corners with four equivalent AlO6 octahedra, and a cornercorner with one SiO4 tetrahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 49–68°. There are a spread of Si–O bond distances ranging from 1.63–1.66 Å. There are five inequivalent O sites. In the first O site, O is bonded in a water-like geometry to two equivalent Al atoms. In the second O site, O is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one Ca atom. In the third O site, O is bonded in a distorted trigonal planar geometry to one Ca and two equivalent Si atoms.
