Pseudospin-doublet bands and Gallagher Moszkowski doublet bands in 100 Y

New transitions in neutron-rich 100 Y have been identified in a 9 Be + 238 U experiment with mass and Z gates to provide full fragment identification. These transitions and high spin levels of 100 Y have been investigated by analyzing the high statistics γ–γ–γ and γ–γ–γ–γ coincidence data from the spontaneous fission of 252 Cf at the Gammasphere detector array. Two new bands, 14 new levels, and 23 new transitions have been identified. The K π = 4 + new band decaying to a 1s isomeric state is assigned to be the high-K Gallagher-Moszkowski (GM) partner of the known K π = 1 + band, with the π5/2[522]Ⓧν3/2[411] configuration. This 4 + band is also proposed to be the pseudospin partner of the new K π = 5 + band with a 5 + π5/2[422] Ⓧ ν5/2[413] configuration, to form a π5/2[422] Ⓧ ν[3125/2,3/2] neutron pseudospin doublet. Here, constrained triaxial covariant density-functional theory and quantal particle rotor model calculations have been applied to interpret the band structure and available electromagnetic transition probabilities and are found to be in good agreement with experimental values.

Analysis of the bonding in tetrahedrane and phosphorus-substituted tetrahedranes

The bonding structures of tetrahedrane, phosphatetrahedrane, diphosphatetrahedrane and triphosphatetrahedrane are studied by employing an intrinsic quasi-atomic orbital analysis. Ethane, cyclopropane and tetrahedral P 4 are employed as reference systems. The orbital analysis is paired with the computation of strain energies via isodesmic reactions. The results show that the increase in geometric strain upon transition from ethane to cyclopropane to tetrahedrane weakens the CC bonds, despite leading to shorter C–C interatomic distances. With the increase in strain, the orbitals centered on C and involved in the bonding of the cage structure are observed to have elevated p-character, and the orbital structure of C deviates from sp 3 hybridization. The systematic substitution of CH groups by P atoms in the cage structure of tetrahedrane leads to stronger CC bonds, larger angles in the cage structures of the resulting phosphatetrahedranes, lower p-character in the orbitals involved in the bonding of the cages, and lower strain energies. It is found that P is more amenable to strained molecular arrangements than is C, and that the propensity of a given atom to hybridize s and p functions, or the lack thereof, has implications in the stability of molecules with strained geometries. The combination of the calculations presented here with the existing literature provides insight into the apparent propensity of tetrahedrane and P 4 to ‘break’ their tetrahedral structures. Trends in the bonding interactions, such as bond strengths, s- and p-orbital characters and charge transfer are identified and related to the strain energy observed in each of the analyzed systems.

Coalition for Community-Supported Affordable Geothermal Energy Systems (C2SAGES)

The C2SAGES project evaluated the feasibility of a community geothermal system for the planned Windy Ridge affordable housing development in Hinesburg, Vermont. Led by GTI Energy with Vermont Gas Systems, LN Consulting, NREL, and Frontier Energy, the work assessed technical design, energy performance, costs, business models, community engagement, maintenance, workforce development, and permitting. The proposed system was designed to serve 100% of the development’s heating, cooling, and domestic hot water loads. Compared with a baseline using air-source heat pumps and natural gas water heating, the geothermal system was estimated to reduce HVAC and domestic hot water energy use by about 45% to 48%, lower operating and maintenance costs, and reduce 30-year life-cycle costs by 37% for Phase 1 and 10% for Phase 2. Technical testing and modeling indicated that the Windy Ridge site is suitable for a community-scale geothermal system. The project also developed borehole field layouts, piping concepts, pump house designs, controls, maintenance plans, and supporting engineering drawings. The business model analysis found that first cost, ownership structure, and customer affordability remain major deployment challenges. Utility-led maintenance and operation were viewed favorably, but traditional utility cost-recovery models may require subsidy or revised financing structures to be practical for affordable housing. Community engagement highlighted the need for clear public education, transparent financing, reliable long-term maintenance, trained technicians, and the potential to pair geothermal systems with weatherization. Overall, the report concludes that community geothermal is technically feasible and offers meaningful energy, emissions, and life-cycle cost benefits, but broader deployment will depend on workable financing models and workforce readiness.

