CI/CD Efforts for Validation, Verification and Benchmarking OpenMP Implementations

Software developers must adapt to keep up with the changing capabilities of platforms so that they can utilize the power of High-Performance Computers (HPC), including exascale systems. OpenMP, a directive-based parallel programming model, allows developers to include directives to existing C, C++, or Fortran code to allow node level parallelism without compromising performance. This paper describes our CI/CD efforts to provide easy evaluation of the support of OpenMP across different compilers using existing testsuites and benchmark suites on HPC platforms. Our main contributions include (1) the set of a Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Development (CD) workflow that captures bugs and provides faster feedback to compiler developers, (2) an evaluation of OpenMP (offloading) implementations supported by AMD, HPE, GNU, LLVM, and Intel, and (3) evaluation of the quality of compilers across different heterogeneous HPC platforms. With the comprehensive testing through the CI/CD workflow, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state of OpenMP (offloading) support in different compilers and heterogeneous platforms consisting of CPUs and GPUs from NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel.

Vitis CI/CD & Containerization

Modern development flows that use tooling for automated building, testing, and deployment of software are becoming the norm for large scale software and hardware projects. These flows offer quite a few advantages that make them desirable, but when attempting to implement them for projects that use FPGAs, some complications can arise when attempting to integrate them with traditional FPGA toolchains and deployment workflows. In this poster, we present early our early efforts integrating the Vitis FPGA toolchain into a modern, Kuberentes and Github actions based CI/CD pipeline.

dCache CI/CD migration to Kubernetes

For over two decades, the dCache project has provided open-source to satisfy ever-more demanding storage requirements. More than 80 sites worldwide rely on dCache to provide services for LHC experiments, Belle-II, Eu- XFEL, and others. This can be achieved only with a well-established process from a whiteboard, where ideas are created through development, packaging, and testing. The project’s build and test infrastructure is based on Jenkins CI and a set of virtual machines. This infrastructure is maintained by dCache developers. With the introduction of the DESY-central Gitlab server, the developers have started migrating from VM-based testing to container-based deployments in the onsite Kubernetes cluster. As a result, we have packaged dCache containers and Helm charts that can be used by other sites to reproduce our test and build steps quickly or to evaluate new releases on their pre-production systems and, eventually, become a standard model of dCache deployment at the sites. This paper describes the challenges we have faced, the techniques we used to solve them, and the issues that still need to be addressed.

Updated ENDF-6 Format Approval Process [Slides]

The presentation begins by discussing the original ENDF/B-VIII.0 format proposal lifecycle and states that the GNDS Expert Group has developed a gitlab-friendly review process that addresses concerns raised by the format proposal lifecycle. As a result, a revised ENDF/B-VIII.0 format proposal lifecycle has been created. The presentation then discusses the necessary steps in the lifecycle that are as follows: create an issue in the issue tracker, make your changes directly to the manual, submit it for review and final approval. The presentation concludes by discussing two other things, including the transition CI/CD from buildbot system to built-in gitlab CI/CD and that the revised format review process document will follow, pending approval.

The ePIC Simulation Campaign Workflow on the Open Science Grid

The ePIC collaboration is realizing the first experiment of the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory that will allow for a precision study of the nucleons and the nucleus at the scale of sea quarks and gluons through the study of electron-proton/ion collisions. This paper will discuss the current workflow for running centralized simulation campaigns for ePIC on the Open Science Grid (OSG) infrastructure. This involves monthly releases of ePIC software and container deployments to CVMFS, generation of input datasets in HepMC format according to collaboration-defined policy, using Snakemake in CI/CD for validation and benchmarking, and submitting jobs to the OSG condor scheduler for opportunistic running on available resources. File transfers utilize XrootD, and Rucio is used for data management. The workflow is continuously refined to improve daily throughput (currently 50-100k core hours per day) and minimize job failures. Since May 2023, monthly simulation campaigns employing the workflow have cumulatively used over 20 million core hours on the OSG and produced over 350 TB of simulation data. The campaigns incorporate simulations for the broad science program of the EIC and are actively used for the detector and physics studies in preparation of the Technical Design Report (TDR).

Containerization of Phase-2 Tracker Data Acquisition and Control Framework

The CMS Experiment has started an extensive upgrade program in the context of the High-Luminosity phase of the LHC (Phase-2). In order to cope with the highly demanding High-Luminosity conditions, CMS will need a completely new inner and outer tracking detectors. On top of R&D development, a Data AcQuisition (DAQ) software is being developed along with different applications to control, monitor and validate the newly produced modules of the future tracker. As more and more developers are getting involved to maintain all those codes, an environment where software and applications can work independently of the host machine operating system is crucial. The Phase-2 Tracker group decided to make use of Docker as containerization solution for its framework. This poster describes the containerization of DAQ software/applications utilized to test and validate the Tracker modules. This includes continuous integration and continuous deployment (so-called CI/CD) and running GUI applications inside containers.

EVs-at-RISC: A Secure and Resilient Interoperable SCM Control System Architecture for Electric Vehicle’s-at-Scale (Final Technical Report)

The EVs-at-RISC project was a five-year research, development, and demonstration initiative to create foundational tools for utility-scale fleet aggregation and Smart Charge Management (SCM) of Electric Vehicles (EV), Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI), and related Distributed Energy Resources (DER). Rather than seeking to develop and demonstrate highly perfected SCM algorithms and control strategies, this project instead focused on creating foundational software solutions that enable unprecedented digital interoperability across the communications technologies and vendor platforms used to manage EV , EVCI, and DER, as well as existing energy management infrastructure operated by utilities, grid operators, and aggregators. This project then extends these novel interoperability capabilities to develop and deploy powerful middleware abstractions across grid edge networks and EVCI/DER fleet aggregations incorporating modern software tools and best practices, such as CI/CD, to bring the immense capabilities of infrastructure-as-code and policy-as-code to modern grid edge network environments. This addresses the foremost systemic issues preventing realization of any net operational benefits from scaled deployment of behind-the-meter EV, EVCI, and DER assets in electric power grids and markets today. The results of this approach and project unlock massive potential for new SCM capabilities to be easily prototyped, evaluated, and deployed at-scale within the existing grid edge network infrastructure and EVCI/DER technology ecosystem. The EVs-at-RISC project achieves this by extending Open Field Message Bus (OpenFMB), a conceptual model for digital interoperability and distributed intelligence in traditional front-of-meter utility SCADA networks, validating our hypothesis that OpenFMB could be similarly used to solve systemic digital interoperability issues in behind-the-meter environments and unlock real-world utility-scale SCM capabilities without requiring any new proprietary vendor solutions or significant infrastructure reconfiguration.
