Measurement of the energy dependence of the e+e- → $ B\overline{B} $, $ B{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $ and $ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $ exclusive cross sections

We report the first measurement of the exclusive cross sections e + e - → $B\overline{B}$, e + e - → $B{\overline{B}}^{\ast }$, and e + e - → ${B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast }$ in the energy range from 10.63 GeV to 11.02 GeV. The B mesons are fully reconstructed in a large number of hadronic final states and the three channels are identified using a beam-constrained-mass variable. The shapes of the exclusive cross sections show oscillatory behavior with several maxima and minima. The results are obtained using data collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e - collider.

Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions $\mathcal{B}\left({B}_c^{+}\to {B}_s^0{\pi}^{+}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({B}_c^{+}\to J/\psi {\pi}^{+}\right)$

The ratio of branching fractions of ${B}_c^{+}\to {B}_s^0{\pi}^{+}$ and ${B}_c^{+}\to J/\psi {\pi}^{+}$ decays is measured with proton-proton collision data of a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were collected with the LHCb experiment during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb –1 . The ${B}_s^0$ mesons are reconstructed via the decays ${B}_s^0\to J/\psi \phi$ and ${B}_s^0\to {D}_s^{-}{\pi}^{+}$. The ratio of branching fractions is measured to be $\mathcal{B}\left({B}_c^{+}\to {B}_s^0{\pi}^{+}\right)/\mathcal{B}\left({B}_c^{+}\to J/\psi {\pi}^{+}\right)=91\pm 10\pm 8\pm 3$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the knowledge of the branching fractions of the intermediate state decays.

Search for single vector-like $B$ quark production and decay via $B$ → $bH$($b\overline{b}$) in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for single production of a vector-like B quark decaying into a Standard Model b-quark and a Standard Model Higgs boson, which decays into a $b\overline{b}$ pair. The search is carried out in 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC between 2015 and 2018. No significant deviation from the Standard Model background prediction is observed, and mass-dependent exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the resonance production cross-section in several theoretical scenarios determined by the couplings c W , c Z and c H between the B quark and the Standard Model W, Z and Higgs bosons, respectively. For a vector-like B occurring as an isospin singlet, the search excludes values of c W greater than 0.45 for a B resonance mass (m B ) between 1.0 and 1.2 TeV. For 1.2 TeV < m B < 2.0 TeV, c W values larger than 0.50–0.65 are excluded. If the B occurs as part of a (B, Y) doublet, the smallest excluded c Z coupling values range between 0.3 and 0.5 across the investigated resonance mass range 1.0 TeV < m B < 2.0 TeV.

Measurements of the branching fractions B ( B ¯ 0 → D * + π - ) and B ( B ¯ 0 → D * + K - ) and tests of QCD factorization

Using (771.6 ± 10.6) × 10 6 $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs recorded by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e + e - collider, we report the branching fractions $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ 0 → D* + π - ) = (2.62 ± 0.02 ± 0.09 X 10 -3 and $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ 0 → D* + K - ) = (2.22 ± 0.06 ± 0.08) × 10 -4 ; the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. A measurement of the ratio of these branching fractions is also presented, R K/π = $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ → D* + K - )/ $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ → D* + π - ) = (8.41 ± 0.24 ± 0.13) × 10 -2 , where systematic uncertainties due to the D* + meson reconstruction cancel out. Furthermore, we report a new QCD factorization test based on the measured ratios for $\overline{B}$ → D* + h - and $\overline{B}$ → D* + ℓ - $v$ decays at squared momentum transfer values equivalent to the mass of the h = π or K hadron. The parameters |a 1 (h)| are measured to be |a 1 (π)| = 0.884 ± 0.004 ± 0.003 ± 0.016 and |a 1 (K)| = 0.913 ± 0.019 ± 0.008 ± 0.013, where the last uncertainties account for all external inputs. These values are approximately 15% lower than those expected from theoretical predictions. Subsequently, flavor SU(3) symmetry is tested by measuring the ratios for pions and kaons, |a 1 (K)| 2 /|a 1 (π) 2 | = 1.066 ± 0.042 ± 0.018 ± 0.023, as well as for different particle species. The ratio is consistent with unity and therefore no evidence for SU(3) symmetry breaking effects is found at the 5% precision level.

