BPS spectra and 3-manifold invariants

We provide a physical definition of new homological invariants H a (M 3 ) of 3-manifolds (possibly, with knots) labeled by abelian flat connections. The physical system in question involves a 6d fivebrane theory on M 3 times a 2-disk, D 2 , whose Hilbert space of BPS states plays the role of a basic building block in categorification of various partition functions of 3d N = 2 theory T[M 3 ]: D 2 × S 1 half-index, S 2 × S 1 superconformal index, and S 2 × S 1 topologically twisted index. The first partition function is labeled by a choice of boundary condition and provides a refinement of Chern–Simons (WRT) invariant. A linear combination of them in the unrefined limit gives the analytically continued WRT invariant of M 3 . The last two can be factorized into the product of half-indices. Here, we show how this works explicitly for many examples, including Lens spaces, circle fibrations over Riemann surfaces, and plumbed 3-manifolds.

3-Manifolds and VOA Characters

Abstract By studying the properties ofq-series$$\widehat{Z}$$ Z ^ -invariants, we develop a dictionary between 3-manifolds and vertex algebras. In particular, we generalize previously known entries in this dictionary to Lie groups of higher rank, to 3-manifolds with toral boundaries, and to BPS partition functions with line operators. This provides a new physical realization of logarithmic vertex algebras in the framework of the 3d-3d correspondence and opens new avenues for their future study. For example, we illustrate how invoking a knot-quiver correspondence for$$\widehat{Z}$$ Z ^ -invariants leads to many infinite families of new fermionic formulae for VOA characters.

Spectral Bounds on Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds: Associativity and the Trace Formula

We constrain the low-energy spectra of Laplace operators on closed hyperbolic manifolds and orbifolds in three dimensions, including the standard Laplace--Beltrami operator on functions and the Laplacian on powers of the cotangent bundle. Our approach employs linear programming techniques to derive rigorous bounds by leveraging two types of spectral identities. The first type, inspired by the conformal bootstrap, arises from the consistency of the spectral decomposition of the product of Laplace eigensections, and involves the Laplacian spectra as well as integrals of triple products of eigensections. We formulate these conditions in the language of representation theory of PSL 2 (C) and use them to prove upper bounds on the first and second Laplacian eigenvalues. The second type of spectral identities follows from the Selberg trace formula. We use them to find upper bounds on the spectral gap of the Laplace--Beltrami operator on hyperbolic 3-orbifolds, as well as on the systole length of hyperbolic 3-manifolds, as a function of the volume. Further, we prove that the spectral gap λ 1 of the Laplace--Beltrami operator on all closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds satisfies λ 1 < 47.32. Along the way, we use the trace formula to estimate the low-energy spectra of a large set of example orbifolds and compare them with our general bounds, finding that the bounds are nearly sharp in several cases.

3d-3d correspondence for mapping tori

One of the main challenges in 3d-3d correspondence is that no existent approach offers a complete description of 3d N = 2 SCFT T [ M 3 ] — or, rather, a “collection of SCFTs” as we refer to it in the paper — for all types of 3-manifolds that include, for example, a 3-torus, Brieskorn spheres, and hyperbolic surgeries on knots. The goal of this paper is to overcome this challenge by a more systematic study of 3d-3d correspondence that, first of all, does not rely heavily on any geometric structure on M 3 and, secondly, is not limited to a particular supersymmetric partition function of T [ M 3 ]. In particular, we propose to describe such “collection of SCFTs” in terms of 3d N = 2 gauge theories with “non-linear matter” fields valued in complex group manifolds. As a result, we are able to recover familiar 3-manifold invariants, such as Turaev torsion and WRT invariants, from twisted indices and half-indices of T [ M 3 ], and propose new tools to compute more recent q -series invariants Z * ( M 3 ) in the case of manifolds with b 1 > 0. Although we use genus-1 mapping tori as our “case study,” many results and techniques readily apply to more general 3-manifolds, as we illustrate throughout the paper.

Non-Semisimple TQFT's and BPS q -Series

We propose and in some cases prove a precise relation between 3-manifold invariants associated with quantum groups at roots of unity and at generic q. Both types of invariants are labeled by extra data which plays an important role in the proposed relation. Bridging the two sides - which until recently were developed independently, using very different methods - opens many new avenues. In one direction, it allows to study (and perhaps even to formulate) q-series invariants labeled by spin c structures in terms of non-semisimple invariants. In the opposite direction, it offers new insights and perspectives on various elements of non-semisimple TQFT's, bringing the latter into one unifying framework with other invariants of knots and 3-manifolds that recently found realization in quantum field theory and in string theory.

