AC Transit Fuel Cell Electric Bus Progress Report (Data Period Focus: Jan. 2020 through Dec. 2020) [Slides]

This report presents early results from a deployment of fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs) operated by Alameda Contra-Costa Transit (AC Transit) in the east bay area of California. The ten FCEBs, produced by New Flyer, feature an electric drive propulsion system powered by a Ballard fuel cell system. The project team is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to evaluate the buses in revenue service. The goal of this evaluation is to compare the FCEB performance to that of conventional technology and to track progress over time toward meeting the technical targets set by DOE and the Department of Transportation (DOT). The FCEBs were delivered beginning in late-2019. The data period covers January 2020 through July 2020. NREL collects data on two different baseline bus fleets for comparison: five 2017 model year diesel buses and five 2016 model year diesel hybrid buses.

Degradation of Fuel Cell Membrane Electrode Assemblies from Buses Operated More than 25,000 h

This study investigates the performance losses and degradation of proton-exchange-membrane fuel-cell stacks taken from the Alameda Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) bus system (Alameda and Contra Costa counties, California, United States) that were operated for over 25,000 h. Here, we focus on the origin of differences in electrochemical performance between beginning-of-life (BOL) and end-of-life states as well as diagnostic data acquired during the lifetime of the buses. In doing so, we employ in- and ex- situ characterization methods such as polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray characterization. Uniform degradation of the catalyst layer including Pt agglomeration/migration and electrode thinning was observed in all of the post-teardown measurements compared to BOL materials resulting from years of field operation. Despite these changes, the measured post-teardown performance suggests a sufficient output for the expected load, which indicate factors other than degradation of the membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) are likely responsible for the decommissioning of the stacks. The findings indicate that these MEA materials can enable long lifetime in fuel-cell vehicles, if the MEAs are not subjected to adverse operating conditions. The results also highlight the need for more in-vehicle diagnostics to maximize the lifetime of fuel cell vehicle (FCV) powerplants.

Reversible to irreversible transitions for ac driven skyrmions on periodic substrates

Abstract Using atomistic simulations, we investigate the dynamical behavior of magnetic skyrmions in dimer and trimer molecular crystal arrangements, as well as bipartite lattices at 3/2 and 5/2 fillings, under ac driving over a square array of anisotropy defects. For low ac amplitudes, at all fillings reversible motion appears in which the skyrmions return to their original positions at the end of each ac drive cycle and the diffusion is zero. We also identify two distinct irreversible regimes. The first is a translating regime in which the skyrmions form channels of flow in opposing directions and translate by one substrate lattice constant per ac drive cycle. The translating state appears in the dimer and trimer arrangements, and produces pronounced peaks in the diffusivity in the direction perpendicular to the external drive. For larger ac amplitudes, we find chaotic irreversible motion in which the skyrmions can randomly exchange places with each other over time, producing long-time diffusive behavior both parallel and perpendicular to the ac driving direction.

Photoinduced anomalous Hall effect in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides

A circularly polarized ac pump field illuminated near resonance on two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) produces an anomalous Hall effect in response to a dc bias field. In this work, we develop a theory for this photoinduced anomalous Hall effect in undoped TMDs irradiated by a strong coherent laser field. The strong field renormalizes the equilibrium bands and opens up a dynamical energy gap where single-photon resonance occurs. The resulting photon dressed states, or Floquet states, are treated within the rotating-wave approximation. A quantum kinetic equation approach is developed to study the nonequilibrium density matrix and time-averaged transport currents under the simultaneous influence of the strong ac pump field and the weak dc probe field. Dissipative effects are taken into account in the kinetic equation that captures relaxation and dephasing. The photoinduced longitudinal and Hall conductivities display notable resonant signatures when the pump field frequency reaches the spin-split interband transition energies. Rather than valley polarization, we find that the anomalous Hall current is mainly driven by the intraband response of photon-dressed electron populations near the dynamical gap at both valleys, accompanied by a smaller contribution due to the interband response. In conclusion, these findings highlight the importance of photon-dressed bands and nonequilibrium distribution functions in achieving a proper understanding of the photoinduced anomalous Hall effect in a strong pump field.

Enhancing the Energy Efficiency of Room Air Conditioners in Malaysia: Opportunities and Impact Analysis

The global room air conditioner (AC) market is rapidly transitioning toward variable-speed units, offering significant opportunities for energy-efficient designs and the adoption of low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants. Emerging economies, particularly in regions such as Malaysia, are expected to drive consumer demand for ACs. This report reviews key trends in the Malaysian AC market, including the availability of high-efficient ACs. Currently, variable-speed units account for 30–65% of the market, achieving cooling seasonal performance factor (CSPF) levels of between 5.0 and 6.0. Cost comparisons show that CSPF 5–6-rated, inverter-driven room ACs are competitively priced against lower-efficiency, fixed-speed units.