Measurement of the Branching Fractions $\mathcal{B}(B^0 → p\bar{p}p\bar{p})$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0_S → p\bar{p}p\bar{p})$

Searches for the rare hadronic decays $B^0 → p\bar{p}p\bar{p}$ and $B^0_S → p\bar{p}p\bar{p}$ are performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 . Significances of 9.3⁢σ and 4.0⁢σ, including statistical and systematic uncertainties, are obtained for the $B^0 → p\bar{p}p\bar{p}$ and $B^0_S → p\bar{p}p\bar{p}$ signals, respectively. The branching fractions are measured relative to the topologically similar normalization decays B 0 → J/ψ⁢(→ $p\bar{p}$)⁢K* 0 ⁡(→ K + ⁡π – ) and B$^0_s$→J/ψ⁢(→ $p\bar{p}$) $\phi$(→K + ⁢K – ). The branching fractions are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 → p\bar{p}p\bar{p})$ = (2.2 ± 0.4 ± 0.1 ± 0.1)×10 –8 and $\mathcal{B}(B^0_S → p\bar{p}p\bar{p})$ = (2.3 ± 1.0 ± 0.2 ± 0.1)×10 –8 . In these measurements, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third one is due to the external branching fraction of the normalization channel.

b ¯ b ¯ u d and b ¯ b ¯ u s tetraquarks from lattice QCD using symmetric correlation matrices with both local and scattering interpolating operators

We study the b ¯ b ¯ u d tetraquark with quantum numbers I ( J P ) = 0 ( 1 + ) as well as the b ¯ b ¯ u s tetraquark with quantum numbers J P = 1 + using lattice QCD. We improve on existing work by including both local and scattering interpolating operators on both sides of the correlation functions and use symmetric correlation matrices. This allows not only a reliable determination of the energies of QCD-stable tetraquark ground states, but also of low-lying excited states, which are meson-meson scattering states. The latter is particularly important for future finite-volume scattering analyses. Here, we perform chiral and continuum extrapolations of just the ground-state energies, for which finite-volume effects are expected to be small. Our resulting tetraquark binding energies, − 100 ± 10 − 51 + 36 MeV for b ¯ b ¯ u d and − 30 ± 3 − 31 + 11 MeV for b ¯ b ¯ u s , are consistent with other recent lattice-QCD predictions. Search for ${\text {Z}{}{}} {\text {Z}{}{}} $ and ${\text {Z}{}{}} {\text {H}{}{}} $ production in the ${\text {b}{}{}} {\bar{{\text {b}{}{}}}{}{}} {\text {b}{}{}} {\bar{{\text {b}{}{}}}{}{}} $ final state using proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $

A search for ${\text {Z}{}{}} {\text {Z}{}{}} $ and ${\text {Z}{}{}} {\text {H}{}{}} $ production in the ${\text {b}{}{}} {\bar{{\text {b}{}{}}}{}{}} {\text {b}{}{}} {\bar{{\text {b}{}{}}}{}{}} $ final state is presented, where H is the standard model (SM) Higgs boson. The search uses an event sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 133$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13$\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$ with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis introduces several novel techniques for deriving and validating a multi-dimensional background model based on control samples in data. A multiclass multivariate classifier customized for the ${\text {b}{}{}} {\bar{{\text {b}{}{}}}{}{}} {\text {b}{}{}} {\bar{{\text {b}{}{}}}{}{}} $ final state is developed to derive the background model and extract the signal. The data are found to be consistent, within uncertainties, with the SM predictions. The observed (expected) upper limits at 95% confidence level are found to be 3.8 (3.8) and 5.0 (2.9) times the SM prediction for the ${\text {Z}{}{}} {\text {Z}{}{}} $ and ${\text {Z}{}{}} {\text {H}{}{}} $ production cross sections, respectively.

