An Empirical Method for Determining the Lunar Gravity Field

A method has been devised to determine the spherical harmonic coefficients of the lunar gravity field. This method consists of a two-step data reduction and estimation process. In the first step, a weighted least-squares empirical orbit determination scheme is applied to Doppler tracking data from lunar orbits to estimate long-period Kepler elements and rates. Each of the Kepler elements is represented by an independent function of time. The long-period perturbing effects of the earth, sun, and solar radiation are explicitly modeled in this scheme. Kepler element variations estimated by this empirical processor are ascribed to the non-central lunar gravitation features. Doppler data are reduced in this manner for as many orbits as are available. In the second step, the Kepler element rates are used as input to a second least-squares processor that estimates lunar gravity coefficients using the long-period Lagrange perturbation equations.

A workload model and measures for computer performance evaluation

A generalized workload definition is presented which constructs measurable workloads of unit size from workload elements, called elementary processes. An elementary process makes almost exclusive use of one of the processors, CPU, I/O processor, etc., and is measured by the cost of its execution. Various kinds of user programs can be simulated by quantitative composition of elementary processes into a type. The character of the type is defined by the weights of its elementary processes and its structure by the amount and sequence of transitions between its elementary processes. A set of types is batched to a mix. Mixes of identical cost are considered as equivalent amounts of workload. These formalized descriptions of workloads allow investigators to compare the results of different studies quantitatively. Since workloads of different composition are assigned a unit of cost, these descriptions enable determination of cost effectiveness of different workloads on a machine. Subsequently performance parameters such as throughput rate, gain factor, internal and external delay factors are defined and used to demonstrate the effects of various workload attributes on the performance of a selected large scale computer system.

A simple executive for a fault-tolerant, real-time multiprocessor.

Description of a simple executive for operation with a fault-tolerant multiprocessor that is oriented toward application in an environment where the primary function is to provide real-time control. The primary executive function is to accept requests for jobs placed by other jobs or from peripheral equipment and then schedule their initiation in accordance with the request parameters. The executive is also brought into action when a processor fails, so that appropriate disposition may be made of the job that was running on the failed processor. Many architectural features intended to support this executive concept are included.

Mars gravity derived from long-period motion of Mariner 9

The spherical harmonic coefficients in the gravity field of Mars are determined using a two stage filtering process. In the first stage, a weighted least squares orbit determination processor is applied to Mariner 9 Doppler tracking data to estimate Kepler elements and rates. In the second stage, the Kepler element rates are used as input to another weighted least squares processor that estimates gravity coefficients using the Lagrange perturbation equations. The novelty in this method is the fitting of element rates rather than the elements themselves. This procedure decouples the results from the effects of internal spacecraft dynamics.

Echo movement and evolution from real-time processing.

Preliminary experimental data on the effectiveness of conventional radars in measuring the movement and evolution of meteorological echoes when the radar is connected to a programmable real-time processor are examined. In the processor programming is accomplished by conceiving abstract machines which constitute the actual programs used in the methods employed. An analysis of these methods, such as the center of gravity method, the contour-displacement method, the method of slope, the cross-section method, the contour crosscorrelation method, the method of echo evolution at each point, and three-dimensional measurements, shows that the motions deduced from them may differ notably (since each method determines different quantities) but the plurality of measurement may give additional information on the characteristics of the precipitation.

The use of a simulator in a synthetic aperture radar data processing tradeoff study.

A computer simulation of a synthetic aperture radar system is described. The objective in developing the simulator was to make it possible to assess the imaging performance of various configurations against a variety of target types. The simulation involves targets, the radar system itself, and the processor; several analysis and output options are provided. Targets may be internally generated or come from external sources, or externally produced (e.g., real) radar signals can be used. A number of parameters of the radar system can be varied. The characteristics of the processor can be adjusted to a considerable extent. Statistical analyses may be performed. Several output options are available, including imagery.

Lunar gravity derived from long-period satellite motion - A proposed method.

The application of standardized control and interface circuits to three dc to dc power converters.

Standardized control and interface circuits were applied to the three most commonly used dc to dc converters: the buck-boost converter, the series-switching buck regulator, and the pulse-modulated parallel inverter. The two-loop ASDTIC regulation control concept was implemented by using a common analog control signal processor and a novel digital control signal processor. This resulted in control circuit standardization and superior static and dynamic performance of the three dc-to-dc converters. Power components stress control, through active peak current limiting and recovery of switching losses, was applied to enhance reliability and converter efficiency.

Apparatus and method for processing Korotkov sounds

A Korotkov sound processor, used in a noninvasive automatic blood measuring system where the brachial artery is occluded by an inflatable cuff, is disclosed. The Korotkoff sound associated with the systolic event is determined when the ratio of the absolute value of a voltage signal, representing Korotkov sounds in the range of 18 to 26 Hz to a maximum absolute peak value of the unfiltered signals, first equals or exceeds a value of 0.45. Korotkov sound associated with the diastolic event is determined when a ratio of the voltage signal of the Korotkov sounds in the range of 40 to 60 Hz to the absolute peak value of such signals within a single measurement cycle first falls below a value of 0.17. The processor signals the occurrence of the systolic and diastolic events and these signals can be used to control a recorder to record pressure values for these events.