Grain size and structure distortion characterization of α-MgAgSb thermoelectric material by powder diffraction

Nanostructuring, structure distortion and/or disorder are the main manipulation techniques to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity and improve the figure of merit of thermoelectric materials. A single-phase α-MgAgSb sample, MgAg 0.97 Sb 0.99 , with high thermoelectric performance in near room temperature region was synthesized through a high-energy ball milling with a hot-pressing method. In this work, we report the average grain size of 24-28 nm and the accurate structure distortion, which are characterized by high-resolution neutron diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement data analysis. Both the small grain size and the structure distortion have a contribution to the low lattice thermal conductivity in MgAg 0.97 Sb 0.99 .

Probabilistic Assessment of Structural Integrity

A probability-based approach, combining deterministic and probabilistic methods, was developed for analyzing building and component failures, which are especially crucial for complex structures like nuclear power plants. This method links finite element and probabilistic software to assess structural integrity under static and dynamic loads. This study uses NEPTUNE software, which is validated, for a deterministic transient analysis and ProFES software for probabilistic models. In a case study, deterministic analyses with varied random variables were transferred to ProFES for probabilistic analyses of piping failure and wall damage. A Monte Carlo Simulation, First-Order Reliability Method, and combined methods were employed for probabilistic analyses under severe transient loading, focusing on a postulated accident at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. The study considered uncertainties in material properties, component geometry, and loads. The results showed the Monte Carlo Simulation method to be conservative for high failure probabilities but less so for low probabilities. The Response Surface/Monte Carlo Simulation method explored the impact load–failure probability relationship. Given the uncertainties in material properties and loads in complex structures, a deterministic analysis alone is insufficient. Probabilistic analysis is imperative for extreme loading events and credible structural safety evaluations.

Effective field theory factorization for diffraction

We derive a factorization formula for coherent and incoherent ep diffraction using the soft collinear effective theory, utilizing multiple power expansion parameters to handle different kinematic regions. This goes beyond the known hard-collinear diffractive factorization to address the small-x Regge dynamics and Pomeron exchange from first principles. The effective field theory analysis also uncovers and factorizes an important irreducible incoherent background generated by color-nonsinglet exchange, dubbed “quasi-diffraction”, for which we calculate the associated Sudakov suppression. For unpolarized scattering we show that there are four diffractive structure functions at leading power, and point out the importance of studying ${F}_{3,4}^D$ through asymmetries, in addition to ${F}_{2,L}^D$. For the quasi-diffractive background, we make model independent predictions for ratios of the corresponding structure functions in a perturbative kinematic region. Our analysis also makes predictions for six leading-power spin-dependent structure functions. Finally, we provide connections to diffractive parton distributions, and assess the Ingelman-Schlein model. Our work lays a path for further QCD-based studies of diffraction.

Investigating phase transitions from local crystallographic analysis based on statistical learning of atomic environments in 2D MoS 2 -ReS 2

Traditionally, phase transitions are explored using a combination of macroscopic functional characterization and scattering techniques, providing insight into the average properties and symmetries of the lattice but local atomic level mechanisms during phase transitions generally remain unknown. Here, we explore the mechanisms of a phase transition between the trigonal prismatic and distorted octahedral phases of layered chalcogenides in the 2D MoS 2 - ReS 2 system from the observations of local degrees of freedom, namely atomic positions by Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM). We employ local crystallographic analysis based on statistical learning of atomic environments to build a picture of the transition from the atomic level up and determine local and global variables controlling the local symmetry breaking. In particular, we argue that the dependence of the average symmetry breaking distortion amplitude on global and local concentration can be used to separate local chemical as well as global electronic effects on transition. This approach allows exploring atomic mechanisms beyond the traditional macroscopic descriptions, utilizing the imaging of compositional fluctuations in solids to explore phase transitions over a range of realized and observed local stoichiometries and atomic configurations.

