Transition Metals Separation with Commercial Neutral Extractants – A Review

The increasing use of extraction chromatography resins across fields such as hydrometallurgy, nuclear medicine, and environmental analysis has created a need for a deeper understanding of their interactions with transition metals. Despite extensive research on f-element separations, the behavior of transition metals in these systems remains relatively understudied. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on the extraction behavior of transition metals with neutral extractants, including TODGA, TEHDGA, TBP, and CMPO, and their corresponding resins, such as DGA, BDGA, UTEVA, TBP, and TRU. The review summarizes extraction data, extracted complex coordination environments, separation reaction stoichiometries, and associated thermodynamics, highlighting inconsistencies and knowledge gaps in the literature. The study emphasizes the need for further research using spectroscopy and computational methods to elucidate extraction mechanisms and to improve the efficiency and selectivity of transition metal separations. By identifying areas for future research and development, this review aims to stimulate advancements in the field and promote the development of innovative separation technologies. The implications of this research are far-reaching, with potential applications in nuclear waste management, nuclear forensics, metal recovery, and environmental remediation. Overall, this review provides a foundation for future studies on the extraction of transition metals using neutral extractants and resins.

Heavy Duty Commercial Vehicle Platooning Energy Benefits for Conventional and Electrified Powertrains

Heavy duty vehicle platooning under highway operating conditions, has been projected to provide significant fuel economy gains based on aerodynamic drag improvements of the platooning vehicles. Realizing these benefits under real-world operating conditions presents several challenges. This paper (the first as part of series) provides a framework to quantify the fuel economy benefits of both conventional and electrified powertrains operating across the U.S. Interstate highway system. In addition to the powertrain, key interactions that are explored include the vehicle separation distance, baseline vehicle aerodynamic properties, vehicle weight, number of vehicles in the platoon, excursions from road speed limits, and particular traffic interactions. While the approach makes use of a limited fidelity vehicle model for longitudinal dynamics, the narrative provides application decision personnel with a mechanism and well-defined set of fuel economy impact factors to consider as part of their architecture selection process.

Data-Driven Approach to Transactive Energy Systems with Commercial Buildings

A microgrid with solar, storage, and responsive load resources has been implemented and tested on an urban academic campus. Through modeling and simulation, a consensus transactive energy mechanism has been implemented, with each resource participating as a virtual battery. Most owners of large buildings don't have the information and expertise to develop and validate suitable models of their buildings using available tools. To mitigate this adoption barrier, a data-driven building model has been implemented and validated. It uses 5-minute weather data, 3-second revenue meter data, energy audit information, and a load reduction test conducted by the building owner.

Total-Ionizing-Dose Effects on Long-term Data Retention Characteristics of Commercial 3-D NAND Memories

This article evaluates the data retention characteristics of irradiated multi-level cell (MLC) 3-D NAND flash memories. We irradiate the memory chips by a Co-60 gamma-ray source for up to 50 krad(Si) and then write a random data pattern on the irradiated chip to find its retention characteristics. The experimental results show that the data retention property of the irradiated chips is significantly degraded compared to the un-irradiated ones. We evaluate two independent strategies to improve the data retention characteristics of the irradiated chips. Furthermore, the first method involves high-temperature annealing of the irradiated chip while the second method suggests pre-programming the memory modules before deploying them in radiation-prone environments.

Dynamic Testing of a Commercial FRAM Device Under Gamma Ray Dose and Neutron Beam

Here, this work presents dose rate and neutron testing on a ferroelectric random-access memory (FRAM) device in dynamic operation during radiation pulses. Radiation failure modes are shown to be unique. Dose rate failure is shown to be based primarily on integrated dose in the radiation pulse and terminates the FRAM operation and can alter up to 8 bytes of data in storage. Neutron failures are attributed to a shifting of data like a clocking error.

Atomic precision imaging with an on-chip scanning tunneling microscope integrated into a commercial ultrahigh vacuum STM system

In this article, we replace the Z axis of the piezotube of a conventional Ultrahigh-Vacuum (UHV) Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) with a one-degree-of-freedom Microelectromechanical-System (MEMS) nanopositioner. As a result, a hybrid system is realized in which motions in the XY plane are carried out by the piezotube, while the MEMS device performs the Z-axis positioning with a smaller footprint and higher sensitivity. With the proposed system and a feedback loop, STM imaging is conducted on an H-passivated Si (100)-2×1 sample in a UHV condition, demonstrating that this on-chip STM is conducive to atomic precision scanning tunneling microscopy.

Data-Driven Co-optimization of Energy Efficiency and Indoor Environmental Quality in Commercial Buildings

In this paper, we use publicly available data of a highly instrumented building to estimate how zonal temperature and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration are related to some key operational and environmental measurements. Subsequently, we have developed, simulated, and evaluated an optimization framework for minimizing the energy consumption of the central heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit while meeting zonal temperature and indoor air quality (IAQ) standards. Finally, we have evaluated the achievable energy savings for our proposed approach as compared to a baseline approach and reported significant savings potential.