Precision microstate counting for the entropy of wrapped M5-branes

We study the large N expansion of twisted partition functions of 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories arising from N M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3- manifold, M 3 . Via the 3d-3d correspondence, the partition functions of these 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories are related to simple topological invariants on the 3-manifold. The partition functions can be expressed using only classical and one-loop perturbative invariants of PSL(N, C) Chern-Simons theory around irreducible flat connections on M 3 . Using mathematical results on the asymptotics of the invariants, we compute the twisted partition functions in the large N limit including perturbative corrections to all orders in 1/N . Surprisingly, the perturbative expansion terminates at finite order. The leading part of the partition function is of order N 3 and agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the dual black holes. The subleading part, in particular the log N -terms in the field theory partition function is found to precisely match the one-loop quantum corrections in the dual eleven dimensional supergravity. The field theory results of other terms in 1/N provide a stringent prediction for higher order corrections in the holographic dual, which is M-theory.

Orientation reversal and the Chern-Simons natural boundary

We show that the fundamental property of preservation of relations, underlying resurgent analysis, provides a new perspective on crossing a natural boundary, an important general problem in theoretical and mathematical physics. This reveals a deeper rigidity aspect of resurgence in a quantum field theory path integral. The physical context here is the non-perturbative completion of complex Chern-Simons theory that associates to a 3-manifold a collection of q-series invariants labeled by Spinc structures, for which crossing the natural boundary corresponds to orientation reversal of the 3-manifold. Our new resurgent perspective leads to a practical numerical algorithm that generates q-series which are dual to unary q-series composed of false theta functions. Until recently, these duals were only known in a limited number of cases, essentially based on Ramanujan’s mock theta functions, and the common belief was that the duals might not even exist in the general case. Resurgence analysis identifies as primary objects Mordell integrals: up to changes of variables, they are Laplace transforms of resurgent functions. Their unique Borel summed transseries decomposition on either side of the Stokes line is simply the unique decomposition into real and imaginary parts. In turn, the latter are combinations of unary q-series in terms of q and its modular counterpart $\overset{\sim }{q}$ , and are resurgent by construction. The Mordell integral is analytic across the natural boundary of the q and $\overset{\sim }{q}$ series, and uniqueness of a similar decomposition which preserves algebraic relations on the other side of the boundary defines the unique boundary crossing of the q series. We demonstrate that this continuation can be efficiently implemented numerically. In the cases where unique mock modular identities are known, they are found by this numerical procedure, but the procedure can go well beyond the known list of identities. A particularly interesting feature of the resurgent approach is that it reveals new aspects, and is very different from other known approaches based on indefinite theta series, Appell-Lerch sums, and representation theory of logarithmic vertex operator algebras.

Rotating black hole entropy from M5-branes

We compute the superconformal index of 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories obtained from N M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3-manifold. Exploiting the 3d-3d correspondence, we use perturbative invariants of SL(N, C) Chern-Simons theory to determine the superconformal index in the large N limit, including corrections logarithmic in N. The leading order partition function provides a microscopic foundation for the entropy function of the dual rotating asymptotically AdS 4 black holes. We also verify that the supergravity one-loop contribution to the log N term coincides with the field theoretic result. We propose a 3d-3d formulation for the refined topologically twisted index, and provide strong evidence in support of its vanishing — which agrees with the fact that the expected dual rotating magnetically-charged black hole does not exist. This provides an interesting link between gravity and a tantalizing mathematical result.

q-nonabelianization for line defects

We consider the q-nonabelianization map, which maps links L in a 3-manifold M to combinations of links $\tilde{L}$ in a branched N -fold cover $\tilde{M}$. In quantum field theory terms, q-nonabelianization is the UV-IR map relating two different sorts of defect: in the UV we have the six-dimensional (2, 0) superconformal field theory of type gl(N ) on M × R 2,1 , and we consider surface defects placed on L × {x 4 = x 5 = 0}; in the IR we have the (2, 0) theory of type gl (1) on $\tilde{M}$ × R 2,1 , and put the defects on $\tilde{L}$ × {x 4 = x 5 = 0}. In the case M = R 3 , q-nonabelianization computes the Jones polynomial of a link, or its analogue associated to the group U(N ). In the case M = C × R, when the projection of L to C is a simple non-contractible loop, q-nonabelianization computes the protected spin character for framed BPS states in 4d N = 2 theories of class S. In the case N = 2 and M = C × R, we give a concrete construction of the q-nonabelianization map. The construction uses the data of the WKB foliations associated to a holomorphic covering $\tilde{C}$ →C.

Rozansky-Witten geometry of Coulomb branches and logarithmic knot invariants

By studying Rozansky-Witten theory with non-compact target spaces we find new connections with knot invariants whose physical interpretation was not known. Furthermore, this opens up several new avenues, which include a new formulation of q-series invariants of 3-manifolds in terms of affine Grassmannians and a generalization of Akutsu-Deguchi-Ohtsuki knot invariants.