Search for the HH → $ b\overline{b}b\overline{b} $ process via vector-boson fusion production using proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for Higgs boson pair production via vector-boson fusion (VBF) in the $ b\overline{b}b\overline{b} $ final state is carried out with the ATLAS experiment using 126 fb –1 of proton- proton collision data delivered at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 by the Large Hadron Collider. This search is sensitive to VBF production of additional heavy bosons that may decay into Higgs boson pairs, and in a non-resonant topology it can constrain the quartic coupling between the Higgs bosons and vector bosons. No significant excess relative to the Standard Model expectation is observed, and limits on the production cross-section are set at the 95% confidence level for a heavy scalar resonance in the context of an extended Higgs sector, and for non-resonant Higgs boson pair production. Interpretation in terms of the coupling between a Higgs boson pair and two vector bosons is also provided: coupling values normalised to the Standard Model expectation of κ 2V < –0.76 and κ 2V > 2.90 are excluded at the 95% confidence level in data.

Search for resonant pair production of Higgs bosons in the $\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}$ final state using large-area jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for the resonant production of a pair of standard model-like Higgs bosons using data from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The final state consists of two b quark-antiquark pairs. The search is conducted in the region of phase space where at least one of the pairs is highly Lorentz-boosted and is reconstructed as a single large-area jet. The other pair may be either similarly merged or resolved, the latter reconstructed using two b-tagged jets. The data are found to be consistent with standard model processes and are interpreted as 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of the cross sections and the branching fractions of the spin-0 radion and the spin-2 bulk graviton that arise in warped extradimensional models. The limits set are in the range 9.74–0.29 fb and 4.94–0.19 fb for a narrow radion and a graviton, respectively, with masses between 1 and 3 TeV. For a radion and for a bulk graviton with widths 10% of their masses, the limits are in the range 12.5–0.35 fb and 8.23–0.23 fb, respectively, for the same masses. These limits result in the exclusion of a narrow-width graviton with a mass below 1.2 TeV, and of narrow and 10%-width radions with masses below 2.6, and 2.9 TeV, respectively.

Measurement of the B s 0 → μ + μ - decay properties and search for the B 0 → μ + μ - and B s 0 → μ + μ - γ decays

An improved measurement of the decay $B^0_S$ → $μ^+μ^-$ and searches for the decays $B^0$ → $μ^+μ^+$ and $B^0_S$ → $μ^+μ^-γ$ are performed at the LHCb experiment using data collected in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7, 8 and 13 TeV. corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1, 2 and 6 fb -1 , respectively. The $B^0_S$ → $μ^+μ^-$ branching fraction and effective lifetime are measured to be $\mathscr{B}$($B^0_S$ → $μ^+μ^-$) = (3.09$^{(+0.46+0.15)}_{(-0.43-0.11)}$) x 10 -9 and $τ(B^0_s →μ^+μ^-)$ = (2.07 ± 0.29 ± 0.03) ps, respectively, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. No significant signal for $B^0$ → $μ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_S$ → $μ^+μ^-γ$ decays is found and the upper limits $\mathscr{B}$($B^0$ → $μ^+μ^-$) < 2.6 x 10 -10 and $B^0_S$ → $μ^+μ^-γ$ < 2.0 x 10 -9 at 95% confidence level are determined, where the latter is limited to the range $m_{μμ}$ > 4.9 GeV/c 2 . Additionally, the ratio between the $B^0$ → $μ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_S$ → $μ^+μ^-$ branching fractions is measured to be $\mathscr{R}_{μ+μ-}$ < 0.095 at 95% confidence level. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

Erratum to: Search for the HH → $ b\overline{b}b\overline{b} $ process via vector-boson fusion production using proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

One correction is noted for the paper. A wrong cross-section was used for the theory prediction in figure 6 due to not taking into account the VHH contamination properly in the rescaling formula for the signal samples. The change in the theory prediction leads to stricter exclusion limits on the di-vector-boson–di-Higgs-boson coupling modifier κ 2V . The observed excluded region corresponds to κ 2V < –0.43 and κ 2V > 2.56, while the expected exclusion is κ 2V < –0.55 and κ 2V > 2.72. Erratum JHEP 01 (2021) 145 fixed the description in the text but contains the uncorrected figure. The correct figure is shown in the new erratum.

