Unified no-scale attractors

We have presented previously a general treatment of Starobinsky-like inflation in no-scale supergravity where the tensor-to-scalar ratio r = 3(1–n s ) 2 , and n s is the tilt of the scalar perturbations. In particular, we have shown how this scenario can be unified with modulus fixing, supersymmetry breaking and a small cosmological constant. In this study we extend these constructions to inflationary models based on generalized no-scale structures. In particular, we consider alternative values of the curvature parameter, α < 1, as may occur if not all the complex Kähler moduli contribute to driving inflation, as well as α > 1, as may occur if complex structure moduli also contribute to driving inflation. In all cases, we combine these α-Starobinsky inflation models with supersymmetry breaking and a present-day cosmological constant, allowing for additional contributions to the vacuum energy from stages of gauge symmetry breaking.

Exact solutions and attractors of higher-order viscous fluid dynamics for Bjorken flow

We consider causal higher order theories of relativistic viscous hydrodynamics in the limit of one-dimensional boost-invariant expansion and study the associated dynamical attractor. We obtain evolution equations for the inverse Reynolds number as a function of Knudsen number. The solutions of these equations exhibit attractor behavior which we analyze in terms of Lyapunov exponents using several different techniques. We compare the attractors of the second-order Müller-Israel-Stewart (MIS), transient Denicol-Niemi-Molnar-Rischke (DNMR), and third-order theories with the exact solution of the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation-time approximation. It is shown that for Bjorken flow the third-order theory provides a better approximation to the exact kinetic theory attractor than both MIS and DNMR theories. For three different choices of the time dependence of the shear relaxation rate we find analytical solutions for the energy density and shear stress and use these to study the attractors analytically. By studying these analytical solutions at both small and large Knudsen numbers we characterize and uniquely determine the attractors and Lyapunov exponents. While for small Knudsen numbers the approach to the attractor is exponential, strong power-law decay of deviations from the attractor and rapid loss of initial state memory are found even for large Knudsen numbers. Implications for the applicability of hydrodynamics in far-off-equilibrium situations are discussed.

Data-Driven Exploration of Climate Attractor Manifolds For Long-Term Predictability

Focal Area: This white paper responds to Focal Area 3. We seek to gain insight into decadal-scale climate predictability by applying novel manifold-finding probabilistic AI techniques to the complex data produced by Earth System models (ESMs) such as E3SM. The associated portfolio of research activities leverages DOE’s asset mix of HPC platforms, climate expertise, climate simulation codes, and AI expertise. Science Challenge: Climate and climate models are dynamical systems exhibiting properties that are interpretable through chaos theory. The theory contains an important concept that is relevant to multi-decade-scale climate prediction: a chaotic attractor. While the space containing all the possible states of the Earth’s atmosphere and ocean, the possible weather, is large, the realized states tend to stay near the smaller-dimensioned attractor. This behavior is responsible for the “order behind the irregularity” [1] of climate phenomena. Climate change can be thought of as a change in the properties of the attractor, and predicting the climate over years to decades is equivalent to predicting how those properties will change. To date, the attractor has been a useful conceptual tool, but has not been amenable to direct characterization. A new development is the advent of efficient high-dimensional manifold-finding probabilistic AI techniques, which permit a data-driven characterization of the ESM attractor and its probability distribution over weather states. Such a characterization would result in a natural dimensional reduction — a “non-linear Principal Components Analysis (PCA) adapted to climate simulation data” — leading to important advances in scenario-based long-term climate prediction, long-term prediction of water cycle extremes, ESM verification, inter-model comparison, and process model development.

Exact solution for the non-equilibrium attractor in number-conserving relaxation time approximation

We extend previous studies of the conformal 0+1d kinetic non-equilibrium attractor in relaxation time approximation by enforcing number conservation through the introduction of a dynamical fugacity (chemical potential). We derive two coupled integral equations for the effective temperature and fugacity which are then solved numerically to obtain the exact solution. The resulting solutions exhibit convergence to a unique nonequilibrium attractor when the scaled moments of the distribution function are plotted as a function of the rescaled time w = τ /τeq. This occurs even though the system is out of chemical equilibrium at late times. In addition, compared to the case where number conservation was not imposed, we find that the moments converge to their respective attractors more quickly, particularly for moments with m = 0. Finally, we compare the resulting attractor moments with predictions from different hydrodynamic frameworks.

