Theoretical and experimental studies in ultraviolet solar physics

The processes and parameters in atomic and molecular physics that are relevant to solar physics are investigated. The areas covered include: (1) measurement of atomic and molecular parameters that contribute to discrete and continous sources of opacity and abundance determinations in the sun; (2) line broadening and scattering phenomena; and (3) development of an ion beam spectroscopic source which is used for the measurement of electron excitation cross sections of transition region and coronal ions.

Research Investigation Directed Toward Extending the Useful Range of the Electromagnetic Spectrum

The report discusses completed and proposed research in atomic and molecular physics conducted at the Columbia Radiation Laboratory from July 1972 to June 1973. Central topics described include the atomic spectra and electronic structure of alkali metals and helium, molecular microwave spectroscopy, the resonance physics of photon echoes in some solid state systems (including Raman echoes, superradiance, and two photon absorption), and liquid helium superfluidity.

THEORETICAL STUDY OF ATOMIC AND MOLECULAR GASES AND THEIR REACTIONS IN THE UPPER ATMOSPHERE. SUMMARY OF WORK DONE IN THE PERIOD NOV. 1, 1960 TO APR. 30, 1961

In the previous report it was stated that the major mathematical problems of computations were nearly solved and an attempt is being made to start application of "Tables of Integrals" to the computation of the different states of atoms and molecules. In this respect I like to report that the computation of a number of states of atoms and molecules has been carried out. The results are so far confined only to the equilibrium distance of molecules. We are extending the calculation to other distances so as to compute potential energy curves of different states of molecules. We are also developing Thomas Fermi Statistical model of the atom to verify our results of more accurate calculation. The results so far have been very encouraging and I hope to report some of these results in the next paper.

Physics in perspective. Volume 2, part A: The core subfields of physics

Panel reports to the Survey Committee are presented to provide detailed technical background and documentation for committee findings, and to indicate the vitality and strength of the subfields of physics. Included are the core subfields of acoustics, optics, condensed matter, plasmas and fluids, atomic molecular and electron physics, nuclear physics, and elementary particle physics.

Low-energy auroral electrons

A measurement of the low-energy auroral electron flux distribution between 0.5 and 80 eV reveals structure between 0.5 and 10.0 eV. The structure is due to the thermal electron Maxwellian distribution and electron energy loss to thermal electrons, molecular nitrogen, and atomic oxygen. Some physical process in the auroral plasma causes the deduced loss function to differ from theory. Reasonable agreement is obtained between calculated and measured N2 second positive emission.

The aeronomy story: A memoir

Research in atmospheric physics leading to the identification of the metastable states of nitrogen is described. These forbidden nitrogen atomic molecular radiations were then identified in auroral spectra.

Model atmospheres for cool stars

This report contains an extensive series of model atmospheres for cool stars having a wide range in chemical composition. Model atmospheres (temperature, pressure, density, etc.) are tabulated, along with emergent energy flux distributions, limb darkening, and information on convection for selected models. The models are calculated under the usual assumptions of hydrostatic equilibrium, constancy of total energy flux (including transport both by radiation and convection) and local thermodynamic equilibrium. Some molecular and atomic line opacity is accounted for as a straight mean. While cool star atmospheres are regimes of complicated physical conditions, and these atmospheres are necessarily approximate, they should be useful for a number of kinds of spectral and atmospheric analysis.

Copernicus observations of distant unreddened stars. II - Line of sight to HD 50896

Copernicus UV data on interstellar lines toward HD 50896, a Wolf-Rayet star, are analyzed to study abundances and physical conditions in the line of sight. About 20% of the low-velocity neutral gas is contained in a dense cloud with 10% to 50% of its hydrogen in molecular form; the atomic abundances show typical interstellar depletions. The low-velocity H II gas may be associated with the high ionizing flux of the Wolf-Rayet star or with H II regions along the line of sight. Si III exhibits strong absorption shortward of the low-velocity H II gas, characteristic of a collisionally ionized component at 30,000 to 80,000 K; the possible connections with an unobserved supernova remnant or stellar mass loss are discussed. High-velocity features at 78 and -96 km/sec, in which Fe and Si are near their cosmic abundances, are also indicative of strong shocks.