Rotated-Droop Control for Enhanced Stability and Power Decoupling in Microgrids With Complex Line Impedances

Classical droop control in microgrids predominantly assumes inductive line impedance, which simplifies implementation but causes power coupling and steady-state errors in systems with resistive and inductive lines. This paper proposes a rotated-droop control strategy for grid-forming inverters that reformulates the power equations by incorporating the magnitude and angle of the line impedance within a rotated reference frame. This method enhances the decoupling of active and reactive power dynamics without increasing complexity or requiring communication links. A small-signal state-space model was created to capture the dynamic behavior of the system under varying impedance parameters, preserving the original droop gains by rotating the power control structure. This allows eigenvalue-based stability analysis and enhances damping and transient performance. Simulation and experimental results validated the improved power-sharing performance, faster response, and robustness of the proposed method under different impedance conditions. This approach maintains the decentralized structure of the conventional droop control while enabling greater adaptability and scalability, making it suitable for modern inverter-based microgrids with dynamic topologies.

Mechanistic Studies of Ligand Substitution, Linkage Isomerism, and Insertion Reactions in Electron Rich Pd(II) Complexes of a Zwitterionic Diimine Ligand

We have prepared cationic palladium complexes possessing a new zwitterionic ligand bis-N,N’–1-(2,4,6-triphenylpyridyl) oxalamide [(N ^ N)Pd(Me)(L)] + [BArF] - , (BArF=3,5-(CF 3 ) 2 C 6 H 3 , L=NCMe, CO). The structure of [(N ^ N)Pd(Me)(CO)] + [BArF] - was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Energy Decomposition Analysis (EDA) indi-cates this N ^ N zwitterionic ligand is more electron-donating relative to bidentate diimine ligands. Low temperature NMR analysis shows the existence of linkage isomers with the N ^ N isomer the most stable. Structures were assigned using NMR and DFT analysis. Barriers to interconversion of isomers are ΔG ‡ = 10-12 kcal/mol. Kinetics of acetoni-trile displacement from [(N ^ N)Pd(Me)(NCCH 3 )] + [BArF] - by CD 3 CN, ethylene and t Bu 3 P were measured and mechanisms of exchange determined. The ethylene complex, [(N ^ N)Pd(Me)(C 2 H 4 )] + was generated at -45 °C, and the barrier of migrato-ry insertion determined at 0 °C (ΔG ‡ = 23.4 kcal/mol) and compared to related diimine complexes. The methyl carbonyl complex undergoes migratory insertion in the presence of CO at -70 to -55 °C (ΔG ‡ = ca. 15.7 kcal/mol) to yield the acyl carbonyl complex. Furthermore, the neutral bis-trimethylsilylmethyl complex [(N ^ N)Pd(CH 2 SiMe 3 ) 2 was prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. It displays dynamic behavior at very low temperatures in the NMR spectrum (-90 °C, ΔG ‡ =7.9 kcal/mol) which, supported by DFT analysis, is ascribed to rotation of the bulky -CH 2 SiMe 3 groups.

Three-dimensional charge density wave in the dual heavy fermion system UPt 2 Si 2

Heavy fermion liquids offer via their Kondo lattice diverse possibilities for exotic ground states. Using variable-temperature atomic pair distribution function analysis, we study the local atomic structure of the "dual" heavy fermion liquid UPt 2 Si 2 , which exhibits antiferromagnetism consistent with localized 5f-electron states and transport properties characteristic to itinerant 5f-"spd" hybridized electron systems. We show that UPt 2 Si 2 exhibits periodic lattice distortions (PLDs) involving both uranium and platinum atoms that are characteristic to three-dimensional charge density waves. Here, the temperature evolution of the PLDs tracks that of the transport and magnetic properties, suggesting the presence of little-known 5f-electron-lattice interactions. We argue that PLDs in heavy fermion liquids in general, and in particular in UPt 2 Si 2 , appear as new degrees of freedom that entangle competing electronic states and, as such, must be accounted for when their rich physics is considered.