Non-conformal attractor in boost-invariant plasmas

We study the dissipative evolution of (0+1)-dimensionally expanding media with Bjorken symmetry using the Boltzmann equation for massive particles in relaxation-time approximation. Breaking conformal symmetry by a mass induces a non-zero bulk viscous pressure in the medium. It is shown that even a small mass (in units of the local temperature) drastically modifies the well-known attractor for the shear Reynolds number previously observed in massless systems. For generic nonzero particle mass, neither the shear nor the bulk viscous pressure relax quickly to a non-equilibrium attractor; they approach the hydrodynamic limit only late, at small values of the inverse Reynolds numbers. Only the longitudinal pressure, which is a combination of thermal, shear and bulk viscous pressures, continues to show early approach to a far-off-equilibrium attractor, driven by the rapid longitudinal expansion at early times. Second-order dissipative hydrodynamics based on a gradient expansion around locally isotropic thermal equilibrium fails to reproduce this attractor.

Testing α -attractor quintessential inflation against CMB and low-redshift data

Due to universality and attractor properties, α-attractor quintessential inflation establishes direct relations between inflationary observables such as the scalar tilt n s and the tensor-to-scalar ratio r, and late-time dark energy equation of state parameters w 0 and w a . In this work, we examine three different physically motivated regimes, considering complete freedom in the parameter α, models inspired by supergravity where α takes on values up to α = 7/3, and Starobinsky inflation (α = 1). We investigate the consistency and constraints imposed by Cosmic Microwave Background measurements from the Planck satellite, B-mode polarization data from the BICEP/Keck collaboration, and low-redshift observations. Additionally, we consider small-scale CMB measurements released by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, which give results approaching the Harrison– Zel’dovich spectrum (n s ≈ 1). Here α-attractors lead to an improved fit over $\Lambda$CDM. For the large-scale CMB measurements, α ≳ 2 models can provide equally good fits as $\Lambda$CDM

Resonance three-wave interactions and strange attractor

We report it is shown that the incorporation of linear sink/source terms in the three-wave resonance interaction model results in the time dependence of the wave amplitudes, which could exhibit the properties of a strange attractor. This finding demonstrates that the transition to turbulent dynamics of the waves could be related not only to the coupling of wave triads but also to the establishing of the strange attractor-like dynamics within individual wave triads.

DNA Reaction–Diffusion Attractor Patterns

Abstract Living systems can form and recover complex chemical patterns with precisely sized features in the ranges of tens or hundreds of microns. We show how designed reaction–diffusion processes can likewise produce precise patterns, termed attractor patterns, that reform their precise shape after being perturbed. We use oligonucleotide reaction networks, photolithography, and microfluidic delivery to form precisely controlled attractor patterns and study the responses of these patterns to different localized perturbations. Linear and “hill”‐shaped patterns formed and stabilized into shapes and at time scales consistent with reaction–diffusion models. When patterns were perturbed in particular locations with UV light, they reliably reformed their steady‐state profiles. Recovery also occurred after repeated perturbations. By designing the far‐from‐equilibrium dynamics of a chemical system, this study shows how it is possible to design spatial patterns of molecules that are sustained and regenerated by continually evolving towards a specific steady state configuration.

α-attractor dark energy in view of next-generation cosmological surveys

The α-attractor inflationary models are nowadays favored by CMB Planck observations. Their similarity with canonical quintessence models motivates the exploration of a common framework that explains both inflation and dark energy. Here, we study the expected constraints that next-generation cosmological experiments will be able to impose for the dark energy α-attractor model. We systematically account for the constraining power of SNIa from WFIRST, BAO from DESI and WFIRST, galaxy clustering and shear from LSST and Stage-4 CMB experiments. We assume a tensor-to-scalar ratio, 10 -3 < r < 10 -2 , which permits to explore the wide regime sufficiently close, but distinct, to a cosmological constant, without need of fine tunning the initial value of the field. We find that the combination S4CMB + LSST + SNIa will achieve the best results, improving the FoM by almost an order of magnitude; respect to the S4CMB + BAO + SNIa case. We find this is also true for the FoM of the w 0 -w a parameters. Therefore, future surveys will be uniquely able to probe models connecting early and late cosmic acceleration.

