Haiti Agriculture II: Evaluating the Success of Reforestation Practices in Haiti

The Caribbean country of Haiti has an extensive history of deforestation and environmental degradation stemming from French colonization. Over the past 33 years, the Haiti Reforestation Partnership (HRP) and their partners, Comprehensive Development Program (CODEP), have planted approximately 15.52 million trees. However, these efforts lacked scientific guidance to ensure successful forest stand survival. The NASA DEVELOP team partnered with the HRP to create a habitat suitability model (HSM) by using PlanetScope and Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) imagery. The team also incorporated Landsat 8 and 9 OLI surface temperature, Centre National de L’Information Geo-Spatiale (CNIGS) Airborne Lidar, and ancillary datasets to analyze areas suitable for future reforestation efforts. The habitat model suggested locations with higher forest stand survival based on topography, soil health, climate, and feasibility to access suggested locations. We confirmed the HSM through a cross-analyzation of high enhanced vegetation index (EVI) values. Areas with lower EVI values and higher suitability based on the HSM were suggested for future planting as they lack well-established forest stands but have optimal conditions for growth. Through the creation of the HSM, the team provided the HRP with static maps of high suitability, a 3D printed elevation model, and a guidebook for animators. Additionally, the team provided a structured video highlighting the HRP’s efforts. Effective reforestation and better forest stand survival would help to achieve the goal of securing community food security. This would also serve as a guide to expand planting efforts into other locations and communities.

NESC GN&C TDT Best Practices: Design Requirements for Satisfactory Handling Qualities of a Piloted Spacecraft

This document describes work to determine a proposed set of concise design requirements for manned spacecraft to yield satisfactory handling qualities when the pilot is performing manual control. This is done primary via the analysis of various historic spacecraft. Partial requirements verification is performed via the creation of a simulated pilot used to determine limits of satisfactory vehicle performance. Partial requirements validation is per-formed via example conceptual design of a spacecraft that is compliant with all relevant proposed requirements.

Identifying and Documenting Expert Knowledge, A Practical Study of Design Patterns

Globalization, powered by digitization, is increasing technology growth and knowledge transfer rates to levels not seen in the previous 3500 years, obscuring absolute truth and accelerating rates of innovation and production. Competing,or remaining competitive, in this global marketplace requires a learning organization adopt a method of capture, retention, and reuse for demonstrated tacit knowledge to accelerate the development of increasingly complex systems of high quality at a reasonable cost. The architectural theory of Patterns and Pattern Language is a validated methodology for mining tacit domain knowledge from a proven system. This work applies architectural theory to a multi-year development experiment and captures exposed knowledgeas a design patternin a model based systems engineering tool, demonstrating applicability ofdigital engineering initiativesin thedescription and reuse of expert design knowledge.By creating and archiving model based expressions of expert knowledge,a learning organization canimprovepractical decision making and avoid uninformed concept phase decision making

Multiple-Effector Control Allocation: Theory and Practice

Redundant controls are ubiquitous in many aerospace domains, including aircraft, spacecraft, and launch vehicles. Multiple control effectors having different capabilities (e.g., reaction controls, aerosurfaces, and vectored engines) must be optimally allocated to achieve high-performance and robust vehicle control, while considering different constraints, cost, or performance metrics associated with various control mixing schemes. These can include force or deflection limits, rate limits, propellant usage or drag penalties, cross-axis coupling, uncertainties, or even servoelastic interactions. This presentation introduces the fundamentals of control allocation theory, based on linear algebra and convex sets, using a handful of examples taken from the air and space vehicle domains. It is shown that even simple methods can provide verifiable and quantifiable performance benefits over ad-hoc approaches, and can support enhanced functions like fault tolerance and control reconfiguration.

Shoshone River Water Resources: Assessing Sediment Inputs into the Shoshone River in Wyoming to Determine Areas for Protection and Restoration Practices

In 2016, a routine repair operation at the Willwood Dam released tons of built-up sediment into the Shoshone River, polluting the river and negatively impacting the ecosystem. This release greatly affected the communities that rely on the river for farming, recreation, and tourism. In partnership with the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WYDEQ), Shoshone River Partners, and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Wyoming–Montana Water Science Center, this project utilized satellite imagery and precipitation data to examine turbidity patterns in the Shoshone River between the Buffalo Bill Dam and the Willwood Dam. We used PlanetScope satellite images to assess changes in surface reflectance of the river in response to precipitation events and Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Integrated Multi-Spectral Retrieval (IMERG) precipitation data to estimate the lag time between rainfall events and increased turbidity. The National Land Cover Dataset (2019) was used to identify the main land cover types within each sub-basin. The end products included a turbidity analysis, land cover analysis, and precipitation analysis that provided the partners with a better understanding of sediment dynamics in the river. The results demonstrated the feasibility of using PlanetScope data to examine turbidity spatially along small rivers. Sediment plumes from tributaries were visually identified for multiple high turbidity events, and we calibrated an equation that translated reflectance to turbidity, accurately representing plume extent. Inconsistent spectral quality of PlanetScope data, however, limited our ability to assess the relative sediment contribution of the tributaries.
