Demonstration of multi-active region p-down green LEDs with high quantum efficiency

Abstract Longer wavelength emitters such as green LEDs display a pronounced efficiency drop at higher current densities, resulting in relatively low wall-plug efficiency (WPE). Multi-active region approach can improve the WPE significantly and tackle the “green gap” challenge. This work reports multi-active region p-down LEDs with high external efficiency operating entirely in the green wavelength. Devices were developed using p-down topology, where the PN junction is oriented such that electric fields from depletion and built-in polarization dipoles are aligned. Ga-polar multi-active region green LEDs with excellent voltage and external quantum efficiency scaling, and significantly higher WPE is demonstrated in this work.

Soil mechanics surface sampler - Lunar surface test and results

After the success of Surveyor I in meeting the objectives of the engineering flight series, selection from among candidate experiments led to the inclusion of the Soil Mechanics Surface Sampler (SMSS) on the payload. Though originally planned for later Surveyors, the SMSS design was modified to fit the reduced telemetry and commanding capability of the earlier spacecraft. These modifications included removal of the strain-, acceleration-, and position-measuring systems originally planned, and incorporation of a means for measuring current drawn by the motors during operation. A description of the modified device, its performance on Surveyor III, and some conclusions regarding the lunar surface material drawn from the experiment are presented.

Holography utilizing surface plasmon resonances

A holographic recording medium with a substrate which has a diffraction grating composed of a number of spaced line ridges on the surface is discussed. The first layer consists of a metal with a plasma wavelength shorter than that of the selected light source. A second layer, or coating, on top of the first layer consists of a thin film of photosensitive emulsion. A diagram of the device is provided. The principles of operation are explained.

Locking mechanism for orthopedic braces

A locking mechanism for orthopedic braces is described which automatically prevents or permits the relative pivotable movement between a lower brace member and an upper brace member. The upper and lower brace members are provided with drilled bores within which a slidable pin is disposed, and depending upon the inclination of the brace members with respect to a vertical plane, the slidable pin will be interposed between both brace members. The secondary or auxiliary latching device includes a spring biased, manually operable lever bar arrangement which is manually unlatched and automatically latched under the influence of the spring.

Cyclic and low temperature effects on microcircuits

Cyclic temperature and low temperature operating life tests, and pre-/post-life device evaluations were used to determine the degrading effects of thermal environments on microcircuit reliability. Low power transistor-transistor-logic gates and linear devices were included in each test group. Device metallization systems included aluminum metallization/aluminum wire, aluminum metallization/gold wire, and gold metallization/gold wire. Fewer than 2% electrical failures were observed during the cyclic and low temperature life tests and the post-life evaluations revealed approximately 2% bond pull failures. Reconstruction of aluminum die metallization was observed in all devices and the severity of the reconstruction appeared to be directly related to the magnitude of the temperature excursion. All types of bonds except the gold/gold bonds were weakened by exposure to repeated cyclic temperature stress.

Variation of fan tone steadiness for several inflow conditions

An amplitude probability density function analysis technique for quantifying the degree of fan noise tone steadiness has been applied to data from a fan tested under a variety of inflow conditions. The test conditions included typical static operation, inflow control by a honeycomb/screen device and forward velocity in a wind tunnel simulating flight. The ratio of mean square sinusoidal-to-random signal content in the fundamental and second harmonic tones was found to vary by more than an order-of-magnitude. Some implications of these results concerning the nature of fan noise generation mechanisms are discussed.
