Co-Design of Free-Space Metasurface Optical Neuromorphic Classifiers for High Performance

Classification of features in a scene typically requires conversion of the incoming photonic field into the electronic domain. Recently, an alternative approach has emerged whereby passive structured materials can perform classification tasks by directly using free-space propagation and diffraction of light. In this manuscript, we present a theoretical and computational study of such systems and establish the basic features that govern their performance. We show that system architecture, material structure, and input light field are intertwined and need to be co-designed to maximize classification accuracy. Our simulations show that a single layer metasurface can achieve classification accuracy better than conventional linear classifiers, with an order of magnitude fewer diffractive features than previously reported. For a wavelength λ, single layer metasurfaces of size 100λ × 100λ with an aperture density λ –2 achieve ~96% testing accuracy on the MNIST data set, for an optimized distance ~100λ to the output plane. This is enabled by an intrinsic nonlinearity in photodetection, despite the use of linear optical metamaterials. Furthermore, we find that once the system is optimized, the number of diffractive features is the main determinant of classification performance. The slow asymptotic scaling with the number of apertures suggests a reason why such systems may benefit from multiple layer designs. Finally, we show a trade-off between the number of apertures and fabrication noise.

Guest Editorial for Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation (NDT&E) Special Section

Nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) are interdisciplinary fields that require a significant amount of interconnection between fundamental physics, measurement techniques, data processing, decision making, and reporting to have a significant impact on industry. NDT&E practitioners are challenged to keep up with the fast-paced evolution of materials, structures, processing, and manufacturing technologies. The development of engineered materials, complex structures and composites, and novel forming techniques require NDT&E to rapidly evolve to meet the needs of industry.

Enabling Dark Energy Measurements from DESI and LSST (Final Technical Report)

This grant enabled efforts to lead the Survey Validation of the Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) sample for DESI, entailing intensive work to prepare target samples, test their performance with DESI data, and validate that the requirements of the survey for this key sample are met. Luminous Red Galaxies represent the gold standard target class for Baryon Acoustic Observation experiments to study Dark Energy. It also funded work to co-leading the Follow-up Task Force within the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (LSST DESC), which is intended to help develop collaborations with external groups and to produce cross-working group proposals for telescope time, policy proposals and white papers as needed in order to help the collaboration obtain and make use of complementary data which will strengthen LSST Dark Energy constraints. The PI has been particularly engaged in efforts to obtain access to spectroscopic training sets for LSST photometric redshifts in the first years of the survey, which requires developing relationships with groups that are obtaining such data for other purposes. This group has evolved into an External Synergies working group within DESC, also co-led by the PI. These groups have developed white papers for Astro2020, letters of intent and white papers for Snowmass2021, and a response to a DOE-NASA RFI. It also has enabled smaller contributions to improving LSST DESC pipeline infrastructure for photometric redshifts.

Horizontal Split Table Conceptual Design for Validation of Nuclear Data used in Advanced Reactors [Slides]

A methodology to create conceptual designs of benchmark critical experiments for advanced reactors nuclear data testing and validation was developed. A first concept was explored, pebble-bed high-temperature gas cooled reactor, based on the HTR-10 reactor. The very high correlation is a proof of concept that the design is similar to the application, and performing such critical experiments would help nuclear data testing and validation. This proof-of-concept was included in the IER-539 CED-1:Preliminary Design of a New Horizontal Split Table report. Other concepts could be explored if needed, such as Molten-salt reactor, Sodium-cooled fast reactor or Heat pipe reactors/Microreactor.

Integrating Atmospheric Specifications into Seismoacoustic Event Localization

This report investigates the integration of infrasound and seismic data to improve event localization accuracy, specifically focusing on a surface explosion at the Utah Training and Testing Range (UTTR). Utilizing the Seismoacoustic Bayesian Event Locator (SABEL) framework, we incorporated atmospheric specifications derived from Ground to Space (G2S) profiles to enhance celerity-range priors. Our analysis revealed that while the combination of infrasound and seismic observations significantly reduced localization uncertainty, challenges remained, particularly with returns at distances less than 200 km from the source and the influence of specific observations on location estimates. The results indicate that broader celerity distributions, such as those from Blom et al. (2020), facilitate better alignment with ground truth locations compared to narrower models. Overall, this work demonstrates the promise of seismoacoustic approaches in refining event localization and highlights the need for further exploration of celerity-range models to ensure reliable outcomes.

Comparison of environmental conditions in the Bering Sea and Davis Strait and the effects on microwave signature returns; March and April, 1979

Aircraft data collected in the Bering Sea in March, 1979 using a 6.6 GH sub z (C Band) microwave radiometer and a 13.9 GH sub z (Ku Band) scatterometer, reinforce the difficulties in interpreting first year ice types found near the ice edge in a marginal ice zone. An ice interpretation scheme using data taken with a 13.3 GH sub z (Ku Band) scatterometer and a 19.4 GH sub z (K Band) radiometer in Davis Strait also shows ambiguity in the first year ice signal and indicates that ice interpretation becomes more difficult near the ice edge and under warmer conditions. This report also compares X Band SAR data taken in Davis Strait with similar imagery collected in the Bering Sea. Ice core samples from the Bering test area offer a basis for speculation on changes in ice morphology which affect the signature return at the ice edge, and help explain the difficulty of the sensors in discerning the two different ice types found on the photography and in the core samples.

Applications of hot-film anemometers in hypersonic shear layers

A wind tunnel test was conducted on a flat plate at zero angle of attack with a rearward facing 2D cooling film injector nozzle. The freestream Mach number was 8 and the injector Mach number was 3. The freestream Reynolds number varied from 0.43 to 3.3 million per ft during the test, and the injector flow rate was such that the jet exit and freestream static pressures were matched. The analysis reported herein will focus on data obtained at a freestream Reynolds number of 0.85 million per ft. The data consists of heat-transfer measurements obtained upstream and downstream of the injector nozzle and flowfield surveys obtained downstream of the injector nozzle with a pitot, total temperature, hot-film anemometer and hot-wire anemometer probes. The flowfield surveys were made at stations 0.1 to 9 in. downstream of the injector nozzle from near the model surface to approximately 2 in above the model surface. The hot-film anemometer was used to define the fluctuations in the shear layer separating the flows. The hot-film results are integrated with conventional measurement techniques to obtain a more complete description of the complicated shear layer separating hypersonic and supersonic flows.