Branches, quivers, and ideals for knot complements

We generalize the F K invariant, i.e. Z^ for the complement of a knot K in the 3-sphere, the knots-quivers correspondence, and A-polynomials of knots, and find several interconnections between them. We associate an F K invariant to any branch of the A-polynomial of K and we work out explicit expressions for several simple knots. We show that these F K invariants can be written in the form of a quiver generating series, in analogy with the knots-quivers correspondence. We discuss various methods to obtain such quiver representations, among others using R-matrices. We generalize the quantum a-deformed A-polynomial to an ideal that contains the recursion relation in the group rank, i.e. in the parameter a, and describe its classical limit in terms of the Coulomb branch of a 3d-5d theory. We also provide t-deformed versions. Furthermore, we study how the quiver formulation for closed 3-manifolds obtained by surgery leads to the superpotential of 3d N = 2 theory T[M 3 ] and to the data of the associated modular tensor category MTC[M 3 ].

Raman studies of hydrogen trapped in As 4 O 6 ·2H 2 at high pressure and low temperature

In this work, Raman spectroscopic measurements of the arsenolite–hydrogen inclusion compound As 4 O 6 ·2H 2 were performed in diamond anvil cells at high pressure and variable temperature down to 80 K. The experimental results were complemented by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and phonon calculations. Observation of three hydrogen vibrons in As 4 O 6 ·2H 2 is reported in the entire temperature and pressure range studied (up to 24 GPa). While the experiments performed with protium and deuterium at variable temperatures allowed for the assignment of two vibrons as Q 1 (1) and Q 1 (0) transitions of ortho and para spin isomers of hydrogen trapped in the inclusion compound, the origin of the third vibron could not be unequivocally established. Low-temperature spectra revealed that the lowest-frequency vibron is actually composed of two overlapping bands of A g and T 2g symmetries dominated by H 2 stretching modes as predicted by our previous density functional theory calculations. We observed low-frequency modes of As 4 O 6 ·2H 2 vibrations dominated by H 2 “librations,” which were missed in a previous study. A low-temperature fine structure was observed for the J = 0 → 2 and J = 1 → 3 manifolds of hydrogen trapped in As 4 O 6 ·2H 2 , indicating the lifting of degeneracy due to an anisotropic environment. A non-spherical distribution was captured by molecular dynamics simulations, which revealed that the trajectory of H 2 molecules is skewed along the crystallographic $\langle$111$\rangle$ direction. Last but not least, low-temperature synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction measurements on As 4 O 6 ·2H 2 revealed that the bulk structure of the compound is preserved down to 5 K at 1.6 GPa.

Solving 3d gravity with Virasoro TQFT

We propose a precise reformulation of 3d quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant in terms of a topological quantum field theory based on the quantization of the Teichmüller space of Riemann surfaces that we refer to as “Virasoro TQFT”. This TQFT is similar, but importantly not equivalent, to SL(2, \mathbb{R} ℝ ) Chern-Simons theory. This sharpens the folklore that 3d gravity is related to SL(2, \mathbb{R} ℝ ) Chern-Simons theory into a precise correspondence, and resolves some well-known issues with this lore at the quantum level. Our proposal is computationally very useful and provides a powerful tool for the further study of 3d gravity. In particular, we explain how together with standard TQFT surgery techniques this leads to a fully algorithmic procedure for the computation of the gravity partition function on a fixed topology exactly in the central charge. Mathematically, the relation leads to many nontrivial conjectures for hyperbolic 3-manifolds, Virasoro conformal blocks and crossing kernels.

3d gravity from Virasoro TQFT: Holography, wormholes and knots

We further develop the description of three-dimensional quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant in terms of Virasoro TQFT formulated in our previous paper [SciPost Phys. 15, 151 (2023)]. We compare the partition functions computed in the Virasoro TQFT formalism to the semiclassical evaluation of Euclidean gravity partition functions. This matching is highly non-trivial, but can be checked directly in some examples. We then showcase the formalism in action, by computing the gravity partition functions of many relevant topologies. For holographic applications, we focus on the partition functions of Euclidean multi-boundary wormholes with three-punctured spheres as boundaries. This precisely quantifies the higher moments of the structure constants in the proposed ensemble boundary dual and subjects the proposal to thorough checks. Finally, we investigate in detail the example of the figure eight knot complement as a hyperbolic 3-manifold. We show that the Virasoro TQFT partition function is identical to the partition function computed in Teichmüller theory, thus giving strong evidence for the equivalence of these TQFTs. We also show how to produce a large class of manifolds via Dehn surgery on the figure eight knot.