Application of prophage sequence analysis to investigate a disease outbreak involving Salmonella Adjame, a rare serovar and implications for the population structure

Introduction Outbreak investigation of foodborne salmonellosis is hindered when the food source is contaminated by multiple strains of Salmonella , creating difficulties matching an incriminated organism recovered from patients with the specific strain in the suspect food. An outbreak of the rare Salmonella Adjame was caused by multiple strains of the organism as revealed by single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) variation. The use of highly discriminatory prophage analysis to characterize strains of Salmonella should enable a more precise strain characterization and aid the investigation of foodborne salmonellosis. Methods We have carried out genomic analysis of S. Adjame strains recovered during the course of a recent outbreak and compared them with other strains of the organism ( n = 38 strains), using SNPs to evaluate strain differences present in the core genome, and prophage sequence typing (PST) to evaluate the accessory genome. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using both total prophage content and conserved prophages. Results The PST analysis of the S. Adjame isolates showed a high degree of strain heterogeneity. We observed small clusters made up of 2-6 isolates ( n = 27) and singletons ( n = 11) in stark contrast with the three clusters observed by SNP analysis. In total, we detected 24 prophages of which only four were highly prevalent, namely: Entero_p88 (36/38 strains), Salmon_SEN34 (35/38 strains), Burkho_phiE255 (33/38 strains) and Edward_GF (28/38 strains). Despite the marked strain diversity seen with prophage analysis, the distribution of the four most common prophages matched the clustering observed using core genome. Discussion Mutations in the core and accessory genomes of S. Adjame have shed light on the evolutionary relationships among the Adjame strains and demonstrated a convergence of the variations observed in both fractions of the genome. We conclude that core and accessory genomes analyses should be adopted in foodborne bacteria outbreak investigations to provide a more accurate strain description and facilitate reliable matching of isolates from patients and incriminated food sources. The outcomes should translate to a better understanding of the microbial population structure and an 46 improved source attribution in foodborne illnesses.

Inorganic Halide Double Perovskites with Optoelectronic Properties Modulated by Sublattice Mixing

All-inorganic halide double perovskites have emerged as a promising class of materials that are potentially more stable and less toxic than lead-containing hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite optoelectronic materials. In this work, 311 cesium chloride double perovskites (Cs 2 BB'Cl 6 ) were selected from a set of 903 compounds as likely being stable on the basis of a statistically learned tolerance factor (t) for perovskite stability. First-principles calculations on these 311 double perovskites were then performed to assess their stability and identify candidates with band gaps appropriate for optoelectronic applications. We predict that 261 of the 311 Cs 2 BB'Cl 6 compounds are likely synthesizable on the basis of a thermodynamic analysis of their decomposition to competing compounds (decomposition enthalpy <0.05 eV/atom). Of these 261 likely synthesizable compounds, 47 contain no toxic elements and have direct or nearly direct (within 100 meV) band gaps between 1 and 3 eV, as computed with hybrid density functional theory (HSE06). Within this set, we identify the triple-alkali perovskites Cs 2 [Alk] + [TM] 3+ Cl 6 , where Alk is a group 1 alkali cation and TM is a transition-metal cation, as a class of Cs 2 BB'Cl 6 double perovskites with remarkable optical properties, including large and tunable exciton binding energies as computed by the GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE) method. We attribute the unusual electronic structure of these compounds to the mixing of the Alk-Cl and TM-Cl sublattices, leading to materials with small band gaps, large exciton binding energies, and absorption spectra that are strongly influenced by the identity of the transition metal. The role of the double-perovskite structure in enabling these unique properties is probed through an analysis of the electronic structures and chemical bonding of these compounds in comparison with other transition-metal and alkali transition-metal halides.

