Experience of developing highly reliable Tuner components (piezo actuators and cold stepper motor actuators) for SRF Linac

The resonance control team at FNAL has led the design of the LCLS-II SRF Linac SRF cavity tuner subsystem. The Linac is expected to operate for over 30 years, and the longevity of the tuner is crucial to the overall reliability of the Linac. When the tuner's design was started, there were no active actuators (stepper and piezo) that could meet the longevity requirements of the Linac. The FNAL resonance control team, in collaboration with industrial partners (Phytron and PI), has developed actuators that have been shown to withstand a cryogenic and insulating vacuum environment for over 100 years in accelerated lifetime tests. Details of actuators design and longevity testing will be presented. Now, practically all (small and large) SRF systems that are under construction around the world are using actuators developed at FNAL. A review of possible actuators improvement will be presented.

Static actuator-sharing algorithm for concurrent control of multiple plasma properties

Simultaneous regulation of multiple properties in next-generation tokamaks like ITER and fusion pilot plant may require the integration of different plasma control algorithms. Such integration requires the conversion of individual controller commands into physical actuator requests while accounting for the coupling between different plasma properties. This work proposes a tokamak and scenario-agnostic actuator-sharing algorithm (ASA) to perform the above-mentioned command-request conversion and, hence, integrate multiple plasma controllers. The proposed algorithm implicitly solves a quadratic programming (QP) problem formulated to account for the saturation limits and the relation between the controller commands and physical actuator requests. Since the constraints arising in the QP program are linear, the proposed ASA is highly computationally efficient and can be implemented in the tokamak plasma control system in real time. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is designed to handle real-time changes in the control objectives and actuators’ availability. Nonlinear simulations carried out using the Control Oriented Transport SIMulator illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in achieving multiple control objectives simultaneously.

Exchangeable Liquid Crystalline Elastomers: Enabling Rapid Processing and Enhanced Actuation Stability through On-Demand Deactivation

Exchangeable liquid crystalline elastomers (xLCEs) bearing dynamic covalent bonds are promising candidates for soft actuators due to their unique capability to adjust both network structure and liquid crystalline (LC) alignment after polymerization. While current xLCEs with low exchange temperatures are convenient for processing, they suffer from issues such as creep and loss of LC alignment during repeated thermal actuation. Herein, we present an effective solution using dynamic anhydride chemistry within a thiol-ene-based xLCE. This approach enables a catalyst-free, low-temperature bond exchange of the xLCE after polymerization, allowing for the adjustment of LC orientation under mild conditions. More importantly, it enables on-demand deactivation of the bond exchange via anhydride hydrolysis, effectively eliminating creep and enhancing actuation stability for over 100 cycles. Furthermore, the hydrolysis process results in the formation of carboxylic acid groups, which can be converted into carboxylates via alkali treatment, thereby providing the xLCE with humidity responsiveness. Finally, these findings highlight the use of dynamic anhydride bonds in the fabrication and optimization of xLCEs with enhanced durability and functionality, which is expected to facilitate significant advancements in their applications in soft actuators and robotics.

Geometry Optimization of Cable-Based Actuation for Small-Scale Model Testing of a Floating Marine Turbine: Preprint

This research aims to apply combined wave and tidal current loads to a small-scale floating marine current turbine in a wave tank, where an actuation system applies hydrodynamic and mooring forces on the hardware based on results from a simulation. We use a real-time hybrid test setup with physical wave forcing from the wave tank and simulated current and mooring forces implemented through a tensioned cable array. For this paper, we developed an optimization algorithm that adjusts the hardware geometry of the cable array to achieve more efficient tension allocation across the cables for the loads that need to be actuated. By adjusting the points where the cables are attached to the floating platform and the angles between the platform and the winches, an optimal cable geometry can be found to minimize tension variations in the lines, maintain the desired pretension, and prevent excessive tensions. We present the optimization problem formulation, the actuation system evaluation approach, and optimization results that show effective cable actuation setups that are being considered for implementation in the wave tank tests.

