Ba2CdSn crystallizes in the orthorhombic Immm space group. The structure is one-dimensional and consists of two Ba2CdSn ribbons oriented in the (1, 0, 0) direction. Ba is bonded in a linear geometry to one Cd and one Sn atom. The Ba–Cd bond length is 3.68 Å. The Ba–Sn bond length is 3.17 Å. Cd is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent Ba atoms. Sn is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent Ba atoms.
Ba2CdSn is Heusler structured and crystallizes in the cubic Fm-3m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Ba is bonded in a body-centered cubic geometry to four equivalent Cd and four equivalent Sn atoms. All Ba–Cd bond lengths are 3.71 Å. All Ba–Sn bond lengths are 3.71 Å. Cd is bonded in a body-centered cubic geometry to eight equivalent Ba atoms. Sn is bonded in a body-centered cubic geometry to eight equivalent Ba atoms.
