Second LDEF Post-Retrieval Symposium Abstracts

These abstracts from the symposium represent the data analysis of the 57 experiments flown on the LDEF. The experiments include materials, coatings, thermal systems, power and propulsion, science, (cosmic ray, interstellar gas, heavy ions, micrometeoroids, etc.), electronics, optics, and life science.

TRTR NRAD NRS Beamline Abstract

The Neutron Radiography (NRAD) Reactor is a 250kW TRIGA housed under the largest hot cell in the United States, making it the foremost location to perform neutron imaging of irradiated nuclear fuels and materials, including those intended for use with advanced reactors. Currently, NRAD has two radial beamlines that are used for neutron radiography and tomography. Upgrades to the North neutron beamline include the replacement of the in-tank beam chamber, through-the-wall collimator, and neutron shutter. These beamline upgrades will not only improve image quality for current capabilities but will also condition the beam to be more suitable for advanced methods such as neutron powder diffraction. These upgrades will increase the excess reactivity of the core, reduce unnecessary activation and exposure to workers, and significantly reduce the amount of shielding required around the beam. This presentation will describe how these upgrades improve beam quality, increase utilization of the reactor, and reduce radiation exposure to personnel.

Improving Marine Energy Production Through Commercialization of a Low Cost, Drag-Reducing Slippery Coating (CRADA 679 Abstract)

Marine energy capture systems offer great promise for providing clean energy, but they operate in a challenging and dynamic environment and must be optimized to the highest extent possible. Computational studies predict that drag reduction on marine energy and blue economy systems will result in meaningful improvements in energy efficiency. Based on extensive coating experience, PNNL is proposing to bring to market a new drag-reducing coating called Superhydrophobic Lubricant-Infused Drag-Efficient Coating – SLIDE-Coat. PNNL has a deep knowledge base regarding this class of slippery coatings, and we have a group of enthusiastic industry partners who have committed to partnering, conducting field testing, and providing well over 50% cost share. In addition to validating the technology, the team will create a commercialization roadmap to ensure the commercial success of the technology after the government-sponsored two-year program is complete. The main technical goal is to design, manufacture, and experimentally validate a new coating that can reduce hydrodynamic skin friction drag by 20%. The main commercialization goal is to develop a roadmap that identifies activities needed to complete SLIDE-Coat’s development after the conclusion of this project. Year 1 will focus on adaptation and modification of the existing SLIC coating system to optimize drag reduction and assessment and quantification of drag reduction on relevant materials in a laboratory setting. Year 2 will focus on optimizing and demonstrating drag reduction with preferred coatings. The manufacturability, ease of application, adhesion to relevant surfaces, and consistency will be assessed. Quantification of drag reduction on prototype materials in a relevant marine field setting will be executed.

Global Characterization of Polygonally Fractured Terrain on Venus and Implications for a Climate Change Origin

On Earth, polygonal fractures with spacings of 1-100 cm form in lava flows that cool slowly under isotropic stress conditions. On Venus, polygonal fractures are observed with typical fracture spacings of 1-2 km, covering regions 10s to 100s of km across. These features have been proposed to form via cooling of lava flows or above subsurface intrusions, or due to surface cooling caused by climate change. A watershed algorithm was modified to search the entire Magellan image database autonomously for terrains with polygonal fractures. Here we characterize the 204 polygon terrains found using this method (including over 170 newly identified regions) with respect to size, morphology, stratigraphy, and geologic setting. These results are used to examine different models of origin.

Reanalysis of the Apollo Cosmic Gamma-Ray Spectrum in the 0.3 to 10 MeV Energy Region

Additional data obtained from the Apollo 16 and Apollo 17 missions, together with collateral calculations on background radiation effects, have made an improved subtraction of unwanted backgrounds from the diffuse cosmic y-ray data previously reported from Apollo 15 possible. As a result, the 1 to 10 MeV spectrum is lowered significantly and connects smoothly with recent data at other energies. The inflection reported previously is much less pronounced and has no more than a 1.5 σ significance. Sky occultation by the Apollo 16 spacecraft shows the bulk of the 0.3 to 1 MeV radiation to be diffuse. The analysis of spurious backgrounds points to important improvements for future experiments designed for this spectral region.

Surface science insight note: A linear algebraic approach to elucidate native films on Fe 3 O 4 surface

Standard materials are often used to obtain spectra that can be compared to those from unknown samples. Spectra measured from these known substances are also used as a means of computing sensitivity factors to allow quantification by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of less well-defined materials. Spectra from known materials also provide line shapes suitable for inclusion in spectral models which, when fitted to spectra, permit the chemical state for a sample to be assessed. Both types of information depend on isolating photoemission signals from the inelastically scattered signal. In this Insight note, technical issues associated with the use of XPS of as received Fe 3 O 4 powder sample surface are discussed. The Insight note is designed to show how linear algebraic techniques applied to data collected from a sample marketed as pure Fe 3 O 4 powder are used to verify that XPS has been performed on chemistry representative of the sample. The methods described in this Insight note can further be utilized in elucidating complex XPS data obtained from thin films formed or evolved during cyclic/non-steady use of complex (electro)catalyst surfaces, especially in the presence of contaminants.
