GPU-Based Static Data-Flow Analysis for Fast and Scalable Android App Vetting

Many popular vetting tools for Android applications use static code analysis techniques. In particular, Interprocedural Data-Flow Graph (IDFG) construction is the computation at the core of Android static data-flow analysis and consumes most of the analysis time. Many analysis tools use a worklist algorithm, an iterative fixed-point approach, to construct the IDFG. In this paper, we observe that a straightforward GPU parallelization of the worklist algorithm leads to significant underutilization of the GPU resources. We identify four performance bottlenecks, namely, frequent dynamic memory allocations, high branch divergence, workload imbalance, and irregular memory access patterns. Accordingly, we propose GDroid, a GPU-based worklist algorithm implementation with multiple fine-grained optimizations tailored to common characteristics of Android applications. The optimizations considered are: matrix-based data structure, memory access-based node grouping, and worklist merging. Our experimental evaluation, performed on 1000 Android applications, shows that the proposed optimizations are beneficial to performance, and GDroid can achieve up to 128X speedups against a plain GPU implementation.

Emulating the Android Boot Process

Critical vulnerabilities continue to be discovered in the boot process of Android smartphones used around the world. The entire device's security is compromised if boot security is compromised, so any weakness presents undue risk to users. Vulnerabilities persist, in part, because independent security analysts lack access and appropriate tools. In response to this gap, we implemented a procedure for emulating the early phase of the Android boot process. This work demonstrated feasibility and utility of emulation in this space. By using HALucinator, we derived execution context and data flow, as well as incorporated peripheral hardware behavior. While smartphones with shared processors have substantial code overlap regardless of vendor, generational changes can have a significant impact. By applying our approach to older and modern devices, we learned interesting characteristics about the system. Such capabilities introduce new levels of introspection and operation understanding not previously available to mobile researchers.

Radiation Detection System Integration Using Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Radios

This study describes the application development of multiple-input multiple-output radios to provide persistent mobile ad hoc network (MANET) for the Department of Homeland Security. By using Man Portable Unit (MPU5) fifth generation radios (manufactured by Persistent Systems) with the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK), an Android smartphone geospatial infrastructure and military situational awareness application, the Remote Sensing Laboratory has developed a MANET connectivity to monitor deployed nuclear/radiological search operation assets.

DataShare Recon Assistant Tool (DSRAT) v.1.0.x

SAND2023-06798O DataShare Recon Assistant Tool (DSRAT) software is used for capturing recon data and information in an emergency response situation on an Android device. Users can capture images, video, item description and spectra information in DSRAT and upload it to DataShare, which is a multi-server application that shares data in real-time to all nodes on the network. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.
