Assessment of BQ-9000 Biodiesel Properties for 2017

Critical quality parameters from BQ-9000 member companies were analyzed for calendar year 2017. The National Biodiesel Board provided blinded and randomized data sets on 14 critical metrics for biodiesel quality. This report summarizes the results of the parameters and found that overall, biodiesel readily met the ASTM D6751 specification limits in 2017.

Techno-economic and life cycle analyses for a supercritical biodiesel production process from waste cooking oil for a plant located in the Midwest United States

Existing literature lacks detailed techno-economic and environmental life cycle analyses (TEA-LCA) focused on supercritical biodiesel production pathways produced via waste products. Therefore, in this work, the TEA-LCA was conducted to generate supercritical biodiesel from waste cooking oil for plants located in the Midwest region of USA having annual production capacities of 10,600 and 128,000 t using Aspen Plus and GREET softwares. Here, two plant production capacities were chosen to capture the economies of scale impact on biodiesel manufacture cost. In the supercritical process, methanol and propane were used as a cosolvent to synthesize biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO) at 280 °C and 128 bar at a residence time of 8.4 min and a WCO conversion rate of 97%. Economic analysis revealed that the supercritical process was an economically attractive pathway with a 2-year payback period for the 10,600 t/year capacity along with a break-even selling price of $\$$ 2.42/gal of diesel. In case of the larger plant (128,000 t/year capacity), the payback period and the breakeven selling price were considerably lower at values of 0.4 years and $1.31/gal of diesel, respectively, due to economies of scale impact. The generated biodiesel from supercritical process for the both the plant capacities met European (EN14214) and US (ASTM D6751) fuel quality standards while the obtained commercially valuable side product, i.e., glycerol, adhered to a pharmaceutical grade of 99.7%. Cradle to gate life cycle analysis using GREET revealed that supercritical process possessed 17% lower CO2 emissions than alkali-catalyzed process and 4% lower CO2 emissions than the conventional diesel production process. Other biodiesel production pathways in the literature were also compared to the results of the TEA-LCA of supercritical biodiesel production pathway.

Diesel Particulate Filter Durability Performance Comparison Using Metals Doped B20 vs. Conventional Diesel Part I: Accelerated Ash Loading and DPF Performance Evaluation

The project objective was to generate experimental data to evaluate the impact of metals doped B20 on DPF ash loading and performance compared to that of conventional petrodiesel. Accelerated ash loading was conducted on two DPFs - one exposed to regular diesel fuel and the other to B20 containing metal dopants equivalent to 4 ppm B100 total metals (currently total metals are limited to 10 ppm in ASTM D6751, the standard for B100). Periodic performance evaluations were conducted on the DPFs at 10 g/L ash loading intervals. After the evaluations at 30 g/L, the DPF was cleaned with a commercial DPF cleaning machine and another round of DPF evaluations were conducted. A comparison of the effect of ash loading with the two fuels and DPF cleaning is presented. The metals doped B20 fuel resulted in ash that was similar to that deposited when exposed to ULSD (lube oil ash) and exhibited similar ash cleaning removal efficiency. Metals doped B20 resulted in faster ash accumulation within the DPF, as expected, but did not appear to have a negative effect on DPF pressure drop or regeneration rates (up to 30 g/L of ash) or exhibit deleterious physical effects on the DPF substrate.

Statistical Treatise on Critical Biodiesel (B100) Quality Properties in the United States from 2004-2022

The quality of neat biodiesel (B100) is critical for ensuring biodiesel blends used in diesel-powered vehicles do not adversely impact engine performance. In the United States, B100 is required to meet ASTM International's purity and fuel property requirements in D6751, "Standard Specification for Biodiesel Fuel Blend Stock (B100) for Middle Distillate Fuels." Here we review the development of this standard for the different grades of B100. The BQ-9000 program, which currently covers over 90% of U.S. and Canadian production volumes, is also described. Engine and original equipment manufacturers have expressed a desire for credible, third-party data on values of various ASTM B100 properties in the commercial market to inform their efforts to address future emissions and durability requirements. To address this need, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory published data from analysis and testing of monthly samples from BQ-9000 producers from calendar years 2017-2022, resulting in 300-500 data points (i.e., individual fuel samples) per year. These data and a statistical evaluation of properties including the average, mean, standard deviation, and 95th or 5th percentile are presented. The results show very consistent and high-quality B100 produced in this time frame. Additionally, we review the results of earlier quality surveys conducted in the United States between 2004 and 2011, revealing how quality has changed over time in response to ASTM standard revisions, as well as the significant overall improvement in quality for modern biodiesel production.
