Power and Communications Hardware-in-the-Loop CPS Architecture and Platform for DER Monitoring and Control Applications: Preprint

The rapid growth of distributed energy resources (DERs) has prompted increasing interest in the monitoring and control of DERs through hybrid smart grid communications. The deployment of communications and computation has transformed the traditional physical power grid into a smart cyber-physical system (CPS). To fully understand the interdependency between physical grid and cyber netowrks, this study designed a power and communications hardware-in-the-loop (PCommHIL) CPS architecture, which enables the flexible verification of DER monitoring and control with hybrid communications architectures and Internet protocols. Design, development and case study of a PCommHIL testbed for the DER coordination are discussed in detail, and the proposed platform integrates DER devices, Advanced Metering Infrastructures (AMIs), and a suite of hybrid communications networks for distribution automation applications. Case study on DER situational awareness and Volt-Var control validates the efficacy of this proposed PCommHIL platform with hybrid communications designs. Results show that the HAN communication technologies play a critical role in hybrid designs and it is the bottleneck for DER applications. High performance communication technologies are highly recommended to be applied in the HAN for enhanced monitoring and real-time control of DERs.

A New Pneumococcal Capsule Type, 10D, is the 100th Serotype and Has a Large cps Fragment from an Oral Streptococcus

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a major human pathogen producing structurally diverse capsular polysaccharides. Widespread use of highly successful pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) targeting pneumococcal capsules has greatly reduced infections by the vaccine types but increased infections by nonvaccine serotypes. Herein, we report a new and the 100th capsule type, named serotype 10D, by determining its unique chemical structure and biosynthetic roles of all capsule synthesis locus (cps) genes. The name 10D reflects its serologic cross-reaction with serotype 10A and appearance of cross-opsonic antibodies in response to immunization with 10A polysaccharide in a 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine. Genetic analysis showed that 10D cps has three large regions syntenic to and highly homologous with cps loci from serotype 6C, serotype 39, and an oral streptococcus strain (S. mitis SK145). The 10D cps region syntenic to SK145 is about 6 kb and has a short gene fragment of wciNα at the 5' end. The presence of this nonfunctional wciNα fragment provides compelling evidence for a recent interspecies genetic transfer from oral streptococcus to pneumococcus. Since oral streptococci have a large repertoire of cps loci, widespread PCV usage could facilitate the appearance of novel serotypes through interspecies recombination.

InterGraph-CPS: A Graph-Theoretic Approach to Characterize Cross-Domain Cyber-Physical Interdependencies and Uncertainties in Electric Grid Systems for Improved Decision-Making in Operation and Response

Critical infrastructure systems such as the electric grid are increasingly cyber-physical; yet, despite the cyber-physical characteristics of critical infrastructure systems, the physical process system and communication/control network system are traditionally analyzed in siloes. As these systems become more cyber-physical, it is crucial that models and methods are available to assess the cyber physical system (CPS) interdependencies, characteristics, and event propagation for improved planning, operation, and response. Thus, we proposed an integrated structural and temporal CPS interdependency analysis framework, InterGraph-CPS, that provides insight into the CPS function during normal operation as well as disturbances. This integrated structural and temporal interdependency framework is uniquely designed for assessing CPSs by account for the challenges of analyzing cyber and physical data streams together due to data availability, data type, and time scale differences. By leveraging both structural (e.g., graph analysis) and temporal (e.g., data analytics) techniques, different CPS behaviors and configurations can be accounted for.

CPS Testbed Architectures for WAMPAC using Industrial Substation and Control Center Platforms and Attack-Defense Evaluation

Advanced persistent threats and cyberattacks can impact wide-area monitoring, protection, and control (WAMPAC) system operation. Many cyber-physical system (CPS) testbeds have been developed for attack-defense experimentation and attack-resiliency tools evaluation for WAMPAC, but they are limited to a simulation-and-emulation based environment. This paper presents a quasi-realistic CPS attack-defense testbed-based framework for WAMPAC applications using the industrial substation and control center platforms such as eTerra integrated with the hardware-in-the-loop CPS smart grid testbed available at Iowa State University. The proposed framework includes various combinations of industry-grade substation and control center platforms, communication topologies, real-time digital simulators, and a novel cyber-physical distributed intrusion-and-anomaly detection system (D-IADS) for WAMPAC applications. The D-IADS includes a master at the control center and geographically distributed sensor devices at each substation. Each D-IADS sensor deployed at a substation or control center network monitors ingress and egress traffic, detect intrusions, and dispatch alerts to the D-IADS master. The D-IADS master centrally monitors and analyze the alerts and controls D-IADS sensors. We considered an EMP60 synthetic CPS grid as a case study to demonstrate the framework and proposed D-IADS for WAMPAC applications against cyberattack vectors such as Man-in-the-Middle DNP3 attack, denial-of-service, and data-integrity attacks.