Search for resonant pair production of Higgs bosons in the b b ¯ b b ¯ final state using p p collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for resonant Higgs boson pair production in the bb¯bb¯ final state is presented. The analysis uses 126 fb -1 -139 fb -1 of pp collision data at √s=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is divided into two channels, targeting Higgs boson decays which are reconstructed as pairs of small-radius jets or as individual large-radius jets. Spin-0 and spin-2 benchmark signal models are considered, both of which correspond to resonant HH production via gluon-gluon fusion. The data are consistent with Standard Model predictions. Upper limits are set on the production cross section times branching ratio to Higgs boson pairs of a new resonance in the mass range from 251 GeV to 5 TeV.

Defect chemistry of Cr-B binary and Cr-Al-B MAB phases: Effects of covalently bonded B networks

Transition metal borides, which are three-dimensional (3D) layered materials containing covalently bonded B networks, have shown a number of excellent properties, such as radiation resistance and the ability to act as a diffusion barrier in integrated circuits. However, defect behavior, which controls many of the materials’ properties, has remained unknown in these materials. In this work, we investigate the effects of the B networks on the defect chemistry in both binary borides (CrB, Cr 3 B 4 , Cr 2 B 3 ) and ternary MAB phases (Cr 2 AlB 2 , Cr 3 AlB 4 , Cr 4 AlB 6 ) using first-principles calculations. We find that increasing the number of B rings in the structure leads to lower formation energies and higher concentrations of Frenkel pairs. The results can be explained by the fact that the strongest Cr-B bond is weakened when borides have more B rings, leading to a reduction in the formation energy of Cr and B vacancies. Also, the bonds associated with Cr atoms bonded within B rings are softer in structures containing more B rings, which allows Cr interstitials to form with a lower energy cost and contributes to an increase in the concentration of Cr interstitials.

Study of Λ b 0 and Ξ b 0 Decays to Λ h + h ′ − and Evidence for C P Violation in Λ b 0 → Λ K + K − Decays

A study of Λ b 0 and Ξ b 0 decays to Λ h + h ′ − ( h ( ′ ) = π , K ) is performed using p p collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Runs 1–2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 . The branching fractions for these decays are measured using the Λ b 0 → Λ c + ( → Λ π + ) π − decay as a control channel. The decays Λ b 0 → Λ π + π − and Ξ b 0 → Λ K − π + are observed for the first time. For decay modes with sufficient signal yields, C P asymmetries are measured in the full and localized regions of the final-state phase space. Evidence is found for C P violation in the Λ b 0 → Λ K + K − decay, interpreted as originating primarily from an asymmetric Λ b 0 → N * + K − decay amplitude. The measured C P asymmetries for other decays are compatible with zero. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Search for pair production of boosted Higgs bosons via vector-boson fusion in the $b$$\overline{b}$$b$$\overline{b}$ final state using $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for Higgs boson pair production via vector-boson fusion is performed in the Lorentz-boosted regime, where a Higgs boson candidate is reconstructed as a single large-radius jet, using 140 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Only Higgs boson decays into bottom quark pairs are considered. The search is particularly sensitive to the quartic coupling between two vector bosons and two Higgs bosons relative to its Standard Model prediction, K 2V . This study constrains K 2V to 0.55 < K 2V < 1.49 at the 95% confidence level. The value K 2V = 0 is excluded with a significance of 3.8 standard deviations with other Higgs boson couplings fixed to their Standard Model values. A search for new heavy spin-0 resonances that would mediate Higgs boson pair production via vector-boson fusion is carried out in the mass range of 1–5 TeV for the first time under several model and decay-width assumptions. No significant deviation from the Standard Model hypothesis is observed and exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are derived.
