Earth Observing-1 Advanced Land Imager Flight Performance Assessment: Noise and Dark Current Stability During the First Year on Orbit

The noise and dark current stability of the Advanced Land Imager during the first year on orbit (November 21, 2000 - November 21, 2001) are presented. Data have been separated into short-term and long-term periods. The analysis of short-term data indicate some SWIR detectors may drift up to ten digital numbers between the pre and post dark observations of a given data collection event. Analysis of long-term data suggest the SWIR dark current has deviated by less than ten digital numbers and some SCA SWIR dark Current have increased by up to 200 digital numbers during the first year on orbit.

Earth Observing-1 Advanced Imager Flight Performance Assessment: Investigating Dark Current Stability Over One-Half Orbit Period during the First 60 Days

The stability of the EO-1 Advanced Land Imager dark current levels over the period of one-half orbit is investigated. A series of two-second dark current collections, over the course of 40 minutes, was performed during the first sixty days the instrument was in orbit. Analysis of this data indicates only two dark current reference periods, obtained entering and exiting eclipse, are required to remove ALI dark current offsets for 99.9% of the focal plane to within 1.5 digital numbers for any observation on the solar illuminated portion of the orbit.

Critical Current Stability of 2G REBCO Tape for Space-Flight HTS Leads

High reliability is an essential requirement for all spaceflight hardware. XRISM, a follow-on mission to the Hitomi x-ray observatory, also uses 2G REBCO tapes as current leads for the superconducting magnets that are a key component of the Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator (ADR) that cools the detector array. While the Hitomi Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) worked flawlessly in orbit, during its development there were indications that the critical current of its specialized REBCO tapes could degrade over time when exposed to normal-humidity air. To demonstrate that the updates to the XRISM HTS lead assemblies had mitigated this risk, a series of tests were carried out to measure the stability of Ic of dozens of samples over a period greater than the flight assemblies were exposed to air during integration and test. The test rig allowed not only the measurement of the sample Ic, but also the localization of the voltage rise as the current approached Ic. We will discuss the trends in the critical current of the samples, as well as localization of lower Ic regions.

Measurements of Breakdown Field and Forward Current Stability in 3C-SiC P-N Junction Diodes Grown on Step-Free 4H-SiC

This paper reports on initial fabrication and electrical characterization of 3C-SiC p-n junction diodes grown on step-free 4H-SiC mesas. Diodes with n-blocking-layer doping ranging from approx. 2 x 10(exp 16)/cu cm to approx.. 5 x 10(exp 17)/cu cm were fabricated and tested. No optimization of junction edge termination or ohmic contacts was employed. Room temperature reverse characteristics of the best devices show excellent low-leakage behavior, below previous 3C-SiC devices produced by other growth techniques, until the onset of a sharp breakdown knee. The resulting estimated breakdown field of 3C-SiC is at least twice the breakdown field of silicon, but is only around half the breakdown field of <0001> 4H-SiC for the doping range studied. Electric Machine with Boosted Inductance to Stabilize Current Control

High-powered motors typically have very low resistance and inductance (R and L) in their windings. This makes the pulse-width modulated (PWM) control of the current very difficult, especially when the bus voltage (V) is high. These R and L values are dictated by the motor size, torque (Kt), and back-emf (Kb) constants. These constants are in turn set by the voltage and the actuation torque-speed requirements. This problem is often addressed by placing inductive chokes within the controller. This approach is undesirable in that space is taken and heat is added to the controller. By keeping the same motor frame, reducing the wire size, and placing a correspondingly larger number of turns in each slot, the resistance, inductance, torque constant, and back-emf constant are all increased. The increased inductance aids the current control but ruins the Kt and Kb selections. If, however, a fraction of the turns is moved from their "correct slot" to an "incorrect slot," the increased R and L values are retained, but the Kt and Kb values are restored to the desired values. This approach assumes that increased resistance is acceptable to a degree. In effect, the heat allocated to the added inductance has been moved from the controller to the motor body, which in some cases is preferred.

Particle scattering and current sheet stability in the geomagnetic tail during the substorm growth phase

The particle scattering and current sheet stability features in the geomagnetic tail during the phase of substorm growth were investigated using Tsyganenko's (1989) magnetic field model. In a study of four substorm events which were observed both in the high-altitude nightside tail and in the auroral ionosphere, the model magnetic field was adjusted to each case so as to represent the global field development during the growth phase of the substorms. The model results suggest that the auroral brightenings are connected with processes taking place in the near-earth region inside about 15 earth radii. The results also suggest that there is a connection between the chaotization of the electrons and the auroral brightenings at substorm onset.