Advanced silicone materials for soft actuator applications

Soft actuators are at the forefront of the innovation tide in medicine, manufacturing, and aerospace because they are able to mimic the behavior of biological tissue and adapt to complex, unstructured environments. Of all the materials used, silicone-based elastomers have drawn enormous attention since they offer a superb combination of mechanical flexibility, biocompatibility, thermal stability, and long-term durability. In the past few years, there has also been a rapid pace of material evolution, additive manufacturing, and biointegration that has enhanced the performance and applications of silicone-based soft actuators. However, there is no focused and timely review compiling these advances. This review seeks to address that need by critically discussing recent advancements in advanced silicone materials, exploring new fabrication methodologies, and discussing emerging applications that range from wearable devices to implantable robotics. We also present suggestions for directions and the problems which must be addressed in order to further develop the performance and potential of silicone-based soft actuators, justifying the relevance and urgency of this effort.

Tensile Modeling PVC Gels for Electrohydraulic Actuators

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-dibutyl adipate (DBA) gels are a fascinating dielectric elastomer actuator showing promise in soft robotics. When actuated with high voltages, the gel deforms towards the anode. A recent application of PVC gels in electrohydraulic actuators motivates elastic and hyperelastic constitutive relationships for tensile loading modes. PVC gels with plasticizer-to-polymer weight ratios of 2:1, 4:1, 6:1, and 8:1 w/w were evaluated. PVC gels exhibit a linear elastic region up to 25% strain. The elastic modulus decreased with increasing plasticizer content from 288.8 kPa, 56.1 kPa, 24.7 kPa, to 11 kPa. Poisson’s ratio also decreased with increasing plasticizer content from 0.42, 0.43, 0.39, to 0.35. We suggest that the decrease in polymer concentration facilitates a weakly interconnected polymer network susceptible to chain slippage that hinders the network response, thus lowering Poisson’s ratio. Our work suggests that PVC gels can be treated as isotropic and incompressible for large strains and hyperelastic modeling; however, highly plasticized gels tend to act less incompressible at small strains. The power scaling law between the elastic modulus and plasticizer weight ratio showed high agreement, making the elastic modulus deterministic for any plasticizer content. The Neo–Hookean, Mooney–Rivlin, Yeoh, Gent, Ogden, and extended tube hyperelastic constitutive models are investigated. The Yeoh model shows the highest feasibility when evaluated up to 3.5 stretch, showing a maximum normalized root-mean-square-error of 6.85%. Together, these findings establish a constitutive basis for PVC-DBA gels, incorporating small strain elasticity, large strain non-linear behavior, and network analysis while providing suggestive insight into the network structure required for accurately modeling the EPIC.

SPC-71123 Rev 1 MARVEL Control Drum Actuator Torsional Spring

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is developing a microreactor to produce electrical power utilizing a small nuclear core under the Microreactor Application Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) program. This specification defines the requirements for the procurement and factory acceptance testing of the MARVEL control drum actuator torsional spring. The purpose of this specification is to define the requirements to procure the MARVEL control drum actuator torsional spring component and witness a torsional spring rate Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) at the subcontractor’s facility with the contractor present. Any conflict between this specification and referenced Codes and Standards, or any supplementary specifications in the procurement documents requires written clarification from the Contractor prior to proceeding with any work. Any deviation from the procurement documents requires approval by the Contractor with the change request process.

Actuating Liquid Crystals Rapidly and Reversibly by Using Chemical Catalysis

Abstract Microtubules and catalytic motor proteins underlie the microscale actuation of living materials, and they have been used in reconstituted systems to harness chemical energy to drive new states of organization of soft matter (e.g., liquid crystals (LCs)). Such materials, however, are fragile and challenging to translate to technological contexts. Rapid (sub‐second) and reversible changes in the orientations of LCs at room temperature using reactions between gaseous hydrogen and oxygen that are catalyzed by Pd/Au surfaces are reported. Surface chemical analysis and computational chemistry studies confirm that dissociative adsorption of H 2 on the Pd/Au films reduces preadsorbed O and generates 1 ML of adsorbed H, driving nitrile‐containing LCs from a perpendicular to a planar orientation. Subsequent exposure to O 2 leads to oxidation of the adsorbed H, reformation of adsorbed O on the Pd/Au surface, and a return of the LC to its initial orientation. The roles of surface composition and reaction kinetics in determining the LC dynamics are described along with a proof‐of‐concept demonstration of microactuation of beads. These results provide fresh ideas for utilizing chemical energy and catalysis to reversibly actuate functional LCs on the microscale.