Conical scan impact study. Volume 1: General central data processing facility

The impact of a conical scan versus a linear scan multispectral scanner (MSS) instrument was studied in terms of: (1) design modifications required in framing and continuous image recording devices; and (2) changes in configurations of an all-digital precision image processor. A baseline system was defined to provide the framework for comparison, and included pertinent spacecraft parameters, a conical MSS, a linear MSS, an image recording system, and an all-digital precision processor. Lateral offset pointing of the sensors over a range of plus or minus 20 deg was considered. The study addressed the conical scan impact on geometric, radiometric, and aperture correction of MSS data in terms of hardware and software considerations, system complexity, quality of corrections, throughput, and cost of implementation. It was concluded that: (1) if the MSS data are to be only film recorded, then there is only a nomial concial scan impact on the ground data processing system; and (2) if digital data are to be provided to users on computer compatible tapes in rectilinear format, then there is a significant conical scan impact on the ground data processing system.

Radar satellite altimetry and ocean wave height estimation

The design of a radar satellite altimeter having a plus or minus 10 cm topographic resolution at 20 meter (peak-to-trough) ocean wave heights is described. In addition to altimetry, the resulting design also provides a measurement of significant wave height over the range of 1.0 to 20 meters to within plus or minus 10%. A full deramp pulse compression technique followed by an analog filter bank to separate individual range returns is used in the radar transmitter/receiver design to reduce the A/D converter bandwidth from a rather impractical 330 MHz to less than 1 MHz. The altimeter design utilizes an onboard maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) processor to achieve the plus or minus 10 cm topographic resolution. It is shown that an MLE processor provides simultaneous optimum (minimum variance) estimates of satellite altitude, ocean wave height and electromagnetic ocean surface reflectivity.

Mars gravity derived from the long-period motion of Mariner 9

The spherical harmonic coefficients in the Mars gravity field are determined using a two-stage filtering process. In the first stage, a weighted least-squares orbit determination processor is applied to Mariner 9 radio data to estimate the mean Kepler elements of each orbit. A finite difference method is then used to generate orbital element rates. In the second stage, the gravity coefficients are determined using another weighted least-squares processor which fits the long period Lagrange perturbation equations to the estimated rates. The resulting gravity potential and associated equipotential surface is presented and error sources discussed. Gravity field results are applied to various physical properties of Mars, such as moments of inertia.-

New theoretical models and ratio imaging techniques associated with the NASA earth resources spectral information system

Four independent investigations are reported; in general these are concerned with improving and utilizing the correlation between the physical properties of natural materials as evidenced in laboratory spectra and spectral data collected by multispectral scanners. In one investigation, two theoretical models were devised that permit the calculation of spectral emittance spectra for rock and mineral surfaces of various particle sizes. The simpler of the two models can be used to qualitatively predict the effect of texture on the spectral emittance of rocks and minerals; it is also potentially useful as an aid in predicting the identification of natural atmospheric aerosol constituents. The second investigation determined, via an infrared ratio imaging technique, the best pair of infrared filters for silicate rock-type discrimination. In a third investigation, laboratory spectra of natural materials were compressed into 11-digit ratio codes for use in feature selection, in searches for false alarm candidates, and eventually for use as training sets in completely automatic data processors. In the fourth investigation, general outlines of a ratio preprocessor and an automatic recognition map processor are developed for on-board data processing in the space shuttle era.

Model of human dynamic orientation

The dynamics associated with the perception of orientation were modelled for near-threshold and suprathreshold vestibular stimuli. A model of the information available at the peripheral sensors which was consistent with available neurophysiologic data was developed and served as the basis for the models of the perceptual responses. The central processor was assumed to utilize the information from the peripheral sensors in an optimal (minimum mean square error) manner to produce the perceptual estimates of dynamic orientation. This assumption, coupled with the models of sensory information, determined the form of the model for the central processor. The problem of integrating information from the semi-circular canals and the otoliths to predict the perceptual response to motions which stimulated both organs was studied. A model was developed which was shown to be useful in predicting the perceptual response to multi-sensory stimuli.

Real-time computer data system for the 40- by 80-foot wind tunnel facility at Ames Research Center

The background material and operational concepts of a computer-based system for an operating wind tunnel are described. An on-line real-time computer system was installed in a wind tunnel facility to gather static and dynamic data. The computer system monitored aerodynamic forces and moments of periodic and quasi-periodic functions, and displayed and plotted computed results in real time. The total system is comprised of several off-the-shelf, interconnected subsystems that are linked to a large data processing center. The system includes a central processor unit with 32,000 24-bit words of core memory, a number of standard peripherals, and several special processors; namely, a dynamic analysis subsystem, a 256-channel PCM-data subsystem and ground station, a 60-channel high-speed data acquisition subsystem, a communication link, and static force and pressure subsystems. The role of the test engineer as a vital link in the system is also described.
