Wind turbine acoustic standards

A program is being conducted to develop noise standards for wind turbines which minimize annoyance and which can be used to design specifications. The approach consists of presenting wind turbine noise stimuli to test subjects in a laboratory listening chamber. The responses of the subjects are recorded for a range of stimuli which encompass the designs, operating conditions, and ambient noise levels of current and future installations. Results to date have established the threshold of detectability for a range of impulsive stimuli of the type associated with blade/tower wake interactions. The status of the ongoing psychoacoustic tests, the subjective data, and the approach to the development of acoustic criteria/standards are described.

Optimal tooth numbers for compact standard spur gear sets

The design of a standard gear mesh is treated with the objective of minimizing the gear size for a given ratio, pinion torque, and allowable tooth strength. Scoring, pitting fatigue, bending fatigue, and the kinematic limits of contact ratio and interference are considered. A design space is defined in terms of the number of teeth on the pinion and the diametral pitch. This space is then combined with the objective function of minimum center distance to obtain an optimal design region. This region defines the number of pinion teeth for the most compact design. The number is a function of the gear ratio only. A design example illustrating this procedure is also given.

Analysis and design of a standardized control module for switching regulators

Three basic switching regulators: buck, boost, and buck/boost, employing a multiloop standardized control module (SCM) were characterized by a common small signal block diagram. Employing the unified model, regulator performances such as stability, audiosusceptibility, output impedance, and step load transient are analyzed and key performance indexes are expressed in simple analytical forms. More importantly, the performance characteristics of all three regulators are shown to enjoy common properties due to the unique SCM control scheme which nullifies the positive zero and provides adaptive compensation to the moving poles of the boost and buck/boost converters. This allows a simple unified design procedure to be devised for selecting the key SCM control parameters for an arbitrarily given power stage configuration and parameter values, such that all regulator performance specifications can be met and optimized concurrently in a single design attempt.

Efficient Distribution of Frequency-Standard Signals

Low power system distributes precise frequency standard signal to network of remote stations. Reference frequency at phase angle modulates transmitter at master transmitter/receiver circuit and recovers at remote circuit. Two circuits continuously transmit on microwave or optical signals 100 MHz apart to effect synchronization of reference frequency and phase.

Hydrogen Masers as Time and Frequency Standards

Track each other with 100 times more precision than cesium standards. Geographically separated hydrogen masers tracked each other for more than year to within few parts in 10 to the 15th power. Frequency offset of hydrogen-maser output from hyperfine line frequency is function of ambient magnetic field, cavity mistuning, thermal motion of atoms in cavity and collisions of atoms with walls of the cavity. If maser remains at one location some of small offsets in frequency will remain constant throughout life of maser.

The optimal design of standard gearsets

A design procedure for sizing standard involute spur gearsets is presented. The procedure is applied to find the optimal design for two examples - an external gear mesh with a ratio of 5:1 and an internal gear mesh with a ratio of 5:1. In the procedure, the gear mesh is designed to minimize the center distance for a given gear ratio, pressure angle, pinion torque, and allowable tooth strengths. From the methodology presented, a design space may be formulated for either external gear contact or for internal contact. The design space includes kinematics considerations of involute interference, tip fouling, and contact ratio. Also included are design constraints based on bending fatigue in the pinion fillet and Hertzian contact pressure in the full load region and at the gear tip where scoring is possible. This design space is two dimensional, giving the gear mesh center distance as a function of diametral pitch and the number of pinion teeth. The constraint equations were identified for kinematic interference, fillet bending fatigue, pitting fatigue, and scoring pressure, which define the optimal design space for a given gear design. The locus of equal size optimum designs was identified as the straight line through the origin which has the least slope in the design region.

On the local standard of rest

Under the influence of a spiral gravitational field, there should be differences among the mean motions of different types of objects with different dispersion velocities in a sipral galaxy. The old stars with high dispersion velocity should have essentially no mean motion normal to the galactic rotation. On the other hand, young objects and interstellar gas may be moving relative to the old stars at a velocity of a few kilometer per second in both the radial (galacto-centric), and circular directions, depending on the spiral model adopted. Such a velocity is usually referred as the systematic motion or the streaming motion. The conventionally adopted local standard of rest is indeed co-moving with the young objects of the solar vicinity. Therefore, it has a net systematic motion with respect to the circular motion of an equilibrium galactic model, defined by the old stars.

Influence of modulation frequency in rubidium cell frequency standards

The error signal which is used to control the frequency of the quartz crystal oscillator of a passive rubidium cell frequency standard is considered. The value of the slope of this signal, for an interrogation frequency close to the atomic transition frequency is calculated and measured for various phase (or frequency) modulation waveforms, and for several values of the modulation frequency. A theoretical analysis is made using a model which applies to a system in which the optical pumping rate, the relaxation rates and the RF field are homogeneous. Results are given for sine-wave phase modulation, square-wave frequency modulation and square-wave phase modulation. The influence of the modulation frequency on the slope of the error signal is specified. It is shown that the modulation frequency can be chosen as large as twice the non-saturated full-width at half-maximum without a drastic loss of the sensitivity to an offset of the interrogation frequency from center line, provided that the power saturation factor and the amplitude of modulation are properly adjusted.

A new calibration method for time delay standard and its application

A method which is used to measure time delay accurately by using a Type 900-LB slotted line is described. The accuracy for calibrating time delay of a precision coaxial air line Type 900-L is about + or - (0.4 to 0.6)ps, and for coaxial cables with VSWR less than 1.5 and time delay t less than 50ns is about + or - (3 to 5)ps. Theoretical analysis and mathematical derivation of microwave networks in cascade are given. Methods to eliminate the errors which are caused by the discontinuities and the error analysis of the measuring system are presented. Skin effect analysis of the transient characteristic of coaxial transmission line are discussed in detail. Methods to eliminate the errors which result from using the calibrated time delay standard to calibrate time interval measurement instruments are presented. The estimation of errors and formulae for correction of those errors are described.

Standardization of computer compatible tape formats for remote sensing data

Standards and guidelines being developed for future CCT formats for use in Landsat receiving stations are presented, in order to solve the data compatability problem, and to consider user community requirements. Data exchange at the local, regional, national, or international level is an important user requirement, and data integration from various sources should be possible. The tape super structure allows various formats to be implemented. A volume directory identifies the volume, and a file descriptor confirms it. The data is then filed, and it is determined whether the data files are appropriate to already defined file classes. If not, a new class is established. Applications of this format are in three areas: satellite imagery, geocoded polygon data, and airborne remote sensing data.

Comparison of CARS combustion temperatures with standard techniques

This paper describes a comparative study of temperatures measured with Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) and those using standard measurement techniques. CARS temperatures from nitrogen vibrational-rotational spectra have been obtained in a premixed hydrogen-air laboratory flame supported on a flat flame burner over a temperature range from about 1000 K to 2100 K. The techniques used for comparison were sodium line reversal, thin wire thermocouples and heat balance calculations. These studies show a good agreement over the entire temperature range studied.