Dynamics of superconducting qubit relaxation times

Superconducting qubits are a leading candidate for quantum computing but display temporal fluctuations in their energy relaxation times T 1 . This introduces instabilities in multi-qubit device performance. Furthermore, autocorrelation in these time fluctuations introduces challenges for obtaining representative measures of T 1 for process optimization and device screening. These T 1 fluctuations are often attributed to time varying coupling of the qubit to defects, putative two level systems (TLSs). In this work, we develop a technique to probe the spectral and temporal dynamics of T 1 in single junction transmons by repeated T 1 measurements in the frequency vicinity of the bare qubit transition, via the AC-Stark effect. Across 10 qubits, we observe strong correlations between the mean T 1 averaged over approximately nine months and a snapshot of an equally weighted T 1 average over the Stark shifted frequency range. These observations are suggestive of an ergodic-like spectral diffusion of TLSs dominating T 1 , and offer a promising path to more rapid T 1 characterization for device screening and process optimization.

Interplay of structure and magnetism in LuFe 4 ⁢Ge 2 tuned by hydrostatic pressure

Lu⁢Fe 4 ⁢Ge 2 crystallizes in the Zr⁢Fe 4 ⁢Si 2 -type structure, hosting chains of Fe tetrahedra giving rise to geometric frustration and low dimensionality. The compound orders antiferromagnetically at around 36 K accompanied by a simultaneous structural transition from a tetragonal phase to an orthorhombic phase. The hydrostatic pressure dependence of the magnetic and structural transitions is investigated using electrical transport, AC magnetic susceptibility, AC calorimetry, M⁢össbauer, muon-spin relaxation (μ⁢SR), and x-ray-diffraction measurements. External pressure suppresses the first-order transition to the antiferromagnetic phase (AFM1) around 1.8 GPa. The structural transition is largely unaffected by pressure and remains between 30 to 35 K for pressures up to 2 GPa. A second antiferromagnetic phase (AFM2) is observed at higher pressures. The transition from the paramagnetic to the AFM2 phase is of second-order nature and appears to be connected to the structural transition. The magnetic volume fraction obtained from μ⁢SR and M⁢össbauer measurements reveal that the entire sample undergoes magnetic ordering in both magnetic phases. In addition, similar low-temperature muon-precession frequencies in AFM1 and AFM2 phases point at similar ordered moments and magnetic structures in both phases. Our results further indicate enhanced magnetic fluctuations in the pressure-induced AFM2 phase. The experimental observations together with density functional theory calculations suggest that the magnetic- and structural-order parameters in Lu⁢Fe 4 ⁢Ge 2 are linked by magnetic frustration, causing the simultaneous magnetostructural transition.

Possible unconventional surface superconductivity in the half-Heusler compound YPtBi

Here, we report an extensive study of the noncentrosymmetric half-Heusler superconductor YPtBi, revealing an unusual relation between bulk superconductivity and the possible appearance of surface superconductivity on the (111) oriented surface, at temperatures up to three times the bulk transition temperature. Transport measurements confirmed the low carrier density of the material and its bulk superconducting transition, which was also observed in ac susceptibility through mutual inductance (MI) measurements. However, a weak signature of superconductivity in the MI measurements appeared much above the bulk transition temperature, which was further observed in scanning tunneling spectroscopy, pointing to a possible surface superconducting state. Polar Kerr effect measurements suggest that while the bulk superconductor may exhibit an unusual nodal superconducting state, only the surface state breaks time reversal symmetry. Complementary tunneling measurements on LuPtBi are used to establish the observations on YPtBi, while density-functional theory calculations may shed light on the origin of this unusual surface state.

Spatially inhomogeneous superconductivity in UTe 2

The newly discovered superconductor UTe 2 is a strong contender for a topological spin-triplet state wherein a multicomponent order parameter arises from two nearly degenerate superconducting states. A key issue is whether both of these states intrinsically exist at ambient pressure. Through thermal expansion and calorimetry, we show that UTe 2 at ambient conditions exhibits two detectable transitions only in some samples, and the size of the thermal expansion jump at each transition varies when the measurement is performed in different regions of the sample. This result indicates that the two transitions arise from two spatially separated regions that are inhomogeneously mixed throughout the volume of the sample, each with a discrete superconducting transition temperature (T c ). Notably, samples with higher T c only show a single transition at ambient pressure. Above 0.3 GPa, however, two transitions are invariably observed in ac calorimetry. Our results not only point to a nearly vertical line (constant pressure) in the pressure-temperature phase diagram but also provide a consistent scenario for the sample dependence of UTe 2 .

