On the constrained Chebyshev approximation problem on ellipses

Constrained Chebyshev approximation problems of the type with minimum (p is an element of Pi(sub n):p(c)=1) and maximum (z is an element of E) with /p(z)/ are considered. Here Pi(sub n) denotes the set of all complex polynomials of degree at most n, E is any ellipse in the complex plane, and c is an element of C/E. Such approximation problems arise in the context of optimizing semi-iterative methods for the solution of large, sparse systems of linear equations Ax=b with complex non-Hermitian coefficient matrices A. The problem of obtaining optimal polynomial preconditioners for conjugate gradient type methods for Ax=b also leads to problems of this type. A new family of polynomials -- q(sub n)(z;c), n is an element of N, and c is an element of C/E -- are introduced as the polynomials which are optimal for a modified version of the Chebyshev approximation problem with Pi(sub n) replaced by a certain subfamily. Some simple properties of q(sub n) are also listed. A necessary and sufficient condition for q(sub n) to be the extremal polynomial for the approximation problem is then derived. Finally, it is shown that q(sub n) is indeed optimal for the problem for all fixed n whenever the distance between c and E is sufficiently large. Results of some numerical tests are presented.

Compression of ephemerides by discrete Chebyshev approximations

The use of Chebyshev series in representing the ephemerides of satellites and planets in terms of truncated polynomial series is discussed. Emphasis is placed on a FORTRAN package which was developed for fitting satellite orbits. The features desired in any approximation are: (1) the ability to compress a satellite emphemeris; (2) the ability to represent a satellite ephemeris over several orbits; (3) guaranteed accuracy to within prescribed tolerance over the time interval of consideration; and (4) fast processing. These features are imposed with an eye towards adapting the approximation for use on microprocessor applications in which storage is limited and real time processing is required.

On Bernstein type inequalities and a weighted Chebyshev approximation problem on ellipses

A classical inequality due to Bernstein which estimates the norm of polynomials on any given ellipse in terms of their norm on any smaller ellipse with the same foci is examined. For the uniform and a certain weighted uniform norm, and for the case that the two ellipses are not too close, sharp estimates of this type were derived and the corresponding extremal polynomials were determined. These Bernstein type inequalities are closely connected with certain constrained Chebyshev approximation problems on ellipses. Some new results were also presented for a weighted approximation problem of this type.

Generalized INF-SUP condition for Chebyshev approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations

An abstract mixed problem and its approximation are studied; both are well-posed if and only if several inf-sup conditions are satisfied. These results are applied to a spectral Galerkin method for the Stokes problem in a square, when it is formulated in Chebyshev weighted Sobolev spaces. Finally, a collocation method for the Navier-Stokes equations at Chebyshev nodes is analyzed.

Constrained Chebyshev approximations to some elementary functions suitable for evaluation with floating point arithmetic

Approximations which can be evaluated with precision using floating-point arithmetic are presented. The particular set of approximations thus far developed are for the function TAN and the functions of USASI FORTRAN excepting SQRT and EXPONENTIATION. These approximations are, furthermore, specialized to particular forms which are especially suited to a computer with a small memory, in that all of the approximations can share one general purpose subroutine for the evaluation of a polynomial in the square of the working argument.

Global error analysis of the Chebyshev rational approximation method

The Chebyshev rational approximation method (CRAM) has become a widely adopted method for solving nuclear depletion problems. Therefore, understanding CRAM’s accuracy is important for the safe operation of nuclear power plants. This article performs a global error analysis of CRAM and finds that, as the length of the time step approaches zero, the relative error measured between the exact and CRAM solutions at a fixed end time approaches one and infinity for even and odd orders, respectively; for intermediate time step sizes, a minimum in relative error is observed. Finally, we show that the reason for CRAM’s behavior is that the method is inconsistent. Two best practices for using CRAM, derived from these results, are: (1) use CRAM order 16 or higher, (2) if necessary, increase the CRAM order when multiphysics coupling requires smaller time steps.

Trajectory Optimization Using Adjoint Method and Chebyshev Polynomial Approximation for Minimizing Fuel Consumption During Climb

This paper describes two methods of trajectory optimization to obtain an optimal trajectory of minimum-fuel- to-climb for an aircraft. The first method is based on the adjoint method, and the second method is based on a direct trajectory optimization method using a Chebyshev polynomial approximation and cubic spine approximation. The approximate optimal trajectory will be compared with the adjoint-based optimal trajectory which is considered as the true optimal solution of the trajectory optimization problem. The adjoint-based optimization problem leads to a singular optimal control solution which results in a bang-singular-bang optimal control.

Mappings and accuracy for Chebyshev pseudo-spectral approximations

The effect of mappings on the approximation, by Chebyshev collocation, of functions which exhibit localized regions of rapid variation is studied. A general strategy is introduced whereby mappings are adaptively constructed which map specified classes of rapidly varying functions into low order polynomials which can be accurately approximated by Chebyshev polynomial expansions. A particular family of mappings constructed in this way is tested on a variety of rapidly varying functions similar to those occurring in approximations. It is shown that the mapped function can be approximated much more accurately by Chebyshev polynomial approximations than in physical space or where mappings constructed from other strategies are employed.

Removal of spurious modes encountered in solving stability problems by spectral methods

A technique based on the Galerkin approximation is developed to remove spurious roots arising when Chebyshev spectral methods are used to solve eigenvalue problems in hydrodynamic stability. The derivation of Galerkin-Chebyshev approximations is explained, and numerical results for the Orr-Sommerfeld equations of plane Poiseuille flow and a Blasius profile are presented in tables and compared with those obtained by the method of Zebib (1984). It is pointed out that the present method does not increase the size of the algebraic system to be solved.