The Scaling and Units of the Elastic Response Term for Rayleigh Waves that is Output by Computer Programs in Seismology (CPS)

We report on the scaling and units of the Rayleigh wave elastic response function A R (ω) that is output from the widely used Computer Programs in Seismology (CPS) to aid in the modeling of ground motion sourced by atmospheric explosions. The program uses mixed units (km, second, km/s, gm/cc) to keep A R (ω) near 10 0 and prevent any numerical underflow or overflow. We compare two models for the response of an elastic half space to the output from CPS. Our application inputs the recommended, mixed unit geological models to determine how researchers must scale this output to obtain physical units for A R (ω) that represents the amplitude scaling for the minimum group velocity (Airy phase) contribution to Rayleigh waves. We determine that a CPS user must scale the output for A R (ω) by 10 -12 (m/km) 2 (g/cc/m 3 /kg) to obtain MKS (meter, kg, second) units and then must multiply this result by the vertical component eigenfunction squared, that is evaluated at the free surface.

Acceleration of Oxygen Ions in Dipolarization Events: 1. CPS Distributions

Abstract Using an MHD simulation of near tail reconnection associated with a flow burst and the collapse (dipolarization) of the inner tail in combination with test particle tracing we study the acceleration and flux increases of energetic oxygen ions (O + ). The characteristic orbits, distributions, and acceleration mechanisms are governed by the dimensionless parameter σ = ω ci t n , where ω ci is the ion gyro frequency and t n a characteristic Alfvén time of the MHD simulation. For σ < 1, central plasma sheet (CPS) populations after the passage of the dipolarization front are found to resemble half‐shells in velocity space oriented toward dusk. They originate from within the CPS and are energized typically by a single encounter of the region of enhanced cross‐tail electric field associated with the flow burst. For larger σ values ( σ > 1) the O + distributions resemble more closely those of protons, consisting of two counter‐streaming field‐aligned beams and an, albeit more tenuous and irregular, ring population perpendicular to the magnetic field. The existence of the beams, however, depends on suitable earthward moving source populations in the plasma sheet boundary layer or the adjacent lobes. The acceleration to higher energies is found to indicate a charge dependence, consistent with a dominance of more highly charged ions at energies of a few hundred keV. As in earlier simulations, the simulated fluxes show large anisotropies and nongyrotropic effects, phase bunching, and spatially and temporally localized beams.

A Self-Sustained CPS Design for Reliable Wildfire Monitoring

Continuous monitoring of areas nearby the electric grid is critical for preventing and early detection of devastating wildfires. Existing wildfire monitoring systems are intermittent and oblivious to local ambient risk factors, resulting in poor wildfire awareness. Ambient sensor suites deployed near the gridlines can increase the monitoring granularity and detection accuracy. However, these sensors must address two challenging and competing objectives at the same time. First, they must remain powered for years without manual maintenance due to their remote locations. Second, they must provide and transmit reliable information if and when a wildfire starts. The first objective requires aggressive energy savings and ambient energy harvesting, while the second requires continuous operation of a range of sensors. To the best of our knowledge, this paper presents the first self-sustained cyber-physical system that dynamically co-optimizes the wildfire detection accuracy and active time of sensors. The proposed approach employs reinforcement learning to train a policy that controls the sensor operations as a function of the environment (i.e., current sensor readings), harvested energy, and battery level. Here, the proposed cyber-physical system is evaluated extensively using real-life temperature, wind, and solar energy harvesting datasets and an open-source wildfire simulator. In long-term (5 years) evaluations, the proposed framework achieves 89% uptime, which is 46% higher than a carefully tuned heuristic approach. At the same time, it averages a 2-minute initial response time, which is at least 2.5× faster than the same heuristic approach. Furthermore, the policy network consumes 0.6 mJ per day on the TI CC2652R microcontroller using TensorFlow Lite for Micro, which is negligible compared to the daily sensor suite energy consumption.

