Trends in actinide electronic structure revealed from asymmetric, isostructural transuranic metallocenes

The study of actinide electronic structure and bonding within rigorously controlled environments is fundamental to advancing nuclear applications. Here, we report a new set of isostructural actinide organometallics; An(COT big ) 2 , (An = Th, U, Np, and Pu), where COT big is the bulky 1,4-bis(triphenylsilyl)-substituted cyclooctatetraenyl dianion (1,4-(Ph 3 Si) 2 C 8 H 6 ) 2 -. The actinide(IV) metallocene sandwiches have a clam-shell structure, offering a new molecular symmetry to explore f-orbital contributions in bonding. Combined experimental and computational studies reveal that An(COT big ) 2 complexes strongly differ from the previously published coplanar An(COT) 2 sandwiches due to the bent geometry and electron-withdrawing nature of the substituents. While COT big displays comparatively weaker electron donation, the low-energy f-f transitions in An(COT big ) 2 have increased molar absorptivity consistent with the removal of the parity selection rule and better energetic matching between ligand and actinide 5f orbitals as the series is traversed. For Pu(COT big ) 2 , covalent mixing of donor 5f metal orbitals and the ligand-π orbitals is especially strong.

The Gas Phase Protonation Sites of Six Naturally Occurring Nicotinoids

We have determined the gas phase protonation sites of six naturally occurring nicotinoids, namely nicotine (NIC), nornicotine (NOR), anabasine (ANB), anatabine (ANT), cotinine (COT) and myosmine (MYO) from experimental cryogenic ion trap infrared spectroscopy and first principles electronic structure calculations. The structural motif of these compounds consists of a common Pyridine and a differing non-Pyridine rings. The protonation site on either of these two rings correlates with the nicotinoid’s biological activity (addiction). At room temperature NIC is a mixture of Pyridine and Pyrrolidine (non-Pyridene) protomers, NOR, ANB, ANT and COT are pure Pyridine protomers and finally MYO is mostly a Pyroline (non-Pyridine) protomer. Their biological activity (addiction) correlates with the protonation preference in the nonPyridine protomer, with the exception of MYO, which, although is protonated in the Pyroline (non-Pyridine) protomer, it is not addictive because of a conjugated p system that induces a flat structure that is not optimally interacting with the environment in the in the binding pocket of the human brain.

Gallium Arsenide Semiconductor Opening Switches: Enabling Nanosecond High Powering Pulsed Systems

The goal of this work awas to investigate design manufacturing semiconductor opening switches (SOS) in both silicon and gallium arsenide (GaAs). Solid-state opening switches are critical components for pulsed power systems and applications in directed energy, dielectric wall accelerators, and novel semiconductor manufacturing techniques. Under this funding, we have developed silicon SOS designs that suppresses an unwanted prepulse, increases the peak output voltage by about 10 percent, and reduces the pulse rise time by ~ 4x compared with more conventional profiles. Through this effort we have improved device fabrication and bonding techniques. Additionally, work on this the GaAs opening switch has defined a unique application space that these devices are suited for. GaAs opening switches have short risetimes and pulse widths compared to silicon devices, however the short carrier lifetime of GaAs makes the circuit design more challenging than in silicon. For high PRF operation, the lifetime of the GaAs is an advantage compared to silicon. TCAD simulations of GaAs devices have been used to optimize a GaAs profile. Additionally, we have designed pulsers with sub 50ns reserve pump times and tested GaAs COTs PIN diodes in them.

Real-Time High-Accuracy Digital Wireless Time, Frequency, and Phase Calibration for Coherent Distributed Antenna Arrays

his work presents a fully-digital high-accuracy real-time calibration procedure for frequency and time alignment of open-loop wirelessly coordinated coherent distributed antenna array (CDA) modems, enabling radio frequency (RF) phase coherence of spatially separated commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software-defined radios (SDRs) without cables or external references such as the global navigation satellite system (GNSS). Building on previous work using high-accuracy spectrally-sparse time of arrival (ToA) waveforms and a multistep ToA refinement process, a high-accuracy two-way time transfer (TWTT)-based time–frequency coordination approach is demonstrated. Due to the two-way nature of the high-accuracy TWTT approach, the time and frequency estimates are Doppler and multipath tolerant, so long as the channel is reciprocal over the synchronization epoch. This technique is experimentally verified using COTS SDRs in a lab environment in static and dynamic scenarios and with significant multipath scatterers. Time, frequency, and phase stability were evaluated by beamforming over coaxial cables to an oscilloscope which achieved time and phase precisions of ~60– 70 ps , with median coherent gains above 99% using optimized coordination parameters, and a beamforming frequency root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 3.73 ppb in a dynamic scenario. Finally, experiments were conducted to compare the performance of this technique with previous works using an analog continuous-wave two-tone (CWTT) frequency reference technique in both static and dynamic settings.
