Materials Data on AlWC by Materials Project

WAlC crystallizes in the orthorhombic Pmm2 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. W is bonded in a distorted rectangular see-saw-like geometry to two equivalent Al and two equivalent C atoms. Both W–Al bond lengths are 2.83 Å. Both W–C bond lengths are 2.07 Å. Al is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to two equivalent W and four equivalent C atoms. All Al–C bond lengths are 2.20 Å. C is bonded to two equivalent W and four equivalent Al atoms to form a mixture of distorted corner, edge, and face-sharing CAl4W2 pentagonal pyramids.

Aerosol Thermodynamics (Aerosol Liquid Water Concentration and Aerosol pH) at S2 during CoURAGE

These data report aerosol liquid water content (ALWC) and aerosol pH for the S2 (Mt. Airy) site during CoURAGE for April - June 2025. The ISORROPIA-II aerosol thermodynamic equilibrium model was used to compute ALWC and pH. The model was run in forward mode, with solids formation disabled (metastable mode), according to Pye et al. (Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2020). Information about the model can be found at https://www.epfl.ch/labs/lapi/models-and-software/isorropia/, and in Fountoukis and Nenes (Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2007). Inputs to the model were: (1) measured Temperature and relative humidity, both from the DoE ARM “metwxt” data products at S2, (2) aerosol chemical composition from the ARM ACSM, and (3) gas-phase ammonia concentrations. For ISORROPIA-II, ambient RH values above 0.995 were input to the model as 0.995; therefore, caution should be exercised interpreting ALWC when RH was above 0.995. Aerosol composition or NH3(g) concentrations below the LOD were input into the model as 0.5*LOD. Model runs were only conducted for data points at 30-min resolution with all three inputs (meteorology, ACSM, and NH3). If any of the three model inputs were missing, aerosol thermodynamic outputs are flagged as -999. Similarly, aerosol thermodynamic outputs are flagged as -999 if measured NH3(g) and aerosol ammonium (NH4+) were simultaneously below the respective LODs. The ALWC includes liquid water from inorganic aerosol components, calculated directly by ISORROPIA-II, as well as liquid water from organics, estimated from the ACSM organics assuming a kappa value of 0.12 according to Guo et al. (Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2015).

Secondary Inorganic Aerosol Chemistry and Its Impact on Atmospheric Visibility Over an Ammonia-Rich Urban Area in Central Taiwan

This study investigated the hourly inorganic aerosol chemistry and its impact on atmospheric visibility over an urban area in Central Taiwan, by relying on measurements of aerosol light extinction, inorganic gases, and PM 2.5 water-soluble ions (WSIs), and simulations from a thermodynamic equilibrium model. On average, the sulfate (SO 4 2− ), nitrate (NO 3 − ), and ammonium (NH 4 + ) components (SNA) contributed ∼90% of WSI concentrations, which in turn made up about 50% of the PM 2.5 mass. During the entire observation period, PM 2.5 and SNA concentrations, aerosol pH, aerosol liquid water content (ALWC), and sulfur and nitrogen conversion ratios all increased with decreasing visibility. In particular, the NO 3 − contribution to PM 2.5 increased, whereas the SO 4 2− contribution decreased, with decreasing visibility. The diurnal variations of the above parameters indicate that the interaction and likely mutual promotion between NO 3 − and ALWC enhanced the hygroscopicity and aqueous-phase reactions conducive for NO 3 − formation, thus led to severely impaired visibility. The high relative humidity (RH) at the study area (average 70.7%) was a necessary but not sole factor leading to enhanced NO 3 − formation, which was more directly associated with elevated ALWC and aerosol pH. Simulations from the thermodynamic model depict that the inorganic aerosol system in the study area was characterized by fully neutralized SO 4 2− (i.e. a saturated factor in visibility reduction) and excess NH 4 + amidst a NH 3 -rich environment. As a result, PM 2.5 composition was most sensitive to gas-phase HNO 3 , and hence NOx, and relatively insensitive to NH 3 . Consequently, a reduction of NOx would result in instantaneous cuts of NO 3 − , PM 2.5 , and ALWC, and hence improved visibility. On the other hand, a substantial amount of NH 3 reduction (>70%) would be required to lower the aerosol pH, driving more than 50% of the particulate phase NO 3 − to the gas phase, thereby making NH 3 a limiting factor in shifting PM 2.5 composition.

Study of an Integration Platform Based on an Adiabatic Active-Layer Waveguide Connection for InP Photonic Device Integration Mirroring That of Heterogeneous Integration on Silicon

In this work, a photonic device integration platform capable of integration of active-passive InP-based photonic devices without the use of material regrowth is introduced. The platform makes use of an adiabatic active-layer waveguide connection (ALWC) to move an optical beam between active and passive devices. The performance of this platform is analyzed using an example made up of four main sections: (1) a fiber coupling section for enabling vertical beam coupling from optical fiber into the photonic chip using a mode-matched surface grating with apodized duty cycles; (2) a transparent waveguide section for realizing passive photonic devices; (3) an adiabatic mode connection structure for moving the optical beam between passive and active device sections; and (4) an active device section for realizing active photonic devices. It is shown that the coupled surface grating, when added with a bottom gold reflector, can achieve a high chip-to-fiber coupling efficiency (CE) of 88.3% at 1550 nm. The adiabatic active-layer mode connection structure has an optical loss of lower than 1% (CE > 99%). The active device section can achieve an optical gain of 20 dB/mm with the use of only 3 quantum wells. The optimized structural parameters of the entire waveguide module are analyzed and discussed.
