NaCaB5H14O17H2 crystallizes in the triclinic P-1 space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of two hydrogen molecules and one NaCaB5H14O17 sheet oriented in the (0, -1, 1) direction. In the NaCaB5H14O17 sheet, Na1+ is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to one H1+ and six O2- atoms. The Na–H bond length is 2.46 Å. There are a spread of Na–O bond distances ranging from 2.27–2.56 Å. There are a spread of Na–O bond distances ranging from 2.38–2.73 Å. Ca2+ is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight O2- atoms. There are a spread of Ca–O bond distances ranging from 2.35–2.74 Å. There are five inequivalent B3+ sites. In the first B3+ site, B3+ is bonded in a trigonal planar geometry to three O2- atoms. There is one shorter (1.37 Å) and two longer (1.38 Å) B–O bond length. In the second B3+ site, B3+ is bonded to four O2- atoms to form corner-sharing BO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of B–O bond distances ranging from 1.46–1.53 Å. Na1+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form distorted NaO6 pentagonal pyramids that share a cornercorner with one BO4 tetrahedra and an edgeedge with one BO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Na–O bond distances ranging from 2.38–2.69 Å. Ca2+ is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to nine O2- atoms. There are a spread of Ca–O bond distances ranging from 2.42–2.88 Å. There are five inequivalent B3+ sites. In the first B3+ site, B3+ is bonded to four O2- atoms to form BO4 tetrahedra that share a cornercorner with one NaO6 pentagonal pyramid and a cornercorner with one BO4 tetrahedra.