Cooling Egypt: Cost and benefits of room air conditioner efficiency improvement in Egypt

Egypt is one of the largest countries in the Middle East and North Africa region with a population of a total of 106 million (as of July 2022). Increasing urbanization, population growth, and increasing temperatures will likely continue to drive demand for electricity from air conditioning, with corresponding negative impacts on the peak load, air quality, and greenhouse gas emissions from refrigerant use and energy consumption. Since 2003, Egypt has adopted a standards and labeling program for various appliances, and has improved its room air conditioner (RAC) energy efficiency requirements in 2016 and 2017. However, its market is still dominated by inefficient fixed-speed drive (FSD) RACs due to a price-sensitive market. Seasonal metrics such as Cooling Season Performance Factor (CSPF) measure the energy efficiency of FSD and variable-speed drive (VSD) RACs on the same scale. Leading markets, most notably China, have already adopted a new MEPS in 2020 and 2022, which align largely with the United for Efficiency (U4E) Model Regulations Guidelines. India has also adopted a CSPF metric. Both India and China are now experiencing (1) increased demand and consumption of higher efficiency VSD RACs, as well as (2) a corresponding drop in prices from the economies of scale of production of these higher efficiency RACs. Because China is a leading manufacturer in the global air conditioner (AC) market, its adoption of the model U4E regulations have effectively raised the energy efficiency of the ACs in the global market. To achieve the benefits of taking a similar approach to Egypt’s market, we offer the following recommendations: 1. Adopt a common metric to measure the efficiency of both FSD and VSD RACs 2. Raise the stringency of MEPS to the level of the U4E Model Regulation Guidelines 3. Restructure the labeling program from the “A++” labeling scheme to a simpler A through E or a star-rating program 4. Strengthen the compliance regime governing the Egyptian AC MEPS 5. Assist small and medium AC manufacturers in Egypt to transition manufacturing lines to produce low-cost, high-efficiency VSD RACs. Adopting these recommendations would reduce Egypt’s electricity consumption to 11 TWh in 2030 and 89 TWh in 2050—with corresponding carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reductions and avoided generation capacity requirements compared to the baseline.

Unraveling the Molecular Origin of Prey-Wrapping Spider Silk's Unique Mechanical Properties and Assembly Process Using NMR

Prey wrapping spider silk's unique mechanical properties are investigated confirming the silk's high degree of extensibility and superior toughness compared to other types of spider silk. For the first time, the pre-spinning dope phase is studied in isotope-enriched intact aciniform (AC) silk glands using solution NMR that reveals a combination of α-helical domains linked by disordered random coil chains consistent with previously proposed “beads-on-a-string” models. The model is further refined through the AlphaFold2 protein structure prediction tool. Finally, extensive magic angle spinning (MAS) solid-state (SS) NMR data for isotopically-enriched fibers is used to refine the structural model for AC silk from two species, A. aurantia and A. argentata. The SSNMR data shows that the AC silk fibers are highly α-helical, coiled-coil in structure but, also exhibit significant β-sheet components that can be traced back to the Gly-rich disordered linker regions in the pre-spinning dope phase that are converted to β-sheet structures during fiber formation. This combination of mechanical and structural characterization enhances the understanding of AC silk's liquid-to-solid transition and structure-mechanics relationship. In conclusion, these prey wrap silk results and models will provide the basis for the design of biomimetic materials inspired by the AC spider silk system.

Magnetic ac susceptibility of superconducting Ta films for quantum computing

Recently, breakthroughs were reported in the long coherence time (>0.5 ms) transmon qubit using tantalum films (Ta). Identifying the loss mechanism in Ta films will help further improve the performance of Ta-based superconducting qubits. We report a study of superconducting properties in two sets of Ta films grown on c-cut and a-cut sapphires respectively using contact transport and noncontact magnetic ac susceptibility measurements. Although the resistive transition appears to be similar in both films, we found strikingly different responses in their complex magnetic susceptibilities χ' + iχ'$^{'}$ .χ'$^{'}$ in the c-cut films exhibits a sharp peak at superconducting transition Tc and becomes featureless below Tc indicating a strongly coupled superconducting state. In contrast, χ'$^{'}$ \ in the a-cut films exhibits a broad peak near Tc and a second peak appears below Tc, indicating granular superconductivity behavior. This second peak χ'$^{'}$ in is associated with the hysteresis loss at weak-link-type grain boundaries, which is believed to be a leading source of decoherence in the a-cut Ta films. The derived magnetic loss tangent in the a-cut films is about one order of magnitude higher than in the c-cut films. This study demonstrates that ac susceptibility is an excellent probe for characterizing bulk superconducting properties of the constituent superconducting materials used in qubits.

