Materials Data on BaZrO3 by Materials Project

BaZrO3 is (Cubic) Perovskite structured and crystallizes in the cubic Pm-3m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Ba2+ is bonded to twelve equivalent O2- atoms to form BaO12 cuboctahedra that share corners with twelve equivalent BaO12 cuboctahedra, faces with six equivalent BaO12 cuboctahedra, and faces with eight equivalent ZrO6 octahedra. All Ba–O bond lengths are 3.01 Å. Zr4+ is bonded to six equivalent O2- atoms to form ZrO6 octahedra that share corners with six equivalent ZrO6 octahedra and faces with eight equivalent BaO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedral tilt angles are 0°. All Zr–O bond lengths are 2.13 Å. O2- is bonded in a distorted linear geometry to four equivalent Ba2+ and two equivalent Zr4+ atoms.

Materials Data on BaZrO3 by Materials Project

BaZrO3 is (Cubic) Perovskite-like structured and crystallizes in the tetragonal I4/mcm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Ba2+ is bonded to twelve O2- atoms to form BaO12 cuboctahedra that share corners with twelve equivalent BaO12 cuboctahedra, faces with six equivalent BaO12 cuboctahedra, and faces with eight equivalent ZrO6 octahedra. There are a spread of Ba–O bond distances ranging from 2.88–3.15 Å. Zr4+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form ZrO6 octahedra that share corners with six equivalent ZrO6 octahedra and faces with eight equivalent BaO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 0–10°. All Zr–O bond lengths are 2.13 Å. There are two inequivalent O2- sites. In the first O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted linear geometry to four equivalent Ba2+ and two equivalent Zr4+ atoms. In the second O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to four equivalent Ba2+ and two equivalent Zr4+ atoms.

Reactions of calcium orthosilicate and barium zirconate with oxides and sulfates of various elements

Calcium orthosilicate and barium zirconate were evaluated as the insulation layer of thermal barrier coatings for air cooled gas turbine components. Their reactions with various oxides and sulfates were studied at 1100 C and 1300 C for times ranging up to 400 and 200 hours, respectively. These oxides and sulfates represent potential impurities or additives in gas turbine fuels and in turbine combustion air, as well as elements of potential bond coat alloys. The phase compositions of the reaction products were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. BaZrO3 and 2CaO-SiO2 both reacted with P2O5, V2O5, Cr2O3, Al2O3, and SiO2. In addition, 2CaO-SiO2 reacted with Na2O, BaO, MgO, and CoO and BaZrO3 reacted with Fe2O3.

New Materials and an Efficient Processing Approach for Materials for Harsh Environments – Continuous Electric Field Assisted Sintering

Electric-field assisted sintering (EFAS) is an advanced manufacturing method for the consolidation and processing of ceramic and metal materials. It is a particularly excellent candidate for efficient materials processing as it has greater than 90% energy cost savings and improved CO2 emissions compared to traditional sintering in a furnace. This is due to direct rapid heating of the materials and molds leveraging an electrification phenomenon called Joule heating where electrical current is passed through the sample/mold assemblies causing direct heating. The technique does have limitations though as it is traditionally a batch-process and suffers from scale up difficulties. To overcome this, researchers at Idaho National Laboratory changed the form factor of traditional EFAS instruments to develop and construct a continuous rolling electric-field assisted sintering (CEFAS) device. Its unique design creates highly localized electrical, thermal, and mechanical process parameters for continuous samples of limitless length. Advanced core shell powder materials were also created using fluidized powder bed atomic layer deposition of core/shell solid oxide electrochemical electrode/electrolyte BaCe0.7Zr0.1Y0.1Yb0.1O3 (BCZYYb) and yttrium doped BaZrO3 (BZY) to be a feedstock for the new CEFAS instrument. The innovative core/shell powder is hypothesized to have high protonic conductivity with enhanced environmental resistance. The completed project covers innovations in process control and design enabled by control theory, finite element modeling and mechanical design, three dimensionally printed carbon-carbon composite manufacturing and utilization, and green materials processing techniques.

Improving Proton Conductivity by Navigating Proton Trapping in High Scandium-Doped Barium Zirconate Electrolytes

Proton-conducting oxides are used in intermediate-temperature (300 °C < T < 700 °C) applications of fuel cells, electrolyzers, membrane reactors, hydrogen pumps, and sensors. The proton conductivity of doped ABO 3 perovskites is partly dependent on the proton concentration and hence on the level of material hydration. However, how the material hydration ability is affected by differences in doping is not fully understood. Here, we show the prospect of proton trapping and detrapping that influences material hydration and dehydration. The proton-trapping influence is significant for Sc-doped BaZrO 3 compared to Y-doped BaZrO 3 . Here, our work offers a perspective to understand how defect interaction/associations influence the hydration ability of proton-conducting oxides. Furthermore, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was revealed to be a valuable technique for studying the proton-trapping phenomena and the defect chemistry of dense proton conductors. Density functional theory calculations also showed that a high hydration level in Sc-doped BaZrO 3 boosts proton migration. In contrast, the effect of boosting the proton migration due to increased hydration is limited for Y-doped BaZrO 3 . This effect, in turn, might explain the trend of conductivity with dopant concentration in doped BaZrO 3 .

Direct Ab Initio Simulation of the Synthesis of BaZrO 3 and the Microstructure Impacts on Proton Transport

Controlling and predicting the processing-structure-performance relationship in functional materials is a grand challenge in materials science, with important implications for a wide range of emerging applications; a high fidelity understanding of the performance impact of microstructures formed under synthesis conditions is required to develop advanced materials, such as solid-state fuel cells and electrolyzers. Using the ceramic BaZrO 3 as a case study, we directly simulate the synthesis and investigate how proton transport is dictated by microstructures. We develop a framework that couples density functional theory (DFT), machine-learning interatomic potential (MLIP) driven molecular dynamics, and grand canonical Monte Carlo to perform large-scale, microstructure-resolved, atomistic simulations of proton transport in experimentally representative polycrystalline structures. Our fully ab initio approach, using a MLIP as a proxy for DFT, allows us to quantify the competition between two distinct diffusion mechanisms: one associated with grain-boundary regions and another within grains. When the impacts of grain boundaries are taken into account, proton transport exhibits substantial deviation from the bulk oxide limit. This addresses long-standing discrepancies between theory and experiments. Our integrated approach provides atomistic insight into microstructure-dependent proton pathways in BaZrO 3 and establishes a general protocol for predicting processing-structure-performance relationships.
