Data transfer acceleration

Data transfer acceleration includes receiving, by a data transfer accelerator in a first node of a plurality of nodes, from a second node of the plurality of nodes, a request for data in a second state, wherein the second node stores an instance of the data in a first state; generating a message including one or more operations to transform the data from the first state to the second state; and sending the message to the second node in response to the request.

Accelerated Data Analytics for Power-System Time-Series (ADAPT) [Final Project Report]

Over the past decade, electric utilities have made significant progress in deploying networks of phasor measurement units (PMUs). The high-speed measurements provided by PMUs are valuable for offline analysis, but the sheer volume of data presents a challenge for utilities. The Accelerated Data Analytics for Power-System Time-Series (ADAPT) project was created to address this challenge by developing SciSync, an open-source software tool that enables utilities to rapidly read, process, analyze, and review grid measurements. SciSync was designed to provide the capabilities of Archive Walker, a research tool developed by PNNL, along with the reliability and performance of commercial-grade software.

A deep learning-accelerated data assimilation and forecasting workflow for commercial-scale geologic carbon storage

Fast assimilation of monitoring data to update forecasts of pressure buildup and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) plume migration under geologic uncertainties is a challenging problem in geologic carbon storage. The high computational cost of data assimilation with a high-dimensional parameter space impedes fast decision-making for commercial-scale reservoir management. We propose to leverage physical understandings of porous medium flow behavior with deep learning techniques to develop a fast data assimilation-reservoir response forecasting workflow. Applying an Ensemble Smoother Multiple Data Assimilation (ES-MDA) framework, the workflow updates geologic properties and predicts reservoir performance with quantified uncertainty from pressure history and CO 2 plumes interpreted through seismic inversion. As the most computationally expensive component in such a workflow is reservoir simulation, we developed surrogate models to predict dynamic pressure and CO 2 plume extents under multi-well injection. The surrogate models employ deep convolutional neural networks, specifically, a wide residual network and a residual U-Net. The workflow is validated against a flat threedimensional reservoir model representative of a clastic shelf depositional environment. Intelligent treatments are applied to bridge between quantities in a true-3D reservoir model and those in a single-layer reservoir model. The workflow can complete history matching and reservoir forecasting with uncertainty quantification in less than one hour on a mainstream personal workstation.

Accelerating data acquisition with FPGA-based edge machine learning: a case study with LCLS-II

New scientific experiments and instruments generate vast amounts of data that need to be transferred for storage or further processing, often overwhelming traditional systems. Edge machine learning (EdgeML) addresses this challenge by integrating machine learning (ML) algorithms with edge computing, enabling real-time data processing directly at the point of data generation. EdgeML is particularly beneficial for environments where immediate decisions are required, or where bandwidth and storage are limited. In this paper, we demonstrate a high-speed configurable ML model in a fully customizable EdgeML system using a field programmable gate array (FPGA). Our demonstration focuses on an angular array of electron spectrometers, referred to as the ‘CookieBox,’ developed for the Linac Coherent Light Source II project. The EdgeML system captures 51.2 Gbps from a 6.4 GS s −1 analog to digital converter and is designed to integrate data pre-processing and ML inside an FPGA. Our implementation achieves an inference latency of 0.2 µs for the ML model, and a total latency of 0.4 µs for the complete EdgeML system, which includes pre-processing, data transmission, digitization, and ML inference. The modular design of the system allows it to be adapted for other instrumentation applications requiring low-latency data processing.

A Workflow for Accelerating Multimodal Data Collection for Electrodeposited Films

Abstract Future machine learning strategies for materials process optimization will likely replace human capital-intensive artisan research with autonomous and/or accelerated approaches. Such automation enables accelerated multimodal characterization that simultaneously minimizes human errors, lowers costs, enhances statistical sampling, and allows scientists to allocate their time to critical thinking instead of repetitive manual tasks. Previous acceleration efforts to synthesize and evaluate materials have often employed elaborate robotic self-driving laboratories or used specialized strategies that are difficult to generalize. Herein we describe an implemented workflow for accelerating the multimodal characterization of a combinatorial set of 915 electroplated Ni and Ni–Fe thin films resulting in a data cube with over 160,000 individual data files. Our acceleration strategies do not require manufacturing-scale resources and are thus amenable to typical materials research facilities in academic, government, or commercial laboratories. The workflow demonstrated the acceleration of six characterization modalities: optical microscopy, laser profilometry, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, nanoindentation, and tribological (friction and wear) testing, each with speedup factors ranging from 13–46x. In addition, automated data upload to a repository using FAIR data principles was accelerated by 64x.

SolarAPP+ Performance Review: 2021 Data

Accelerating rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) deployment has strained the capacity of local authorities responsible for permitting, inspection, and interconnection (PII). Given the ongoing expansion of rooftop PV, a growing number of authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) and utilities are reforming PII processes to reduce delays. AHJs could significantly reduce PII timelines through reforms such as expedited reviews for small-scale systems, online customer portals, and over-the-counter permitting. However, independent reforms do not resolve issues associated with PII variability across AHJs, and many AHJs lack the resources to implement reforms. In response to these challenges, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) developed the Solar Automated Permit Processing Plus (SolarAPP+) platform, in collaboration with local governments, code development organizations, and industry stakeholders. This report shows SolarAPP+ performance in 2021 across AHJs.

ESnet-JLab FPGA Accelerated Transport (data plane) [EJFAT (udplb)] v1.0

The ESnet-JLab FPGA Accelerated Transport system is a solution for streaming high-speed scientific measurement data from Data Acquisition Systems (DAQs) to high-performance computing facilties. It is generally compatible with many science workflows, and makes no assumptions about the specifics of any particular experiment. This program (udplb) implements the data plane portion of the EJFAT system. It is an FPGA design that rewrites and forwards data packets from a UDP-based scientific workflow to high-performance compute nodes. It depends on another program (udplbd, disclosed separately) to implement the control system.

Data Challenges for Structural Health Monitoring of Electrical Machines [Slides]

Induction motors (ID) consist of a stator and a rotor. Induction motor slip decreases with decreasing load. Induction motor slip decreases with decreasing load. This talk will focus on removing closely coupled power grid frequencies in an effort to observe the true dynamic response signature of induction motors. Using the time difference between the zeros, we found the frequency as it changes over time for each of the 3 phases. The frequencies of the 3 phases were averaged to reduce the effects of sidebands on the instantaneous frequency. The frequencies of the 3 phases were averaged to reduce the effects of sidebands on the instantaneous frequency. The Kalman filter rapidly synchronizes with the expected output. The sidebands were recreated using spectral subtraction. The frequency domain shows the reduction in magnitude of the power grid frequency the Kalman output was subtracted out. Kalman filtering also reveals important data about the sidebands in healthy motors. The Continuous Wavelet Transform is an alternative to a Bandpass IIR filter used in the analysis of the acceleration data. Analysis of the acceleration data reveals 4 sidebands around the slip frequency.

Evaluate data lake design for the accelerator control system

Increasing precision in automation for modern particle accelerators not only creates a requirement to gather data from all devices but also demands scalable and high-performance data infrastructure with the capability of handling vast incoming device data. A well architected data lake is suitable for such a system which integrates real-time data acquisition, transient data caching, and long-term storage. This paper evaluates data lake architecture for an Accelerator Control System (ACS), focusing on two critical components of a data lake, data cache and long-term storage.
