A theoretical investigation of the effect of Ga alloying on thermodynamic stability, electronic-structure, and oxidation resistance of Ti 2 AlC MAX phase

We present a systematic investigation of thermodynamic stability, phase-reaction, and chemical activity of Al containing disordered Ti 2 (Al-Ga)C MAX phases using machine-learning driven high-throughput framework to understand the oxidation resistance behavior with increasing temperature and exposure to static oxygen. The A-site (at Al) disordering of Ti 2 AlC with Ga shows significant change in the chemical activity of Al with increasing temperature and exposure to static oxygen, which is expected to enable surface segregation of Al, thereby, the formation of Al 2 O 3 and improved oxidation resistance. We performed in-depth convex hull analysis of ternary Ti-Al-C, Ti-Ga-C, and Ti-Al-Ga-C based MAX phase, and provide detailed contribution arising from electronic, chemical and vibrational entropies. The thermodynamic analysis shows change in the Gibbs formation enthalpy (ΔG form ) at higher temperatures, which implies an interplay of temperature-dependent enthalpy and entropic contributions in oxidation resistance Ga doped Ti 2 AlC MAX phases. A detailed electronic structure and chemical bonding analysis using crystal orbital Hamilton population method reveal the origin of change in phases stability and in oxidation resistance in disorder Ti2(Al 1-x Ga x )C MAX phases. Our electronic structure analysis correlate well with the change in oxidation resistance of Ga doped MAX phases. We believe our study provides a useful guideline to understand to role of alloying on electronic, thermodynamic, and oxidation related mechanisms of bulk MAX phases, which can work as a precursor to understand oxidation behavior of twodimensional MAX phases, i.e., MXenes (transition metal carbides, carbonitrides and nitrides).

Impact of Molten Gallium on the Microstructure and Corrosion Behavior of Aluminum and Uranium-Aluminum Alloys for Used Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing

Test reactors around the world utilize highly enriched uranium fuel to achieve high neutron fluxes for materials testing. Once spent, the remaining uranium is a valuable resource for subsequent fuel fabrication. However, some of these test reactor cores consist of curved plate-type fuel elements, fabricated using aluminum alloy 6061 (AA6061) cladding to encapsulate a uranium-aluminum alloy (UAlx) fuel matrix. These assemblies require non-standard reprocessing approaches for uranium recovery, as aluminum dissolves readily in acidic solutions, generating large volumes of waste and complicating downstream chemical separations. In this work, we investigate a novel chemical decladding strategy based on the interaction between AA6061/UAlx and molten gallium (Ga). Ga is known to induce severe degradation of aluminum metal through liquid metal embrittlement (LME), even at relatively low Ga concentrations. By penetrating the aluminum crystal lattice, Ga disrupts grain cohesion and facilitates fracture or dissolution of the aluminum matrix. Thermodynamic analysis of the Al–Ga binary phase diagram suggests that Ga may offer a viable pathway to selectively weaken or dissolve the AA6061 cladding, and potentially the aluminum component of the UAlx fuel matrix within. To this end, parametric experiments were performed at 50 °C and 100 °C across a range of Al–Ga atomic fractions. At lower Al fractions, the AA6061 was completely molten after 2 hours of exposure to the Ga metal. In contrast, samples with higher Al fractions (0.9 Al, 0.1 Ga) contained residual solids after 2 hours, which were characterized by microstructural examination using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These Al-Ga compositions were also evaluated using FactSage thermodynamic modeling to further elucidate the relationship between phase diagram behavior and LME.

GaAl3 is Uranium Silicide structured and crystallizes in the cubic Pm-3m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Ga is bonded to twelve equivalent Al atoms to form GaAl12 cuboctahedra that share corners with twelve equivalent GaAl12 cuboctahedra, edges with twenty-four equivalent AlAl8Ga4 cuboctahedra, faces with six equivalent GaAl12 cuboctahedra, and faces with twelve equivalent AlAl8Ga4 cuboctahedra. All Ga–Al bond lengths are 2.88 Å. Al is bonded to four equivalent Ga and eight equivalent Al atoms to form AlAl8Ga4 cuboctahedra that share corners with twelve equivalent AlAl8Ga4 cuboctahedra, edges with eight equivalent GaAl12 cuboctahedra, edges with sixteen equivalent AlAl8Ga4 cuboctahedra, faces with four equivalent GaAl12 cuboctahedra, and faces with fourteen equivalent AlAl8Ga4 cuboctahedra. All Al–Al bond lengths are 2.88 Å.