Equatorial ground ice on Mars: Steady-state stability

Current Martian equatorial surface temperatures are too warm for water ice to exist at the surface for any appreciable length of time before subliming into the atmosphere. Subsurface temperatures are generally warmer still and, despite the presence of a diffusive barrier of porous regolith material, it has been shown by Smoluchowski, Clifford and Hillel, and Fanale et al. that buried ground ice will also sublime and be lost to the atmosphere in a relatively short time. We investigate the behavior of this subliming subsurface ice and show that it is possible for ice to maintain at a steady-state depth, where sublimation and diffusive loss to the atmosphere is balanced by resupply from beneath by diffusion and recondensation of either a deeper buried ice deposits or ground water. We examine the behavior of equatorial ground ice with a numercial time-marching molecular diffusion model. In our model we allow for diffusion of water vapor through a porous regolith, variations in diffusivity and porosity with ice content, and recondensation of sublimed water vapor. A regolith containing considerable amounts of ice can still be very porous, allowing water vapor to diffuse up from deeper within the ice layer where temperatures are warmer due to the geothermal gradient. This vapor can then recondense nearer to the surface where ice had previously sublimed and been lost to the atmosphere. As a result we find that ice deposits migrate to find a steady-state depth, which represents a balance between diffusive loss to the atmosphere through the overlying porous regolith and diffusive resupply through a porous icy regolith below. This depth depends primarily on the long-term mean surface temperature and the nature of the geothermal gradient, and is independent of the ice-free porosity and the regolith diffusivity. Only the rate of loss of ground ice depends on diffusive properties.

High resolution color band pyrometer ratioing

The sensing head of a two-color band ratioing pyrometer of a known type using a fiber optic cable to couple radiation to dual detector photodiodes is improved to have high spatial resolution by focusing the radiation received through an objective lens (i.e., by focusing the image of a target area) onto an opaque sheet spaced in front of the input end of the fiber optic cable. A two-mil hole in that sheet then passes radiation to the input end of the cable. The detector has two channels, one for each color band, with an electronic-chopper stabilized current amplifier as the input stage followed by an electronic-chopper stabilized voltage amplifier.

Electrospray Thruster Performance with Microfabricated Emitter Arrays and Indium Propellant

The feasibility of a microfabricated indium-fueled electrospray thruster with excellent performance was demonstrated. High efficiency electrospray thrusters with microfabricated components are under development for very compact, distributable propulsion systems that can be employed on both very small and large spacecraft with 10X improvement over SOA in mass, volume and specific impulse The critical components of this technology are the microfabricated emitter arrays and the capillary force driven indium feed system. Grey scale electron-beam lithography patterning and reactive ion dry etching provided the required micron-scale etch precision and uniformity across an array of 400 emitters in 1 cm2. Initial tests of single microfabricated silicon emitters demonstrated better performance than industry standard single emitters and the performance required to achieve 200 micronewtons when scaled up to a thruster with 400 emitters in 1 cm2. Arrays of emitters tested in a preliminary prototype Microfluidic Electrospray Propulsion (MEP) thruster assembly demonstrated stable performance at estimated thrust levels of 5, 50, and 120 µN at extraction voltages less than 4 kV. Current stability was within 0.15 % at 120 µN with only 1.5% of the emitter current collected by the extractor electrode. Post-test inspections revealed that more than 99% of the 400 emitters were electrospraying during the test. Specific impulse was estimated to be >3100 s from measurements of total charge and consumed indium mass at an emitter voltage of 1470 V. The results of this investigation suggest that microfabricated indium electrospray thruster technology is both feasible and capable of excellent performance as a highly compact microthruster.

Integrated circuit electrometer and sweep circuitry for an atmospheric probe

The design of electrometer circuitry using an integrated circuit operational amplifier with a MOSFET input is described. Input protection against static voltages is provided by a dual ultra low leakage diode or a neon lamp. Factors affecting frequency response leakage resistance, and current stability are discussed, and methods are suggested for increasing response speed and for eliminating leakage resistance and current instabilities. Based on the above, two practical circuits, one having a linear response and the other a logarithmic response, were designed and evaluated experimentally. The design of a sweep circuit to implement mobility measurements using atmospheric probes is presented. A triangular voltage waveform is generated and shaped to contain a step in voltage from zero volts in both positive and negative directions.