Phenomenology and cosmology of no-scale attractor models of inflation

We have recently proposed attractor models for modulus fixing, inflation, supersymmetry breaking and dark energy based on no-scale supergravity. In this paper we develop phenomenological and cosmological aspects of these no-scale attractor models that underpin their physical applications. We consider models in which inflation is driven by a modulus field (T-type) with supersymmetry broken by a Polonyi field, or a matter field (φ-type) with supersymmetry broken by the modulus field. We derive the possible patterns of soft supersymmetry-breaking terms, which depend in T-type models whether the Polonyi and/or matter fields are twisted or not, and in φ-type models on whether the inflaton and/or other matter fields are twisted or not. In φ-type models, we are able to directly relate the scale of supersymmetry breaking to the inflaton mass. We also discuss cosmological constraints from entropy considerations and the density of dark matter on the mechanism for stabilizing the modulus field via higher-order terms in the no-scale K¨ahler potential.

Double-copy towards supergravity inflation with α-attractor models

A bstract Key to the simplicity of supergravity α -attractor models of inflation are Volkov-Akulov fermions, often in the form of nilpotent superfields. Here we explore the possibility of using the double-copy to construct theories of Dirac-Born-Infeld-Volkov-Akulov (DBIVA) coupled to supergravity. A color-dual bootstrap admits scattering amplitudes involving pions and vectors through five-point tree-level order by order in mass-dimension, but requires the introduction of a Tr( F 3 ) operator. Gauge theories with this operator were recently found to require a tower of higher-derivative operators to be compatible with the duality between color and kinematics. Adjoint-type double-copy construction at its most conservative seems to require the UV completion of DBIVA + pure Poincaré supergravity scattering amplitudes to a family of theories involving DBIVA-like particles coupled to Weyl-Einstein supergravity. We also point out an alternative solution to color-dual gauged pions that allows adjoint double-copy without a tower of higher derivative corrections but at the cost of exchange symmetry between scalars.

Novel features of attractors and transseries in nonconformal Bjorken flows

In this work we investigate the impact of conformal symmetry breaking on hydrodynamization of a far-from-equilibrium fluid. We find a new kind of transseries solutions for the nonconformal hydrodynamic equations of a longitudinal boost invariant expanding plasma. The new transseries solutions unveil a rich physical structure which arises due to the interplay of different physical scales. In the perfect fluid case the nonconformal speed of sound slows down the cooling of the temperature due to the emergence of logarithmic corrections that depends on the mass of the particle. Further, these terms propagate into the perturbative and nonperturbative sectors of the transseries once viscous corrections are included. The logarithmic mass contributions increase the asymptotic value of the Knudsen number while decreasing the damping rate of the transient nonhydrodynamic modes and thus, yielding to an extremely slow hydrodynamization process where flow lines merge to their forward attractor at extremely late times. The early time free streaming expansion is modified and receives logarithmic mass corrections induced by the shear-bulk couplings. The global flow structure and numerical analyses carried out in our work demonstrate the existence of local attraction at early and late times for the shear viscous tensor and bulk viscous pressure.

The attractor flow for AdS 5 black holes in $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 gauged supergravity

We study the flow equations for BPS black holes in $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 five-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to any number of vector multiplets via FI couplings. We develop the Noether-Wald procedure in this context and exhibit the conserved charges as explicit integrals of motion, in the sense that they can be computed at any radius on the rotating spacetime. The boundary conditions needed to solve the first order differential equations are discussed in great detail. We extremize the entropy function that controls the near horizon geometry and give explicit formulae for all geometric variables at their supersymmetric extrema. We have also considered a complexification of the near-horizon variables that elucidates some features of the theory from the near-horizon perspective.

Dynamical attractors in contracting spacetimes dominated by kinetically coupled scalar fields

We present non-perturbative numerical relativity simulations of slowly contracting spacetimes in which the scalar field driving slow contraction is coupled to a second scalar field through an exponential non-linear σ model-type kinetic interaction. These models are important because they can generate a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of super-Hubble density fluctuations fully consistent with cosmic microwave background observations. We show that the non-linear evolution rapidly approaches a homogeneous, isotropic and flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) geometry for a wide range of inhomogeneous and anisotropic initial conditions. Ultimately, we find, the kinetic coupling causes the evolution to deflect away from flat FRW and towards a novel Kasner-like stationary point, but in general this occurs on time scales that are too long to be observationally relevant.
