Improved PARE (Pressurized Airborne Release Equipment) for ARF (Airborne Release Fraction) and RF (Respirable Fraction) Testing

An improved version of the PARE (Pressurized Airborne Release Equipment) system (Sutter 1983a and Sutter 1983b and Ballinger et al 1987) has been developed for powder venting testing. This effort seeks to improve the accuracy of risk estimation for the venting of pressurized powders and the venting of gases through pressurized powders.

Improved PARE (Pressurized Airborne Release Equipment) for Damage Ratio, Airborne Release Fraction and Respirable Fraction Testing (Version 4)

This paper describes an improved version of the PARE (Pressurized Airborne Release Equipment) system (Sutter 1983a and Sutter 1983b and Ballinger et al 1987) for powder venting testing. This effort seeks to improve the accuracy of risk estimation for the venting of pressurized powders and the venting of gases through pressurized powders. This includes experimental measurement for estimating DR (damage ratio), ARF (airborne release fraction) and RF (respirable fraction) quantities. The present study was performed to address previously indicated problematic factors (i.e. noted gaps) (US DOE 1994).

Hourly Load Profile Dataset for Electric Port Cargo Handling Equipment in the United States

Historically, ports have relied on fossil fuels, particularly diesel, as their primary energy source. Transitioning to electric cargo handling equipment (eCHE) offers a promising solution, as this relatively mature technology eliminates tailpipe emissions, reduces harmful airborne particulates, lowers noise pollution, and supports decarbonization. This study develops an initial estimation of hourly electricity demand for eCHE at the top 25 container ports (by tonnage) in the United States. These datasets, accessible at data.nrel.gov/submissions/281, provide valuable insights into the electricity demand patterns and potential grid impacts associated with widespread eCHE adoption, forming a foundation for future refinement based on stakeholder feedback.

Large Area Airborne Contamination Monitoring

The individual components of a Large Area Airborne Contamination Monitoring (LAACM) system have been demonstrated as functional and the concept of a low-cost, rapidly deployable, and rapidly expandable system has been validated. All components of a previously demonstrated system were re-evaluated. Based on this evaluation, recommendations were made for air collection equipment, scintillating material was synthesized and optimized for application, and improved images were acquired. A preliminary concept of operations was developed, outlining the need for an automated scintillation application system and software for data acquisition and analysis. The work conducted under this program in FY24 has raised the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of the LAACM from TRL 3 to TRL 4.