An airfoil-based synthetic actuator disk model for wind turbine aerodynamic and structural analysis

Here, this study introduces an airfoil-based refinement technique to enhance the Actuator Disk Model (ADM) for improved wind turbine aerodynamic load prediction and structural simulation in conjunction with Large Eddy Simulations of the wind flow. While ADM offers higher computational efficiency than the more detailed but resource-intensive Actuator Line Model (ALM), it traditionally lacks the resolution needed to capture the localized blade forces accurately. To address this limitation, we introduce a refinement technique that uses airfoil-specific data and employs interpolation-based grid point refinement, achieving ALM-comparable accuracy while preserving ADM's efficiency. Unlike conventional ADM that provides only rotor-disk averaged forces, our synthetic method tracks transient aerodynamic load variations over multiple blade revolutions, allowing us to calculate the distributions of maximum and minimum loads during typical cycles. Applied to the NREL 5 MW reference turbine, our enhanced ADM accurately predicts key aerodynamic parameters (angle of attack, axial velocity, lift, drag, axial and tangential forces along the blades) as well as structural responses (blade tip deflection, maximum stress, and stress concentration). Our results show that the tip deflection ranges from 2.33m (3.69 % of blade length) to 4.28m (6.79 %), with maximum stress concentration occurring near the blade root. This research demonstrates that a refined synthetic ADM approach can serve as a computationally efficient alternative for both aerodynamic analysis and structural simulation of wind turbine blades subjected to realistic wind fields.

High-speed tunable generation of random number distributions using actuated perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions

Perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions (pMTJs) actuated by nanosecond pulses are emerging as promising devices for true random number generation (TRNG) due to their intrinsic stochastic behavior and high throughput. In this work, we demonstrate the tunability and quality of random number distributions generated by pMTJs operating at a frequency of 104 MHz. First, changing the pulse amplitude is used to systematically vary the probability bias. The variance of the resulting bitstreams closely matches the expected binomial distribution, demonstrating consistency with an underlying sequence of Bernoulli trials. Second, the quality of uniform distributions of 8-bit random numbers generated with a probability bias of 0.5 is considered. A reduced chi-square analysis of these data shows that only two XOR operations are sufficient to achieve this distribution with p-values greater than 0.05. Finally, we show that there is a correlation between long-term probability bias variations and pMTJ resistance. These findings suggest that variations in the characteristics of the pMTJ underlie the observed variation of probability bias. In conclusion, our results highlight the potential of stochastically actuated pMTJs for high-speed, tunable TRNG applications, showing the importance of the stability of pMTJ device characteristics in achieving reliable, long-term performance.

High fidelity blade-resolved and actuator line data from a 16 turbine wind farm simulation using ExaWind

This data was generated with the ExaWind code suite (https://github.com/Exawind) as a demonstration of a large, 16 turbine wind farm simulation, calculated using two different levels of fidelity. The lower level of fidelity approach uses an actuator line approach to represent the turbines, and was simulated with AMR-Wind (https://github.com/Exawind/amr-wind/) as the background flow solver, coupled to OpenFAST (https://github.com/OpenFAST/openfast). The higher level of fidelity simulation uses a blade-resolved approach, and is done using AMR-Wind, Nalu-Wind (https://github.com/Exawind/nalu-wind), OpenFAST, and TIOGA (https://github.com/Exawind/tioga). In the blade-resolved simulation, ExaWind couples together a background flow solver, AMR-Wind, and a near-body solver, Nalu-Wind, through an overset technique from the TIOGA application. OpenFAST handles the structural dynamics of the turbine blades and towers, which informs the fluid-structure interaction of the wind turbines with the flow solvers. In the actuator line simulation, a mesh of 295M elements was used for a 5km x 5km domain, and it was simulated using 256 nodes (2048 GPU's) on the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility Frontier supercomputer. For the blade-resolved simulation, 1.5B element mesh was used in the AMR-Wind background 5km x 5km domain, and 16M elements were used for each turbine in the Nalu-Wind domains, for a total of 1.7B elements. This was simulated using 384 nodes on Frontier, with each node using 56 cores for Nalu-Wind and 8 GPU cores. The data in this archive includes the turbine outputs from OpenFAST, 2D sampling planes from AMR-Wind, and full-field solution files from AMR-Wind and Nalu-Wind.