Development of a self-lubricating high-efficiency hybrid seal composed of carbon nanotube-coated metal meshes for CSP turbomachinery (SETO CPS #36333 Final Report)

In turbomachinery, internal leakage flow accounts for up to 3% of the total thermodynamic cycle energy loss. Tradeoff must be made between the sealing efficiency (smaller clearance) and the friction and wear issues for interfering with the shaft (larger clearance). This ORNL-Danfoss joint effort developed a novel hybrid seal composed of carbon nanotube (CNT)-coated metal meshes. The CNT growth process was based on a self-catalyzing chemical vapor deposition and these multiwall CNTs were well aligned with high crystallinity. This hybrid material structure takes advantage of the CNT’s low-friction nature and uses the metal mesh as an extendable backbone. Full-scale experimental seals were designed, fabricated, and optimized for sealing performance and durability. The CNT-coated metal mesh seal demonstrated superior gas sealing efficiency to the baseline labyrinth seal and significantly improved shaft surface protection compared with the state-of-the-art superalloy brush seal on the static rig and full-scale compressor dynamometer tests. The CNT-metal mesh seal is low-cost and scalable and can potentially benefit wide applications, including CSP and other power generation, marine, automotive, and HVAC.

Towards 5G-Enabled Operational Technology for Process Monitoring and Network Slicing

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are deployed to monitor physical processes in critical cyber-enabled services like power generation. However, CPS ecosystems are typically designed without robust security. While it is important to ensure optimal performance of the Operational Technology (OT) environments, security cannot be overlooked. To modernize traditional OT services, 5G technology is being integrated. 5G technology offers low latency and high availability, making it a suitable infrastructure for managing and monitoring physical processes. How-ever, integrating 5G mechanisms into large-scale OT networks introduces new implementation and performance challenges. Therefore, this paper presents a 5G-enabled CPS architecture (5G-CPS) that describes the necessary components, services, and communication protocols and conducts feasibility study to integrate 5G technology in industrial control system networks to understand the performance merits. The 5G-CPS architecture aims to minimize implementation and operational challenges associated with integrating 5G technology into constrained OT.

Soft and Stretchable Thienopyrroledione–Based Polymers via Direct Arylation

π-conjugated polymers (CPs) that are concurrently soft and stretchable are needed for deformable electronics. Molecular-level modification of indacenodithiophene (IDT) copolymers, a class of CPs that exhibit high hole mobilities (μ hole ), is an approach that can help realize intrinsically soft and stretchable CPs. Numerous examples of design strategies to adjust the stretchability of CPs exist, but imparting softness is comparatively less studied. In this study, a systematic molecular weight (MW) series is constructed on a promising candidate for soft CPs, poly(indacenodithiophene-co-thienopyrroledione) (p(IDT C16- TPD C8 )), by optimizing direct arylation polymerization conditions in hopes of improving stretchability and μhole without significantly impacting softness. We found p(IDT C16- TPD C8 ) at a degree of polymerization of 32 shows high stretchability (crack onset strain, CoS > 100%) without significantly impacting softness (elastic modulus, E = 32 MPa), which to the best of our knowledge outperforms previously reported stretchable and soft CPs. To further study how molecular-level modifications impact polymer properties, a MW series of a new extended donor unit polymer, poly(indacenodithienothiophene-co-thienopyrroledione) (p(IDTT C16- TPD C8 )), was synthesized. The IDTT C16 copolymers did not result in a greater average μ hole when comparing between p(IDTT C16- TPD C8 ) and p(IDT C16- TPD C8 ) despite their higher crystallinity observed by GIWAXS. While these findings warrant further investigation, this study points toward unique charge transport properties of IDT-based polymers.

Conducting Polymers Meet Lithium–Sulfur Batteries: Progress, Challenges, and Perspectives

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have attracted increased interest because of the high theoretical energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Conducting polymers (CPs), as one of the most promising materials used in Li–S batteries, can not only facilitate electron transfer and buffer the large volumetric change of sulfur benefiting from their porous structure and excellent flexibility, but also enable stronger physical/chemical adsorption capacity toward polysulfides (LiPSs) when doped with abundant heteroatoms to promote the sulfur redox kinetics and achieve the high sulfur loading. This review firstly introduces the properties of various CPs including structural CPs (polypyrrole (PPy), polyaniline (PANi), polyethylene dioxothiophene [PEDOT]) and compound CPs (polyethylene oxide (PEO), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly(acrylic acid) [PAA]), and their application potential in Li–S batteries. Furthermore, the research progress of various CPs in different components (cathode, separator, and interlayer) of Li–S batteries is systematically summarized. Finally, the application perspective of the CPs in Li–S batteries as a potential guidance is comprehensively discussed.