Anomalous Ferromagnetic Behavior in Orthorhombic Li 3 Co 2 SbO 6

Monoclinic Li 3 Co 2 SbO 6 has been proposed as a Kitaev spin liquid candidate and investigated intensively, whereas the properties of its polymorph, the orthorhombic phase, are less known. In this work, we report the magnetic properties of orthorhombic Li 3 Co 2 SbO 6 as revealed by dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, muon spin relaxation (μSR), and neutron diffraction measurements. Successive magnetic transitions at 115, 89, and 71 K were observed in the low-field dc susceptibility measurements. The transitions below T N (115 K) are suppressed at higher applied fields. However, zero-field ac susceptibility measurements reveal distinct frequency-independent transitions at about 114, 107, 97, 79, and 71 K. A long-range magnetic ordered state was confirmed by specific heat, μSR, and neutron diffraction measurements, all indicating a single transition at about 115 K. The discrepancy between different measurements is attributed to possible stacking faults and/or local disorders of the ferromagnetic zigzag chains, resulting in ferromagnetic boundaries within the overall antiferromagnetic matrix.

Benefits and challenges in deployment of low global warming potential R290 refrigerant for room air conditioning equipment in California

High global warming potential gases (“high GWP”) are the fastest growing sector of greenhouse gas emissions in the world and in California and are primarily used as refrigerant gases in refrigeration and cooling equipment. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) refrigerants are the dominant type of high GWP gases with GWP values thousands of times larger than CO 2 on a 100-year timescale. Refrigerant-grade propane (“R290”) has a very low GWP (GWP = 3.3) with good thermodynamic properties and good cooling equipment performance but the flammability of any leaked refrigerant makes equipment design, handling, and maintenance critical factors to manage. This paper focuses on the potential climate benefits and costs of transitioning to R290 refrigerant in small room air conditioning (AC) units, specifically window AC, packaged terminal AC/heat pumps (PTAC/PTHP), and mini-split heat pumps. Overall climate impact for a transition to all three types of air conditioning units in the 2022–2051 timeframe is found to be from 15 to 64 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) savings in California with a cost of saved CO 2 eq that ranges from $14.50 per ton of CO 2 eq saved to -$50.30 per ton of CO 2 eq saved (net savings) depending on whether the baseline refrigerant is R32 or R410A and depending on the relative energy efficiency for R290 units compared to baseline units.

Modification of magnetic ground state in Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 by thermal annealing

In this work, we have investigated the thermal annealing effect on the physical properties of an AlB 2 -type ternary intermetallic compound, Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 , that undergoes spin freezing behaviour coexisting with spatially limited antiferromagnetic phase below 9.9 K in as-cast form. Thermal annealing effect is found to result in considerable changes in the magnetic ground state properties of the system. Though only one magnetic transition around 9.9 K is observed for as-cast compound, the annealed sample exhibits two distinct magnetic transitions; one around T N ~ 13.5 K and another around T f ~ 4 K. The magnetization measurements and zero field neutron diffraction study reveal that the high temperature transition is antiferromagnetic type, though of limited correlation length, while the low temperature transition corresponds to spin freezing behaviour. The ac susceptibility and heat capacity studies also confirm the existence of frustrated cluster glass state at lower temperature than the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. Additionally, ac susceptibility data exhibits signature of an additional peak in the even lower temperature region (at 2.2 K for zero frequency) that tends to shift in opposite direction with frequency in contrast to that observed for conventional glassy transitions. The change in intrinsic local structural disorder of Ni and Si ions associated with annealing has been argued to be responsible for the different magnetic behaviour in as-cast and annealed samples.

Measurement of 227 Ac impurity in 225 Ac using decay energy spectroscopy

225 Ac is a valuable medical radionuclide for targeted $\alpha$ therapy, but 227 Ac is an undesirable byproduct of an accelerator-based synthesis method under investigation. Sufficient detector sensitivity is critical for quantifying the trace impurity of 227 Ac, with the 227 Ac/ 225 Ac activity ratio predicted to be approximately 0.15% by end-of-bombardment (EOB). Superconducting transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters offer high resolution energy spectroscopy using the normal-to-superconducting phase transition to measure small changes in temperature. By embedding 225 Ac production samples in a gold foil thermally coupled to a TES microcalorimeter we can measure the decay energies of the radionuclides embedded with high resolution and 100% detection efficiency. This technique, known as decay energy spectroscopy (DES), collapses several peaks from $\alpha$ decays into single Q-value peaks. In practice there are more complex factors in the interpretation of data using DES, which we will discuss in this paper. Using this technique we measured the EOB 227 Ac impurity to be (0.142 ± 0.005)% for a single production sample. This demonstration has shown that DES is a useful tool for quantitative measurements of complicated spectra.