Ternary molecular switching in a single-crystal optical actuator with correlated crystal strain

A growing portfolio of single-crystal optical actuators is forging a new class of photonic materials that hold prospects for quantum technologies. Ruthenium-based complexes that exhibit this phenomenon via SO 2 -linkage photoisomerisation are of particular interest since they display multiple metastable states, once induced by green light; yet, complete photoconversion into each SO 2 -isomeric state is rarely achieved. We discover a new complex, trans-[Ru(SO 2 )(NH 3 ) 4 (4-bromopyridine)]tosylate 2 , that produces 100% photoconverted η 1 -OSO isomeric crystal structures at 90 K, which fully transition into η 2 -(OS)O photoisomers upon warming to 100 K, while the dark-state η 1 -SO 2 structure is wholly recovered by heating the crystal to room temperature. Crystal structures and optical-absorption profiles of each state are captured via in-situ light-induced single-crystal X-ray diffraction and optical-absorption spectroscopy. Results show that both photoisomeric species behave as optical switches, but with distinct optical properties. The photoisomerisation process causes thermally-reversible micro- and nanoscopic crystal strain, as characterised by optical microscopy and in-situ light-induced atomic-force microscopy.

Preliminary Design of Ironless Linear Induction Motors for ITER MSE Shutter Actuators

In this article, the shutters need to be closed or opened during the operation and calibration period time for the fusion diagnostic systems, such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) motional stark effect (MSE). Standard electric motors and actuators will not work in a strong magnetic field environment due to the presence of the magnetic field of fusion reactors. The innovative linear induction motor (LIM) with an ironless feature overcomes this kind of challenge and can be used for any application that requires controlled motion with a large stroke in the magnetic field environment. It consists of a high-electrical conductivity plate like copper and three-phase motor windings with nonferrous or stainless-steel stators. The conductor plate attached with the shutter is simply driven by the underneath three-phase linear windings to achieve linear motion. The motor drive can be controlled remotely by a controller using the electrical connection, so no sensitive electronic components are located in the harsh environment where the motor itself is located. The design requirements and test facility have been described. Several 3-D transient Maxwell electromagnetic (EM) models with different locations of three-phase linear motor windings and shutter stators have been analyzed and evolved to meet any applications allowed in the harsh environment inside the vacuum vessel of fusion reactors. The preliminary design results are presented in this article.

Implementation and Validation of a Generalized Actuator Disk Parameterization for Wind Turbine Simulations Within the FastEddy Model

ABSTRACT Fast and accurate large‐eddy simulation (LES) of the atmospheric boundary layer plays a crucial role in advancing wind energy research. Long‐duration wind farm studies at turbine‐resolving scales have become increasingly important to understand the intricate interactions between large wind farms and the atmospheric boundary layer. However, the prohibitive computational cost of these turbulence‐ and turbine‐resolving simulations has precluded such modeling to be exercised on a regular basis. To that end, we implement and validate the generalized actuator disk (GAD) model in the computationally efficient, graphics processing unit (GPU)–resident, LES model FastEddy. We perform single‐turbine simulations under three atmospheric stabilities (neutral, unstable, and stable) and compare them against observations from the Scaled Wind Farm Technology (SWiFT) facility and other LES codes from the recent Wakebench turbine wake model benchmark. Our idealized LES results agree well with observed wake velocity deficit and downstream recovery across stability regimes. Turbine response in terms of rotational speed, generated power, torque, and thrust coefficient are well predicted across stability regimes and are consistent with the LES results from the benchmark. The FastEddy simulations are found to be at least two orders of magnitude more efficient than the traditional CPU‐based LES models, opening the door for realistic LES simulations of full wind plants as a viable standard practice.