Small-Signal Stability of Grid-Forming Inverters Using Current-Limiting and Frequency Stabilization

This paper presents a small-signal stability analysis of grid-forming (GFM) inverters under current-limiting conditions. It examines how adjustments in virtual impedance angles, implemented through advanced current-limiting and frequency stabilization techniques, influence small-signal stability. This paper studies a GFM inverter control integrating a fictitious power technique stabilizing primary control by adding a virtual power term and a hybrid current limiter integrating virtual impedance in the anti-wind-up feedback with current reference saturation limiting. A small-signal model is developed to assess the impact of virtual impedance angles on GFM inverter dynamics during grid disturbances, such as voltage drops. The findings indicate that although increasing the virtual impedance angle (to make it more inductive) enhances large-signal stability and voltage support during faults, it can induce oscillations and lead to instability if the angle exceeds certain thresholds. Based on the small-signal models, this paper provides design considerations for the current-limiter impedances to ensure reliable GFM inverter behavior under grid disturbances while maintaining small-signal stability.

Performance measurement of emerging 3- and 4-terminal tandem solar cells

Tandem solar cells are not limited to the conventional two-terminal (2-T) configuration. Multi-terminal designs like three-terminal (3-T) and four-terminal (4-T) devices have gained increasing attention in the PV community due to their relaxed current-matching requirement between subcells and their potential for enhanced energy yield. However, reliable and standardized methods for evaluating the performance of multi-terminal tandems remain underdeveloped. This work addresses this gap by providing comprehensive measurement guidelines tailored to these advanced configurations. We examine key coupling mechanisms between subcells, including the shared electrical load in 3-T devices and optical luminescent coupling in both 3-T and 4-T devices, to enable accurate and consistent performance evaluation. Furthermore, we propose two stabilized measurement methods for emerging 3-T tandem cells incorporating perovskite subcells: (1) a two-dimensional maximum-power-point tracking (MPPT) approach that continuously tracks both subcells' maximum power points (P MAX ) until convergence to stabilized outputs, and (2) a hybrid approach that combines MPPT for one subcell with stabilized current recording under fixed voltage biases near the P MAX of the other, allowing robust extraction of the overall stabilized P MAX (termed “MPPT + asymptotic P MA X scan” method). These methods directly address the dynamic current responses inherent to perovskite-containing tandems, providing a foundation for meaningful and reproducible performance comparisons.

Constraining the Evolution of ZZ Ceti

We report our analysis of the stability of pulsation periods in the DAV star (pulsating hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf) ZZ Ceti, also called R548. On the basis of observations that span 31 years, we conclude that the period 213.13 s observed in ZZ Ceti drifts at a rate dP/dt 5 (5.5 plus or minus 1.9) x 10(exp -15) ss(sup -1), after correcting for proper motion. Our results are consistent with previous P values for this mode and an improvement over them because of the larger time base. The characteristic stability timescale implied for the pulsation period is |P||P(raised dot)|greater than or equal to 1.2 Gyr, comparable to the theoretical cooling timescale for the star. Our current stability limit for the period 213.13 s is only slightly less than the present measurement for another DAV, G117-B15A, for the period 215.2 s, establishing this mode in ZZ Ceti as the second most stable optical clock known, comparable to atomic clocks and more stable than most pulsars. Constraining the cooling rate of ZZ Ceti aids theoretical evolutionary models and white dwarf cosmochronology. The drift rate of this clock is small enough that we can set interesting limits on reflex motion due to planetary companions.

Thermally induced PtOx interfacial layer enhances stability of Pt/β-Ga2O3 vertical Schottky diodes

This study investigates the long-term stability of Pt/β-Ga2O3 field-plated Schottky barrier diodes at high temperatures, with extended thermal cycling and soaking stress. The device characteristics reveal a strong dependence on operating temperature, leading to an ON/OFF current ratio of ∼10× at ±3 V and 600 °C. Extensive thermal cycling (25 cycles over 100 h) between room temperature and 350 °C shows that leakage currents stabilize after the initial ten cycles. This stabilization is likely due to the formation of a thin PtOx layer at the Pt/β-Ga2O3 interface, as confirmed by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. Further exposure to a constant 350 °C environment for 10 h reveals a slight increase in the leakage current from 10−7 to 10−6 A at −5 V and degradation of the forward current, due to potential thermodynamic instability of the Ohmic contacts. This study provides insights into the changes in the Pt/β-Ga2O3 diode performance with thermal stress, offering a basis for predicting the device’s operational reliability at high temperatures for sensing and power applications.