(Mg,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni)O: A rocksalt high-entropy oxide containing divalent Mn and Fe

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have aroused growing interest due to fundamental questions relating to their structure formation, phase stability, and the interplay between configurational disorder and physical and chemical properties. Introducing Fe(ιι) and Mn(ιι) into a rocksalt HEO is considered challenging, as theoretical analysis suggests that they are unstable in this structure under ambient conditions. Here, we develop a bottom-up method for synthesizing Mn- and Fe-containing rocksalt HEO (FeO-HEO). We present a comprehensive investigation of its crystal structure and the random cation-site occupancy. We show the improved structural robustness of this FeO-HEO and verify the viability of an oxygen sublattice as a buffer layer. Compositional analysis reveals the valence and spin state of the iron species. We further report the antiferromagnetic order of this FeO-HEO below the transition temperature ~218 K and predict the conditions of phase stability of Mn- and Fe-containing HEOs. Our results provide fresh insights into the design and property tailoring of emerging classes of HEOs.

Combined full shape analysis of BOSS galaxies and eBOSS quasars using an iterative emulator

ABSTRACT Standard full-shape clustering analyses in Fourier space rely on a fixed power spectrum template, defined at the fiducial cosmology used to convert redshifts into distances, and compress the cosmological information into the Alcock–Paczynski parameters and the linear growth rate of structure. In this paper, we propose an analysis method that operates directly in the cosmology parameter space and varies the power spectrum template accordingly at each tested point. Predictions for the power spectrum multipoles from the TNS model are computed at different cosmologies in the framework of $\Lambda \rm {CDM}$. Applied to the final eBOSS QSO and LRG samples together with the low-z DR12 BOSS galaxy sample, our analysis results in a set of constraints on the cosmological parameters Ωcdm, H0, σ8, Ωb, and ns. To reduce the number of computed models, we construct an iterative process to sample the likelihood surface, where each iteration consists of a Gaussian process regression. This method is validated with mocks from N-body simulations. From the combined analysis of the (e)BOSS data, we obtain the following constraints: σ8 = 0.877 ± 0.049 and $\Omega _{\rm m}=0.304^{+0.016}_{-0.010}$ without any external prior. The eBOSS quasar sample alone shows a 3.1σ discrepancy compared to the Planck prediction.

SCOPe: improvements to the structural classification of proteins – extended database to facilitate variant interpretation and machine learning

Abstract The Structural Classification of Proteins—extended (SCOPe, https://scop.berkeley.edu) knowledgebase aims to provide an accurate, detailed, and comprehensive description of the structural and evolutionary relationships amongst the majority of proteins of known structure, along with resources for analyzing the protein structures and their sequences. Structures from the PDB are divided into domains and classified using a combination of manual curation and highly precise automated methods. In the current release of SCOPe, 2.08, we have developed search and display tools for analysis of genetic variants we mapped to structures classified in SCOPe. In order to improve the utility of SCOPe to automated methods such as deep learning classifiers that rely on multiple alignment of sequences of homologous proteins, we have introduced new machine-parseable annotations that indicate aberrant structures as well as domains that are distinguished by a smaller repeat unit. We also classified structures from 74 of the largest Pfam families not previously classified in SCOPe, and we improved our algorithm to remove N- and C-terminal cloning, expression and purification sequences from SCOPe domains. SCOPe 2.08-stable classifies 106 976 PDB entries (about 60% of PDB entries).

Evolution of global and local deformation in additively manufactured octet truss lattice structures

Additively manufactured lattice truss structures, often referred to as architected cellular materials, present significant advantages over conventional structures due to their unique characteristics such as high strength-to-weight ratios and surface area-to-volume ratios. These geometrically complex structures, however, come with concomitant challenges for qualification and inspection. In this study, compression testing interrupted with micro-computed tomography inspection was conducted to monitor the evolution of global and local deformation throughout the loading process of 304L stainless steel octet truss lattice structures. Both two- and three-dimensional image analysis techniques were leveraged to characterize geometric heterogeneities resulting from the laser powder bed fusion manufacturing process as well as track the structure throughout deformation. Variations from model-predicted behavior resulting from these heterogeneities are considered relative to the predicted and actual responses of the structures during compression to better understand, model, and predict the octet truss lattice structure compression response.