Enhancing actuation control in monolithic liquid crystal elastomer films with dual heat and light responsiveness

This study presents a dual heat and light-responsive monolithic liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) film designed to enhance actuation control. The LCE films were capable of various motion types, including curvature reversal, oscillation, and sustainable flipping. By incorporating an azobenzene compound, the films exhibited additional functionalities such as enhanced curvature reversal, accelerated oscillation, and the ability to lock continuous flipping motion upon light stimulation. Furthermore, by adjusting the aspect ratio (AR) of a single film, different thermal motion states were realized, demonstrating the flexibility of this approach. Observations using an NIR camera confirmed temperature fluctuations corresponding to thermal exchange, and the influence of UV light on motion regulation was quantitatively analyzed. In conclusion, the ability to regulate motion through dual stimuli paves the way for improved dynamic motion control and thermal management in advanced robotic applications.

Piezoelectrically actuated silicon-nitride-based high-speed spatial light modulator

Advancements in light modulator technology have been driving discoveries and progress across various fields. The problem of large-scale coherent optical control of atomic quantum systems—including cold atoms, ions, and solid-state color centers—presents among the most stringent requirements. This motivates a new generation of high-speed large-scale modulator technology operating in the visible to near-infrared wavelength range. We introduce a scalable modulator technology based on piezoelectrically actuated silicon nitride resonant waveguide gratings fabricated on 200 mm diameter silicon wafers with CMOS-compatible processes. We present a proof-of-concept device with 4 × 4 individually addressable 50 μ m × 50 μ m pixels or channels, each containing a resonant waveguide grating with a ~ 780 nm design wavelength, supporting > 100 MHz modulation speeds, and a spectral response with > 20 dB extinction.

Spatially programmed alignment and actuation in printed liquid crystal elastomers

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) exhibit reversible shape morphing behavior when cycled above their nematic-to-isotropic transition temperature. During extrusion-based 3D printing, LCE inks are subjected to coupled shear and extensional flows that can be harnessed to spatially control the alignment of their nematic director along prescribed print paths. Here, we combine experiment and modeling to elucidate the effects of ink composition, nozzle geometry, and printing parameters on director alignment. From rheological measurements, we quantify the dimensionless Weissenberg number ( Wi ) for the flow field each ink experiences as a function of printing conditions and demonstrate that Wi is a strong predictor of LCE alignment. We find that director alignment in LCE filaments printed through a tapered nozzle varies radially when Wi < 1, while it is uniform when Wi ≫ 1. Based on COMSOL simulations and in operando X-ray measurements, we show that LCE inks printed through nozzles with an internal hyperbolic geometry exhibit a more uniform director alignment for a given Wi compared to those through tapered nozzles. Concomitantly, the stiffness along the print direction and actuation strain of printed LCEs increases substantially under such conditions. By varying Wi during printing through adjusting the flow rate “on the fly”, LCE architectures with uniform composition, yet locally encoded shape morphing transitions can be realized.

Center for Integrated Simulation of Fusion Relevant RF Actuators

This project was part of the “Center for Integrated Simulation of Fusion Relevant RF Actuators” SciDAC-4 project, led by Dr. Paul Bonoli (MIT). Rather than use an acronym (CISFRRFA), the project will be referred to in this document as the “RF-SciDAC4”. The larger SciDAC-4 project goals were to: 1. Develop an integrated simulation of the antenna + sheath + scrape-off-layer + core plasma system which fully utilizes leadership class computing resources to move towards a quantitative predictive capability for the response to RF power. 2. Work closely with the SciDAC-4 Whole Device Modeling (WDM) community to make both our new code development efforts, as well as the established hierarchy of RF tools, available within their environment, and to utilize WDM technologies to implement the couplings below. 3. Validate this predictive capability on appropriately diagnosed experiments including dedicated RF test stands, linear devices, and existing tokamaks. 4. Use these tools to inform design of robust, impurity-mitigating RF heating and current drive sources for future fusion devices.
