Multimodal CO2 Transportation Cost Model

This model provides a cost estimate for transporting CO2 via truck or rail in the United States using commercially available equipment and technologies. The model includes an analysis of direct and indirect CO2 emissions to determine costs per net tonne of CO2 transported. Publicly available data and methods published in the peer-reviewed literature are used to the extent possible; references are available at the bottom of the "Calculations" sheet. Upstream (i.e., liquefaction, buffer storage) and downstream (i.e., buffer storage, reconditioning) activities are included in the model of emissions and costs. All capital and operating expenditures are estimated in the "Calculations" sheet. The cost of financing the project is determined in the "FINEX" sheet. All user inputs are done via drop down menus in on the "User Interface" sheet. Summary results are also provided on the "User Interface" sheet.

CO2 Transport Planning Database

The CO2 Transport Planning Database v3.0 is a geospatial resource, containing over 70 gigabytes of data representing critical considerations for the spatial routing of pipelines and transport of CO2, from source to sink. Considerations include state-specific legislation, land use requirements, existing infrastructure, and hazard prevention areas. Built to support strategic domestic energy transport planning and development, more than 60 layers of this database have been weighted (Weight fields) according to current legislation and pipeline construction recommendations. Weighted values range from zero to one, where zero represents potentially more acceptable areas for transport based on the various considerations, and a value of one represents areas that should be avoided. This geospatial database provides a baseline for the Smart CO2 Transport Planning Tool.

Intermountain West Energy Sustainability & Transitions Initiative: CO2 Transport and Geologic Storage Modeling Results

These resources provide the full set of cost modeling results and methods as part of the I-WEST Roadmap Initiative that were used to compile figures as part of the "Pathways to CO2 Utilization and Storage for the Intermountain West Region" chapter. The data were generated from a series of National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) cost models and relate to carbon dioxide (CO2) transport costs, CO2 enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) economics, and saline storage economics. These models were used to analyze various business cases given changes in technical and financial assumptions for the I-WEST region as a means to explore how these assumptions influence CO2 transport and storage costs, as well as to evaluate the effect of changing oil prices on the viability of CO2-EOR and the mass of CO2 stored via CO2-EOR. The accompanying report titled "Intermountain West Energy Sustainability & Transitions Initiative: CO2 Transport and Geologic Storage Modeling Results" provides a detailed overview on the models, assumptions, and parameters used in the modeling, as well as example results..

Optimal CO2 Transport and Storage Cost Screening: Application Example

Poster on “Optimal CO2 Transport and Storage Cost Screening: Application Example” for the CCUS 2025 conference held in Houston, Texas March 3-5, 2025. A major challenge to commercial scale CCS deployment from the perspective of coal and natural gas-fired power plants is understanding cost-optimal CO2 transport and viable geologic storage options. This study demonstrates unique workflows, using NETL-developed, publicly-available models and tools, to efficiently estimate optimal CO2 transport and storage (T&S) costs for each of the CO2 sources in NETL’s Carbon Capture Retrofit Databases (CCRD) for Electricity Generating Units. The results demonstrate the impact of cost-drivers on optimal T&S, and trends in optimal T&S data, based on real point sources that could be retrofitted with CO2 source technologies.

Update of CO2_T_COM and CO2_S_COM Models (CO2 Transport and Storage Costs)

PowerPoint file for presentation made on August 18, 2022 at NETL's Carbon Management Project Review Meeting. The presentation provides an overview of updates and improvements to two techno-economic models. The FECM/NETL CO2 Transport Cost Model (CO2_T_COM) is a model for transport of liquid CO2 by pipeline. CO2_T_COM is a point to point pipeline model. FECM/NETL CO2 Saline Storage Cost Model (CO2_S_COM) is a model for storage of CO2 in deep saline geologic formations.

Modeling the Cost of Onshore CO2 Pipeline Transport and Onshore CO2 Saline Storage

This paper describes the FECM/NETL CO2 Transport Cost Model (CO2_T_COM), a technoeconomic model of CO2 transport by pipeline, and the FECM/NETL CO2 Saline Storage Cost Model (CO2_S_COM), a technoeconomic model of storage of CO2 in a deep, subsurface saline formation. The results of applying CO2_T_COM to calculate break-even CO2 prices to transport CO2 at different mass flow rates and different distances are presented. Similarly, CO2_S_COM is used to calculate the break-even CO2 price for storing CO2 in 314 potential storage formations across the US. These break-even prices are used to construct cost-supply curves for CO2 storage which are presented on a national and regional basis. CO2_T_COM and CO2_S_COM are the most comprehensive open source technoeconomic models available for analyzing CO2 pipeline transport and CO2 saline storage. To be presented at the SPE?AAPG/SEG Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage Conference in Houston, TX, March 11-13, 2024.

Smart CO2 Transport-Route Planning Tool

NETL has developed the Smart CO2 Transport-Route Planning Tool to help inform energy transport planning and development. The stand-alone, open-source tool applies data-driven, geospatial and machine-learning informed logic to identify potential routes or evaluate existing corridors based on current legislation, best construction practices, and more. Underpinning the interactive tool, is NETL’s CO2 Transport Planning Database (https://edx.netl.doe.gov/dataset/ccs-pipeline-route-planning-database-v1). This geospatial resource contains more than 70 gigabytes of data representing more than 60 critical factors for the spatial routing of CO2 transport, including land use requirements, existing infrastructure, high consequence areas, and natural hazards.

NETL’s Techno-Economic Models for Assessing CO2 Pipeline Transport and Geologic Storage

Presentation at Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Workshop: Future Energy Roadmap – Navigating Through the Energy Transition, held in Galveston, Texas, August 22-23, 2022. The presentation provides an overview of the techno-economic models NETL has developed for assessing performance characteristics and cost drivers for CO2 pipeline transport (FECM/NETL CO2 Transport Cost Model or CO2_T_COM), CO2 saline storage (FECM/NETL CO2 Saline Storage Cost Model or CO2_S_COM), and oil production and CO2 storage using CO2 enhanced oil recovery (EOR) (FE/NETL CO2 Prophet Model or CO2_Prophet and FE/NETL Onshore CO2 EOR Cost Model or CO2_E_COM). A high-level description of each model is presented along with useful outputs that can be generated with each model. These tools can be used individually to evaluate the economic opportunity for specific CCUS components, or they can be used in tandem to assess an integrated CCUS value chain.

CO2 Streams Captured From Industrial Processes and Corrosion of Steel Pipelines

Based on the knowledge accumulated in the last decade related to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) processes and the identified gaps in knowledge, our study identifies and quantifies the key issues that impact the corrosion of materials, specifically relating to the integrity of structures for the CO2 transport pipelines and provides a better understanding of the materials’ compatibility with CO2 steams with impurities. This will help to understand the corrosion risks associated with CO2 transport and injection and leverage existing infrastructure or rebuild new pipeline networks to transport CO2 with impurities for EOR or geological storage.
