Stratus and Stratocumulus Cloud Microphysics and Drizzle Relationships With CCN Modality

High resolution extended-range cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) spectral comparisons with cloud microphysics and drizzle of the Physics of Stratocumulus Tops (POST) field experiment confirmed results in the Marine Stratus/Stratocumulus Experiment (MASE). Both of these stratus cloud projects demonstrated that bimodal CCN spectra typically caused by cloud processing were associated with clouds that exhibited higher concentrations of smaller droplets with narrower distributions and less drizzle than clouds associated with unimodal CCN spectra. Resulting brighter clouds and increased cloudiness could enhance both indirect aerosol effects (IAE). These stratus findings are opposite of analogous measurements in two cumulus cloud projects, which showed bimodal CCN associated with fewer larger droplets more broadly distributed and with more drizzle than clouds associated with unimodal CCN. Resulting reduced cumulus brightness and cloudiness could reduce both IAE. Physics of Stratocumulus Tops (POST) flights in air masses with higher CCN concentrations, N CCN , showed more extremes of the stratus characteristics. However, POST flights with lower N CCN showed opposite droplet characteristics similar to the cumulus clouds, yet still showed less drizzle in clouds associated with bimodal CCN, but not as much less as the flights with higher N CCN . Since all MASE clouds were in polluted air masses, while the two cumulus projects were in clean air masses we deduce from these four projects that both the dynamic stratus/cumulus differences (vertical wind) and N CCN are responsible for the microphysics and drizzle differences among these projects. This is because the clean POST characteristics are a hybrid between MASE/POST high N CCN and the two cumulus projects.

Development of the technological process for the IGR reactor's highly-enriched irradiated uranium-graphite fuel immobilization

The immobilization of irradiated highly enriched uranium (HEU) fuel is a critical component of nuclear waste management and non-proliferation efforts. In Kazakhstan, at National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan special attention is given to managing legacy HEU fuel from research reactors. One such case involves the IGR research reactor, whose first core containing irradiated HEU uranium-graphite fuel was operated from 1961 to 1966 and removed following reactor modernization. This fuel now requires a reliable and secure immobilization strategy. Here, this paper presents the development of a technological process for immobilizing this fuel to reduce its enrichment to below 20 % in terms of 235U content. The proposed method involves down-blending irradiated HEU fuel with depleted uranium, followed by encapsulation in a Portland cement matrix. Full-scale experiments were conducted to assess the uniformity of uranium distribution within the matrix. The results confirm the effectiveness of this approach, ensuring reliable immobilization of fuel in accordance with international requirements, including IAEA standards and Kazakhstan's regulatory framework. These findings contribute to the broader effort of adapting immobilization strategies for the safe management of spent fuel from research reactors.

Atomic-scale vacancy engineering unlocks basal-plane catalytic activity in metallic WSe 2 for reversible oxygen electrocatalysis

Two-dimensional metallic transition metal dichalcogenides offer high electrical conductivity and large surface areas for electrocatalysis, yet their inherent basal planes are catalytically inert. Here, we present an atomic-scale vacancy engineering strategy to activate the basal surfaces of metallic WSe 2 for reversible oxygen electrocatalysis. This approach, based on intentionally designed substitutional metal doping, promotes the spontaneous formation of selenium vacancies while preserving the metallic 1 T′ phase, thereby creating highly reactive and oxygen-affinitive sites. Density functional theory calculations reveal that these vacancy-mediated metal complexes dramatically lower the energy barriers for initial oxygen adsorption, enabling dissociative oxygen adsorption. Operando and ex-situ spectroscopic analyses confirm that vacancy-mediated metal complexes transform into dynamic Se/W-oxide intermediates under operating conditions. Se/W-oxides on the surface experimentally and theoretically prove electrocatalytic activity and reversibility. Applying this strategy in lithium–oxygen batteries, the basal-plane activated WSe 2 shows high discharge capacities (9868 mA h g −1 , corresponding to 3947 mA h g$^{-1}_{cathode}$), impressive cycle retention over 550 cycles at 1000 mA h g −1 , and outstanding rate–capability over a wide current–density range (100–3000 mA g −1 ) during 256 cycles.

Status of the Down-Blending of Irradiated IGR Graphite Fuel in Kazakhstan

Dry processing remains the primary solution for managing the down-blending of irradiated IGR HEU fuel. Several tasks have been initiated and completed to achieve this, including lab modernization, lab-scale and full-scale testing, designing and fabricating an in-paddle mixing drum, and commissioning both a down-blending system and a crushing and milling system. Additionally, a testing and training center was modernized, the equipment was successfully commissioned, and the IGR HEU fuel blocks were repackaged into daily containers. The training of operators and the construction of a new down-blending facility are tasks that will need to be completed in the near future. The progress in these areas continues to validate that the proposed method for down-blending irradiated HEU graphite fuel, followed by cementation of the down-blended material for permanent disposition, appears to be achievable.
